Brad Ayers Photography Exhibit "Pushing Reality" at The Artist Within

The Artist Within presents the photography of Brad Ayers in an encore exhibit opening First Thursday, July 3, and continuing through July. In the exhibit "Pushing Reality", Ayers combines his lifelong love of art and photograph by using the techniques of digital photography to blur the boundaries between the two.

A former middle-school teacher, who splits his time between Muncie and Florida, Ayers has exhibited in Muncie and in juried exhibitions in Florida at the Art Center Manatee and at Selby Gardens. Growing up surrounded by the architecture of his hometown Columbus, Indiana, and the paintings of his grandmother, a Brown County artist, he developed an interest and appreciation for art. The well-traveled Ayers shoots a wide range of subjects and is drawn to the colors, patterns, and images in both natural and urban scapes. His interests extend from vibrant colors to classic black and white.

Digital photography allows him to alter images similarly to the way film photographers do in photo labs. He enjoys pushing the reality of photography into the realm of fine art by enhancing digital images, extending them further from reality into impressionism and abstraction. His goal is to inspire the viewer to appreciate and to display photography as another form of fine art and to enjoy the experience.

"Woman as Vessel" Exhibit by Kimberly Anderson at Artworks

"Woman As Vessel," a new exhibition by artist Kimberly Anderson, will be on display at Artworks through July 31st. An opening reception will be from 5 to 8pm during First Thursday July 3rd.

Kimberly Anderson was born in Evanston, IL and is now a resident of Hartford City, IN. Her mother is a therapist/social worker and her father is a college professor of science, which forged her fascination with science and the human psyche. These influences helped foster her sense of wonder which influenced artistic interests. Early in life, her parents moved to a 96 acre farm nestled in heavily wooded hills in rural Pennsylvania where she was to enjoy nature. They raised a menagerie that included horses, cows, pigs, ducks, rabbits, chickens, opossums, cats and dogs. These experiences with nature and animals are an important aspect of her personality and work.

Anderson holds three degrees focusing on ceramics and spent eight years in management. Her struggle to balance work and art left her unfulfilled. She decided to pursue her passion for art full-time. She began doing shows in 2001 and in April 2002 Milkweed Ceramics became her full-time career.

"Upon graduation I married my husband, Scott, who is also an artist". They relocated to Indiana and Scott accepted a position as assistant professor of art at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Anderson is still teaching in addition to participating in juried shows, solo exhibitions and traveling to art shows across the country to promote Milkweed Ceramics. The technical aspects of her work explore both functional and sculptural elements, using both high and low-fire materials.

Anderson states: "Human life unfolds in the fabric of time and history. My sculptures and functional ware are based on issues that surround the mysteries of existence and human origin. In my work I am addressing ideas that evoke a since of memory and human relations to and about the land. The work considers both personal and historical relationships to the environment. My sculptures and figurative vessels reference archeological excavations, feminine roles, cycles of renewal and decay, evolution vs. mythic beliefs, and relate to events in my personal history. I am exploring views and ideas that revel in life's mysteries and stir thoughts of becoming and being. I am influenced by two spheres of thought: the physical sciences and the human psyche. Science provides the facts and the psyche reveals mystery".

"My thrown and altered pottery is an ongoing investigation about woman as vessel. The fertility vessels quote Neolithic sources. I use a variety of firings to enhance interpretation. The ideas I am exploring are open ended. I am not searching for truth or exposure, but for a secret".

ARWORKS GALLERY'S MISSION: As a non-profit cooperative artist gallery, our mission is to serve the Muncie community and provide local artists a facility to exhibit their art and to provide educational opportunities and affordable art to our community.

A New Baroque Musical Monodrama Premiers at Muncie Civic Theatre

A free workshop performance of Those Killing Feares, a newly devised musical monodrama will be presented at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 E. Main Street in Muncie, IN on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 7:00pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help "Save the Civic". For more information contact Julie Lyn Barber at 765-468-6153.

The production utilizes vocal music by the Baroque era English songwriter, Henry Purcell and dramatized selections from the three volume 17th century novel, Love-Letters Between a Noble Man and His Sister, by female author, Aphra Behn. The story centers on "Cynthia," the abandoned victim of a seducer and political traitor (her brother-in-law), now in hiding. Through Purcell's music and the contents of her letters, we learn the history of her relationship, her current situation, and her lover's fate as well as her own. The presentation is being developed for future presentation at Early Music Festivals and Chamber Music SeriesÃŽ. The audience will have the opportunity to offer feedback and discuss the performance with the performers immediately following the show.

Julie Lyn Barber, soprano, performs the role of "Cynthia." She holds a Masters degree in Opera and Music Theatre and is gaining recognition as an Early Music Specialist. She recently served as stage director for the Bloomington Early Music Festival's educational opera, Inside Scarlatti's 'Tigrane.' and last year, for Early Music Muncie's inaugural production of Dido and Aeneas. In 2004, she was the recipient of an Astral Career Grant from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts to attend the prestigious Vancouver Early Music Festival's Baroque Vocal Workshop where she studied with Ellen Hargis. This year she was a finalist in the Bel Canto Regional Artist Competition where she earned praise for her pure tone and flexible upper range. Amy Riffle-Kouyeas, pianist, will accompany. Amy teaches piano at Arts Place in Portland, IN. She has a Master of Music degree in piano performance and piano pedagogy from West Virginia University. Amy also works part time at Taylor University and Ball State University as an accompanist and has served as pianist and music director for a number of theatrical productions. She is the musical director at First Presbyterian Church in Hartford City.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) was the foremost composer of his day. He was organist at Westminster and wrote much music for theatrical performances in the newly developed concert scene in Restoration London. From 1690-1695 he wrote music for more than forty plays.

