Meet Actor Doug Jones Tonight at the Muncie Mall

Meet the star of My Name is Jerry, Doug Jones! He'll be signing autographs and taking photos at the Muncie Mall on Thursday, July 31st from 6-8pm.

The first 50 people to arrive will receive a free signed 8x10 Abe Sapien photo! We'll also have a photographer available to take stills of visitors with Doug on a green screen, and put them both in a scene from My Name is Jerry for $5 (a portion of the proceeds benefit the Simon Youth Foundation).

This is also a great chance to learn more about the film and maybe buy a My Name is Jerry t-shirt.

My Name is Jerry follows Jerry (Pan's Labyrinth's Doug Jones), a forty-something door-to-door book salesman, who is used to having doors shut in his face. However, a chance meeting with Trisha, engaging young punk rocker, opens the door into a new world.

Members of the distinguished cast include Catherine Hicks (Annie Camden on “7th Heaven”) as Dana, Don Stark (Bob Pinciotti on “That 70’s Show) as David, and Allison Scagliotti (Mindy Crenshaw on “Drake &Josh”).

The movie is set to be released in 2009.

My Name Is Jerry is a student and industry professional collaborate effort in partnership with The Institute for Digital Entertainment and Education, The College of Fine Arts, and Ball State University.

August at the Artist Within and Gallery 308

"Friends and Family" is an exhibition of some of the artwork the Artist Within owners Bob and Vicki Hartley have collected over the years. During his years as an art teacher, Bob was frequently asked how he became interested in art. His answer was simply stated, "I grew up with it. The walls of our home were covered with art and my mother and siblings were always doing artwork of some sort. We were encouraged to explore art and were taken to galleries at an early age."

August's exhibit will feature a look at some of the artwork that the Hartleys have "grown up with". An opening reception will be held Thursday August 7th from 5-8 pm and the show will remain up through August 30th.

Young artists from Clay Camp will have their work on display at Gallery 308 the first two weeks of August. The exhibit will include work created by children in summer art camps at the Art Mart and the Artist Within. An opening reception to meet the young artists will be held Thursday August 7th from 5-8 pm.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing to Host Gallery Sale

Overstuffed closets can be a beautiful thing, especially when the stuffing is in the form of luscious oil paintings, hand-thrown pottery, crisp watercolors, and hand-pulled prints. Gallery owners, Brian and Genny Gordy, have decided to thin out the works left in their care by offering the first comprehensive art sale at their downtown shop.

Included in the exhibit/sale will be many recognizable names - Alan Patrick, Jim Faulkner, Margie Prim, David and Sarojini Johnson, Bill Zack, Shonet Martin, Eric Ernstberger, Martha Gilliom, Jerry Henning, Sally Myers, Carol Burt, the Gordy's, and others. "Artists love to sell their work. Galleries love to sell artists' work. Art patrons and collectors love to have beautiful things for their homes," offered son, Ben, a framer and burgeoning art collector. "Of course, we also love to put beautiful frames on that art whenever we can."

The Gordy gallery wall will be filled with dozens of pieces, salon-style, throughout August. As objects sell, they will be replaced with other pieces, also on sale. The public is invited to attend the First Thursday opening on August 7th, from 5 to 8 PM, where light refreshments will be served. The exhibit may also be viewed during normal business hours, Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Civic Theatre. For more information, call 284-8422, or visit www.gordyframing.com.

"My Name is Jerry" Update

Welcome to the first My Name is Jerry Newsletter! Today 9July 26) was the tenth day of filming (we're halfway!) and Don Stark was in downtown Muncie to perform his scenes as David, a salesman friend of Jerry (Doug Jones). We filmed in the Horizon Convention Center and Muncie Star Press offices. You may recognize Don as the character Bob Pinciotti from That 70's Show.

On Wednesday, Catherine Hicks of 7th Heaven fame was in Muncie to film her scenes as the character Dana Holderman at the Ball State University Alumni Center.

Filming has been going well despite the interruption of many passing trains during outdoor scenes. However, given the film's Midwestern setting, they are an undeniable part of the ambiance.

On July 31, the film's star, Doug Jones, will be making an appearance at the Muncie Mall from 6-8 PM signing autographs and taking photos. The first 50 fans to arrive will receive signed pictures of Abe Sapien, Jones' role in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Be sure to come and meet Dougie - he's a sweetheart!

For daily updates from the set, be sure to check out our blog and see the latest videos, pictures, and more!

In the News: My Name is Jerry has been featured recently on WRTV (Indianapolis Channel 6 News), The Star Press, and IPR. If you would like to help us spread the word about this exciting film, please contact Jessica Seaton, jlseaton@bsu.edu, with your suggestions!

Thurman Grantham and Carol Cheney Featured at Artworks in August

"Resonating Bio-forms" by Thurman Grantham will be on exhibit at ArtWorks through August. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday Downtown from 5 to 8pm.

Additionally, Carol Cheney will be giving portrait demonstrations at the ArtWorks Art Gallery on First Thursday, August 7, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Carol is a painter and local artist/educator. Her watercolor and oil paintings will be on display at ArtWorks Gallery for the month of August.

ArtWorks Gallery will be presenting artist demonstrations within the gallery once a month on First Thursdays. These demonstrations are free to the public.

Thurman Grantham's surrealistic flora and fauna are out of this world and truly exotic. Grantham's media of choice is auto-body plastic and layers of crystal-based paints and clear coat. He often includes insects hidden within the foliage. His first six sculptures were created over a six-year span.

