Sarah Chavez, an instructor in English Composition and Literature at Ball State University, will lead a writing workshop on Saturday November 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. The workshop will be held in the Founders Room at Gallery 308, which is located at 308 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.
Participants must enroll no later than November 3. To sign up, contact Gallery 308 by phone at 289-8575 or by email at gallery308@gmail.com. The size of the workshop is limited so would-be participants are encouraged to enroll early.
The cost of the workshop is $10. Payment is due by November 8. Checks should be made payable to Gallery 308.
Chavez teaches composition at Ball State and has an interest in contemporary and confessional poetry, feminism, and gender studies. Among other things, she has been an assistant poetry editor for a Chicano literary publication, and has presented her work at creative writing workshops around the Midwest.
She believes that every writer must learn to listen and think critically and be able to express themselves in a creative way. "The steps with which I view the writing process are: Reading, Expression, Critical Thinking (Brainstorming), Writing, and Revising."
Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. The Gallery opens a new exhibit every First Thursday. Contributions to Gallery 308 are tax-deductible. Muncie Civic Theatre Masquerade Gala at Vera Mae's
Join the Muncie Civic Theatre for a Masquerade Gala on November 1st after the Jekyll and Hyde performance. The Masquerade Gala will take place at Vera Mae's at 10:00 pm after the end of the performance.

This exhibit features a 69-foot replica of a snake's skeleton that utilizes videos, artifacts, text panels and interactive elements to teach visitors about snakes of the Midwestern United States.

Gallery 308 Annual Wine Dinner & Art Auction with Advance Preview
Gallery 308 will host its 6th Annual Wine Dinner and Art Auction on Friday, November 21, at Vera Mae's Bistro. Something new has been added to this year's event: An advance preview of the items to be auctioned will be offered, beginning on First Thursday, November 6, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
In addition to the art that will be up for auction, the Gallery will once again sell bottles of wine exclusively bottled for the occasion by Grape Expectations in Carmel. The bottles are decorated with a unique one-of-a-kind "collectible" label designed by well-known local artist Jim Faulkner.
Proceeds from the art auction and sale of wine will again be divided between Gallery 308 and A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Fund). Event organizers hope to exceed the $6,000 that was raised at the event in 2007.
To give potential bidders a chance to preview the items to be auctioned, all art will be on display at the Gallery from the opening reception on November 6 through auction night, November 21. Admission to the reception is free and the public is invited. The Gallery is located at 308 East Main, Muncie.

News from the Downtown Farm Stand
The second annual All Beers Considered will be Sunday October 26th from 2-5 pm outdoors at the Fickle Peach at 117 E Charles St in downtown Muncie. This event will feature local beers paired with local farmstead cheeses from The Downtown Farm Stand. We're excited for this Octoberfest like event in the outdoors on a Sunday afternoon. This will be a great oppurtunity to taste all of the different cheeses from The Swiss Connection farm from Clay County Indiana. Last years event was a huge success, so reserve your spot today and tell them you heard about it from Dave Ring and The Downtown Farm Stand.

New Egg Supplier
We're proud to have a new quality egg supplier at The Downtown Farm Stand starting next week on October 24th. Sara, the kids and I visited the farm of Jonathon and Lucinda Gingerich near Kokomo, Indiana this last Sunday. Homestead Heritage is a beautiful farm with the poultry and cows all raised on grass and pasture. Their neighbor raises and grinds their feed for them all naturally (quality feed is very hard to find in Indiana). We look forward to them suppling us with plenty of eggs this year. Local quality pastured eggs have been in short supply, and I've been working steadily to find a good producer. We've finally found one and we're happy to have them aboard. Look for them on October 24th.

Muncie Ballet Workshops Offered
Muncie Ballet will offer two six week workshops in dance and theatre for children in preparation for The Children's Nutcracker.
Each workshop will have a style all its own... and is open to children k-6th grade.
Mischievous Elf Tuesdays 4-5pm October 28th - Dec. 6th
Jumping, turning, crouching,and creating a sprightly elf is the goal....Theatre movement class directed by Arttacgo Luckett - participants will have great fun creating movements using several different styles of dance. The final creation will be used in The Children's Nutcracker. Dance or stage experience is not required.
Sugar Plum Fairy Saturdays 9:30-10:30 Nov. 1 - Dec. 6th
Tip toes, turning, twirling and creating the sweetest fairy is the goal... Theatre movement class directed by Lisa Love - participants will create a sparkle and shine fairy character dance to be used in The Children's Nutcracker. Dance or stage experience is not required.