Aphra Behn (1640-1689) was one of the first professional female authors in England. She had worked for King Charles II as a spy during the Second Dutch War and endured debtor's prison before becoming a successful author of poetry, plays and novels. Her poetry made her famous in her time and only John DrydenÃŽs plays were produced more often. The source material for this production comes from her three volumes, Love-Letters Between a Noble-Man and his Sister (1684)), Love Letters From a Noble Man to his Sister (1685), and The Amours of Philander and Silvia (1687).

Meet the Artists During First Thursday Downtown

Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, June 5th, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries spotlight their exhibit openings on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.

Some of the gallery events (in alphabetical order by gallery) at the next First Thursday:

The Artist Within ~ 313 S Walnut Street ~ 765-289-7895

June at the Artist Within will feature the collaborative work of Nick Carnes and Jason Bord.

The two artists began working on a series of paintings during a phase where both were unemployed with not a lot of money to spend. They started painting over old used canvases with any left over oil paint that they could find.

"We would paint at the same time but occasionally switch sides, making the painting belong to neither of us. We were painting for the sake of painting", explains Jason.

After awhile both got jobs and could afford to start painting on larger pieces. At that point they decided to try putting together a show of their collaborative automatism paintings.

Their paintings exhibit a bold use of color and express a great deal of emotion, reminiscent of the Expressionists. Jason is a Ball State graduate and is currently working several different jobs and Nick is a current Ball State student who will be teaching at Wapahani High School this fall.

The collaborative paintings will be on display from June 3-28, 2008 with an artists' reception Thursday June 5th from 5-8pm.

----------

Artworks ~ 301 South Walnut Street ~ 765-288-2221

"Earth and Fire" by Sue Beach and Carol Burt will be on exhibit through July 1, 2008 at Artworks Gallery with an opening reception at First Thursday, June 5 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Sue Beach makes functional pottery using various techniques including throwing on the potters wheel, extruding and hand building. Her wheel-thrown work is made on a kick-wheel designed and built by her husband, Ron. She develops and mixes her own glazes and is continually experimenting with new colors and techniques.

Beach says that "beautiful objects should be used everyday. It is satisfying to know that my work brings the joy and beauty of handmade pottery into the lives of others".

Beach has been working with pottery since 1998 and currently does most of her work at her studio located in rural Delaware County. She has studied with Marvin Reichle and is currently studying with well-known local potter, John Peterson.

Carol Burt is a life-long resident of Muncie and has been making art for over twenty years. Burt graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. in English and Art Education and a M.A. in painting. For the past six years she has been studying ceramics, taking classes at Ball State, with local potter John Peterson, and attending summer workshops in Tennessee.

In 2007 Burt was awarded a Lilly Endowment to research the history and science of ceramic kilns and is currently at work completing a 25 cubic foot gas reduction kiln at her home.

Burt has been teaching art for 18 years and has just completed her 13th year at Sutton Elementary where her fifth graders can participate in Pottery Club to learn the basics of throwing pots on the wheel.

The two friends met when they both decided to study with John Peterson and have become friends through the class. They have discovered a lot of common viewpoints and interests beyond their love of pottery.

ArtWorks Gallery's Mission as non-profit cooperative artist gallery is to serve the Muncie community and provide local artists a facility to exhibit their art and to provide educational opportunities and affordable to our community.

Ongoing Exhibits: Linda Norris - Morton, pottery John Peterson - pottery

Gallery 308 ~ 308 E. Main Street ~ 765-289-8575

Three members of Ball State's Department of Architecture faculty, Joseph C. Blalock, Jr., Lohren Deeg, and Brian Hollars, will present Muncie Triptych: A Vision of Hope in Three Parts, the new exhibition that will open June 5 at Gallery 308. A free public reception will be held for the First Thursday opening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Muncie Triptych picks up on a subject that has been the focus of a recent series in the StarPress. The newspaper series has spotlighted the abandoned and decaying buildings that blight the city's landscape. Many Muncie residents see a pattern emerging: Empty and decaying buildings have been allowed to remain while some historically significant buildings were destroyed. Downtown Muncie is a "shadow" of the intricate fabric of life that it once was, says Professor Blalock.

In Muncie Triptych, the three architects use a three-part model to tell the story of Muncie's past, present and future. On one "side" of the triptych is Muncie as it once was, on the second is Muncie as it currently is, and on the third is a hopeful and positive vision of what Muncie could become.

The architects hope that the exhibition will help to stimulate a positive, creative and thoughtful discussion about the unique regional qualities that are Muncie.

Blalock, Deeg and Hollars will also present the program for Gallery 308's Living Art series on Thursday, June 19, at 7 p.m. They will discuss Muncie Triptych in detail. Public policy makers, community leaders, and everyone who cares about Muncie should plan to attend the free presentation.

Muncie Triptych: A Vision of Hope in Three Parts at Gallery 308

Nick Carnes and Jason Bord Exhibit at The Artist Within in June

"Earth and Fire" Sue Beach and Carol Burt Exhibit at Artworks in June