Grantham is a native of Albany, Indiana and is a graduate of Delta High School. His occupation is a paint restoration specialist at Muncie Imports and Classics. The media he uses to restore rust eaten Jaquars is also used to create his sculptures. Grantham is considered by definition as an "Outsider Artist". This term is often used to define a group of artists who have not had formal art instruction. Grantham relies on his creative imagination and his innate artistic sense of design, color and composition to fabricate his creations.

Grantham is 52 and soft spoken. He states "I have been an artist all my life". Art just comes naturally to him and when he was a youngster he dabbled in watercolors. His older brother is a professional artist in Chicago. Grantham started using auto-body plastic and paints in 2002 when two of his buddies complained about not having the money to buy their wives flowers for Valentine's Day. Grantham replies: "We'll just make them". He made one for his wife as well. According to his wife of 27 years, Marilyn "You never know what he is going to come up with next"!

We also painted the cement floors in each of the rooms to complement the new carpet. Taking out the old carpet was a dusty job, but the new look is a great improvement to the building.

The new carpeting is provided by the Psi Iota Xi Charitable Endowment Fund. This organization does wonderful things for our community and they also host Candy Cane Lane which is November 22nd this year.

Thanks to all the students, teachers, resident organizations, and groups who were so flexible in moving around during renovations. We know you'll find it was worth the wait.

Corner stone Art Gallery Renovations

The renovations in the Music Room and Theatre Room are not the only exciting improvements being made here at Cornerstone. This past spring, the Cornerstone Art Gallery received a fresh coat of paint and new overhead lighting, which act as spotlights for each individual piece of artwork.

Student Voluntary Services at Ball State University teamed up with their Greek organizations to volunteer at Cornerstone. It was through the University's Greek Week activities that over twenty volunteers helped with painting the Art Gallery and other public spaces.

This event turned out to be a great success and we plan on working with the Greek organizations at Ball State again.

The renovation to the Art Gallery is made possible by the Ball State University Art Museum, The Community Foundation, and the Ball Brothers Foundation. The gallery is located on the second floor of our building with new shows opening each month.

Ceramics Studio's New Equipment

Cornerstone's ceramics students now have new and improved equipment!

Adult Ceramics and Youth Ceramics are two very popular classes here at Cornerstone. Students make their own pieces by hand building and throwing on the wheel. They are able to glaze and fire their pieces as well. The finished pieces make a beautiful display at the end of the semester Celebrations and Carnivals.

The Ceramics Studio has brand new throwing wheels, tools, a slab roller, and glazes. The large kiln oven has also been repaired. Students have loved the new choices in clay, tools, and glazes for making their art.

The new equipment and necessary repairs were funded through a generous grant from Muncie Power Products.

Corner stone Art Gallery

The Cornerstone Art Gallery is currently featuring "Artwork of a Muncie Youth", an exhibit by recent Delta High School graduate, David Freeman.

David's artwork has been recognized as "Best Overall" in the Cornerstone Art Show. This exhibit features 15 of David's most recent pieces.

Stop by the 2nd floor Art Gallery to see this fantastic display from one of Muncie's young artists. New shows will be opening on the First Thursday of every month.

Weekly Downtown E-News 7/10/08

OPINION: Unknown Hinson, the King of Country & Western Troubadours, is playing a showdate at Doc's Music Hall in Downtown Muncie on Friday July 11th. This is a can't-miss show for all guitar aficionados and fans of good schlocky psychobilly fun. I saw him at a New Year's Eve gig in Kentucky, and again last Thursday at Radio Radio in Indianapolis. While his "rackerds" are pure sappy countrypolitan circa 1972, and though he insists that "rowk & roll is straight from hay-ell," that's exactly what you'll get at his showdate concerts. Hay-ell raising rowk. Wooow! [BANG] Check out the story of Unknown Hinson here, then git down to Doc's and buy your tickets to tomorrow's show! -- carey @ munciedowntown.com

Today is the last day for the BSU orientation parent tours of Downtown Muncie. Many thanks to everyone involved at Ball State, Downtown Development and Muncie Visitor's Bureau, and extra thanks to all the downtown businesses, volunteers and tour guides who helped contribute to the success of this year's tours. In its third year, the tour program continues to be well received by the parents. Good job, everyone!

Music on the Move Returns to MCM

The Muncie Children's Museum received a Region Five grant award from Arts Place, INC., the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, to bring Music on the Move: Musical Instruments Come Alive by the Muncie Symphony Orchestra to the MCM. Music on the Move will be back at the Museum starting in January 2009 and running through April 2009.

Music on the Move will take place during the Muncie Children’s Museum's Free Saturdays, which are designed to give the community free admission to the Museum for the day. Each Music on the Move program will consist of two parts and focus on a different musical instrument each time. The first part of the day’s activities will include a small mini-concert and give children the opportunity to handle the instruments during an instrument petting zoo. The second half of the program will feature an interactive storytelling session or activity with a take-home book or craft.

In June 2009, grant monies will also bring the Muncie Children's Museum to conduct activities at the annual Symphony on the Green performances at Ball State University. The Ball Brothers Foundation is also providing support for Music on the Move.

This grant was made possible through the Indiana Regional Partnership Initiative Program, collaboration between the Indiana Arts Commission and Indiana's Regional Arts Partners.

This is the second time the Muncie Children's Museum has partnered with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra to bring Music on the Move to the Museum. In 2006 and 2007, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra brought entertainment and music to children at the Museum on five Free Saturday mornings.

For more information about Music on the Move: Musical Instruments Come Alive at the Muncie Children’s Museum, call (765) 286-1660 or visit www.munciechildrensmuseum.com.