Dance Workshop with Professional Choreographer Caroline Lewis
Professional dancer and choreographer Caroline Lewis is coming to Muncie! Caroline has worked with professional groups and names such as 'NSync, Britney Spears, The Latin Billboard Awards, the Disney Corporation, and has worked with Mia Micheals', judge and choreographer of the show So You Think You Can Dance. Middletown Idol Winners Announced
Cornerstone Center for the Arts would like to thank the sponsors for this year's Middletown Idol competition. The competition was fierce. There were 20 contestants competing to win the title of Middletown Idol 2008 in the Vocal Division and the New Dance Division. The Event was hosted by Ms. Lisa Love and judged by Mr. Arttacgo Luckett, Jr.; Ms. Angelia Gordon; Miss Elizabeth Sherrow; Ms. Michelle Jones; Ms. Joan Jones; Mrs. Yolanda Bonner; and Mrs. Beth Leavell-Davis. All proceeds from this event help us to continue our efforts to "Create Community Connections" by bringing the arts to the community.

Celebrate the harvest season with a special outdoor dinner prepared and served in the Orchard Courtyard Saturday, Nov. 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Flavors of Fall, sponsored by Lifetouch, invites guests to snuggle up under the warm tent or sit by the crackling fire while watching professional chefs from the American Culinary Federation prepare a three-course meal.

This year will be a first for a show of the donated pieces prior to the dinner/auction. The dinner is November 21, the show opening will be First Thursday November 6, all art will be on display at Gallery 308 thru November 21.
Please drop off artwork for auction at Jack's Camera or Gallery 308 beginning October 29 thru November 3. Please label work on the back in upper right hand corner. This will give us time to make labels and properly light the work. We also hope to produce a book for use at Vera Mae's prior to auction night.
Last year raised $6000.00 for ARF and Gallery 308 to split, the best fundraiser ever and we cannot thank all you artists enough for your generosity in donating your work. We hope to surpass last year's total and are counting on your generosity again this year.

Upcoming Events at Cornerstone Center for the Arts
The Cornerstone Arts Program is excited to introduce its next series of six week classes, which begin October 27th and continue until December 11th. These classes are a great option for community members to experience some of our exciting classes in a shorter setting. This series offers a small sampling of classes in dance, music, and visual arts. Most group classes start at just $40 for the entire session and all supplies are included for visual arts classes. Payment plans are available for the 6 week session.
Youth Classes (ranging from age 2- 8th Grade) include: Early Tumbling (ages 2-5), Youth Tap (1st-8th grade), Youth Belly Dance (1st-8th grade), Children's Choir (3rd-5th grade), Youth Art (1st-5th grade), and Art Exploration (6th-8th grade). Private lessons are also offered in the following areas: Drums, Guitar, Piano, Saxophone, Trumpet, Strings, Voice, and American Sign Language.
9th Grade-Adult classes include: Introductory Ballroom, Dance & Fitness, Swing, Contemporary & Lyrical, Watercolors, Drawing, and Paper Crafting & Collage. Private lessons are also offered in the following areas: Private Ballroom Dance lessons, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Saxophone, Trumpet, Strings, Voice, and American Sign Language.

Martial Arts with Peter Ellery is returning to Cornerstone and we are excited to restart the program. Martial Arts classes will meet for all levels on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 starting October 7th . Financial aid covering half the class fee will be available for those who qualify and forms are available online as well as in the building. The deadline for financial aid applications for this class is October 10th.
Community Halloween Party
Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts for a FREE family Halloween party! On Thursday, October 30th from 4:00-6:00 pm, we will have fun and family friendly activities for children, prizes, treats, and more. This event is free and open to the public, so come dressed in your costume or not, but come and enjoy all the Halloween party has to offer! We are located at 520 E Main Street in downtown Muncie.
401(k)ids Ten Year Anniversary
On October 23rd at 7:00pm Cornerstone Center for the Arts will celebrate the past ten years of the 401(k)ids Arts Scholarship Program as well as past and present participants of the program.

Harvest Moon Film Festival
The second annual Harvest Moon Film Festival will take place November 13th -15th in downtown Muncie. A variety of independent films will be screened and community members will have the chance to view films, attend the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, and attend the educational workshops.

9th Grade-Adult classes include: Introductory Ballroom, Dance & Fitness, Swing, Contemporary & Lyrical, Watercolors, Drawing, and Paper Crafting & Collage. Martial Arts with Peter Ellery is returning to Cornerstone and we are excited to restart the program. Martial Arts classes will meet for all levels on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 starting October 7th . Financial aid covering half the class fee will be available for those who qualify and forms are available online as well as in the building. The deadline for financial aid applications for this class is October 10th.
Community Halloween Party
Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts for a FREE family Halloween party! On Thursday, October 30th from 4:00-6:00 pm, we will have fun and family friendly activities for children, prizes, treats, and more. 401(k)ids Ten Year Anniversary
On October 23rd at 7:00pm Cornerstone Center for the Arts will celebrate the past ten years of the 401(k)ids Arts Scholarship Program as well as past and present participants of the program.
Participants will perform or display past work including dance, art, theatre, or music. This event is free and open to the public. Information: 281-9503, ext. 15.
Harvest Moon Film Festival
The second annual Harvest Moon Film Festival will take place November 13th -15th in downtown Muncie. A variety of independent films will be screened and community members will have the chance to view films, attend the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, and attend the educational workshops.

UPDATED: Enjoy the Sights and Sounds of ArtsWalk Tonight in Downtown Muncie
October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Happening Oct. 2, from 5-9pm, featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, performances and demonstrations, free food, music in the streets and more. ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4 - The legendary Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art returns with a new home and a new name, at Gallery 308. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be on hand for this event where the poets' work has inspired the artists' work. A public reception will open the event during ArtsWalk on October 2; and Arts Kaleidoscope Festival Day is Oct. 4, 10 to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. Free for all ages, cash luncheon will be served.

Local artists have painted a "Plate for the Cure," and the plates they painted will be in a silent auction during the week. The winning bids will be notified Sun. Through October 19 - Open Space: Art About the Land at Minnetrista, an art competition and exhibition which recognizes and encourages artists in East Central Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to help the Red-tail Conservancy.
Through October - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.
Through October - Artworks Gallery will exhibit beadmaker Lisa Atchison's "Turning Over a New Leaf," with an opening reception during ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 2. Music will be provided by harpist Megan Upchurch.

ARTSWALK Thursday, Oct. 2 - Downtown Muncie, in partnership with Ball State University, presents "ArtsWalk" from 5-9pm. Featuring gallery openings, performances and demonstrations, free hors d'oeuvres, music in the streets and more. 111 Arts Gallery and Tattoo Studios, 111 E. Main St., will participate in its first ArtsWalk today. Brad Brunsman will be the featured artist at the gallery. An opening reception with refreshments, a DJ and a performer is set for 5 p.m.

ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4 - The legendary Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art returns with a new home and a new name, at Gallery 308. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be on hand for this event where the poets' work has inspired the artists' work. October 1-4 - The fourth annual "Create for the Cure" will take place at The Artist Within. Local artists have painted a "Plate for the Cure," and the plates they painted will be in a silent auction during the week. The winning bids will be notified Sun. October 5th, and the monies will be donated to the Komen Foundation.
October 2 - October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, demonstrations, food, music in the streets and more.
October 2 - Arts Kaleidoscope art and poetry festival opening reception at Gallery 308, 5 to 9pm.

Through October 19 - Open Space: Art About the Land at Minnetrista, an art competition and exhibition which recognizes and encourages artists in East Central Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to help the Red-tail Conservancy.
Through October - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.
Through October - Artworks Gallery will exhibit beadmaker Lisa Atchison's "Turning Over a New Leaf," with an opening reception during ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 2. Music will be provided by harpist Megan Upchurch.
Through October - The Artist Within will feature artwork by two local artists through October. Thurman Grantham will showcase new sculptural pieces in "Thurman's World of Flowers." Yorktown native Brent Engelmann will display his digital photo collages. "Trippin' through the 70's" includes photos of rock legends. An opening reception will be held during ArtsWalk, Oct. 2, from 5 to 9pm.

October kicks off with a three-day celebration of the arts in Downtown Muncie Indiana. Family fun fills the streets from Thursday, October 2 through Saturday, October 4, with four festivals spotlighting the best of East Central Indiana's visual arts, poetry, music, dance, film and more.
Thursday, October 2 - ARTSWALK Downtown Muncie in partnership with Ball State University presents "ArtsWalk" from 5-9pm. Featuring gallery openings, performances and demonstrations, free hors d'oeuvres, music in the streets and more.

ARTSWALK - THURSDAY, OCT. 2
October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Happening Oct. 2, from 5-9pm, featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, performances and demonstrations, free food, music in the streets and more. Art and poetry lovers may remember the popular annual autumn ritual known as the Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art. Memories of the event are associated with its creator, the late poet Mildred Trivers, who died in 2007.
Gallery 308 is bringing back The Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art under a new name - ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE - and you don't want to miss it!
The public reception that opens the event is Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Arts Kaleidoscope Festival Day is Oct. 4, 10 to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be on hand for this event. The poets' work has inspired the artists' work. It's the marriage of the two artistic endeavors that makes Arts Kaleidoscope so unique.

Muncie Film Sowcase in Downtown Muncie This Friday
Harvest Moon Film Festival and Ball State Cardinal Filmworks will present a Muncie Film Showcase on Friday, October 3rd at 8:00PM in downtown Muncie at the Blue Bottle Coffee Shop parking lot at 206 S. Walnut Street. The Muncie Film Showcase will feature six short films from Muncie and Ball State University filmmakers and is in partnership with the ArtsWalk events of the weekend.
The Muncie Film Showcase is a great networking opportunity for those interested in film and for those wanting to get involved in film projects. An information table will be provided with details on acting in local films, working on crews, and discovering other ways to get involved in film in the Muncie area.
This event is free for all ages. There will be a cash bar available.
The six films will be presented in the following order:

An Orwellian drama about two lovers planning an escape from the unseen forces that keep them separated.

The beloved Humpback Barn Festival returns this year, courtesy of Gallery 308, and with a new name - Arts Kaleidoscope. The public reception that opens the event is Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Arts Kaleidoscope Festival Day is Oct. 4, 10 to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be featured, and there will be a memorial to the festival's creator, Mildred Trivers, who passed away in 2007. Through September - Painter Alan Patrick will showcase his oil paintings in a new exhibit entitled "Heartland" at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. September 27 thru January 9 - Earthworks at Minnetrista. Native American cultures in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia constructed geometric and animal-shaped earth works that often rivaled Stonehenge in their astronomical accuracy. See virtual reconstructions of these works from 39 sites.

Through October - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.
Through October - Artworks Gallery will exhibit beadmaker Lisa Atchison's "Turning Over a New Leaf," with an opening reception during ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 2. Music will be provided by harpist Megan Upchurch.
Through October - The Artist Within will feature artwork by two local artists through October. Thurman Grantham will showcase new sculptural pieces in "Thurman's World of Flowers." Yorktown native Brent Engelmann will display his digital photo collages. "Trippin' through the 70's" includes photos of rock legends. An opening reception will be held during ArtsWalk, Oct. 2, from 5 to 9pm.
Through October - Minnetrista Farmers Market meets every Wednesday evening from 4pm until sold out, and every Saturday morning from 8am to noon. Featuring vegetables, fruits, flowers, eggs, honey, baked goods, meat, cheese and much more.
Every Monday - Jazz at the Fickle Peach features Charlie Owen on drums, Paul Rhine on double-bass and flute, and Phil Cooley on Piano. They perform every Monday night from 9 to 11.

Humpback Festival Returns as Arts Kaleidoscope
Art and poetry lovers may remember the popular annual autumn ritual known as the Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art. Memories of the event are associated with its creator, the late poet Mildred Trivers, who died in 2007.
Gallery 308 is bringing back The Humpback Barn Festival of Poetry & Art under a new name - ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE - and you don't want to miss it!
The public reception that opens the event is Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Arts Kaleidoscope Festival Day is Oct. 4, 10 to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be on hand for this event. The poets' work has inspired the artists' work. It's the marriage of the two artistic endeavors that makes Arts Kaleidoscope so unique.
ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE is sponsored by Gallery 308 with support from The Community Foundation of Muncie & Delaware County and individual private donors. A full schedule of activities for ARTS KALEIDOSCOPE is found below; more information is available at www.gallery308.org (click on Arts Kaleidoscope).

* A memorial exhibit entitled "Remembering Mildred Trivers and the Humpback Barn";
* Humpback Barn Festival memorabilia from Mildred's estate (courtesy of Yvonne Williams, curator)
Oct. 4, Festival Day, at Cornerstone Center for the Arts (520 East Main, Muncie):
* Poetry readings and video, "Art of the Moving Image and the Spoken Word" in the Theater Room (10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m.);
* A cash-at-the-gate, catered al fresco luncheon, in the parking lot on Main Street, just east of the Gallery (noon to 2 p.m.).
All of these events are open to the public; admission to everything (except the Saturday luncheon) is free.
