"Two Brothers" Exhibit at Gallery 308 in April

Local brothers Thurman and Lee Grantham are featured in the April exhibition at Gallery 308, located at 308 East Main, Muncie.

The two men are collaborating on a new exhibit entitled "Two Brothers," their first show together. This exhibit highlights their independent yet complimentary artistic styles.

Thurman, whose "autobody floral creations" have been shown in other local galleries, has also commissioned several pieces. His work has been described as being truly unique and original.

Older brother Lee works in reverse acrylics on Plexiglas. In "Two Brothers," you can see this unique technique in a portrait showing a younger version of the two brothers.

Lee and Thurman are graduates of Albany High School where Lee was 'artist of the year' for most of his high school career. Thurman also excelled in his artistic pursuits, winning several prizes as a student. Thurman is the youngest of the three Grantham brothers; the third, Roy, is not currently active with any artistic projects.

"Both our parents were artistic," says Thurman. "Our dad dabbled in drawing and our mom did arts and crafts with us. They nurtured our creativity in that way, and as a result, all 3 of us have artistic aptitude."

Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Contributions to Gallery 308 are tax-deductible. For more information about gallery hours, volunteer and donor opportunities, please call 765-289-8575.

Orphans at Muncie Civic Theatre Studio

Muncie Civic Theatre presents Orphans by Lyle Kessler in the Studio Theatre, April 3rd-5th & 9th-11th . Thursday through Saturday performances are at 8:00pm and the Sunday matinee on April 5th is at 2:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for college students.

This play is for mature audiences and no one under the age of 17 will be admitted.

Orphans is the story of two brothers who live in a house in North Philly. Although they are adults, there is something child-like about these orphans. The older one supports himself and his brother by petty thievery and doing whatever it takes to survive. Soon Harold is brought into the home, a rich man with people trying to find and kill him. Harold establishes the house as a base of operations and, in a strange, hilarious and moving way, becomes the father figure the boys have always yearned for in their lives.

Two Women Artists Featured at Gordy's in April

Local artist, Martha Gilliom and former Muncie resident, Cheryl Anne Lorance, will exhibit their artwork during the month of April at Gordy Fine Art and Framing Co.

Beginning with a reception on Thursday, April 2nd from 5 to 8 PM, the multi-media show continues through April 30th at the downtown gallery. The public is invited to attend the opening, and light refreshments will be served. The show may also be viewed during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday, 9 to 3.

Gilliom has been working in watercolors for seventeen years, starting under the direction of Brian Gordy, owner of the gallery/frame shop and former art teacher. "Martha was a star pupil in my classes," Gordy offered. Watercolors are not for the lighthearted; they don't allow over painting, you can't remove areas that aren't working for you. It's rather a do-or-die medium that requires intense attention and forethought. Martha found those qualities in her studio persona, and the work exhibits her mastery." Featured works will include landscapes, architectural studies and still life paintings. Gilliom is the gallery assistant at Gordy's.

Cheryl Anne Lorance was born in Muncie, attended local schools and earned an undergraduate and graduate degrees in painting and sculpture from Ball State University. In 1996 she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to continue her artistic pursuits. Lorance is a master goldsmith and jewelry designer who now works mostly in bronze and glass casting. Dedicated to "the artist's life," the prolific Lorance has participated in scores of juried exhibitions and received numerous

awards and grants for her endeavors. Her work is represented in numerous galleries throughout the United States and Canada.

Lorance's bronze bells, sculptures and relief pieces have a narrative, whimsical quality, and often depict figural and architectural themes, such as acrobats and musicians, towers and boats. Rich patinas enhance the textured surfaces, a specialty of the artist. According to the her artist's statement, "...bronze reliefs, etchings, and paintings... draw the audience into a theatre of pathos: archetypal figures in tales of alienation, lost love and ironic misfortune."

Lorance returns to her hometown at the invitation of her former professor, Kenton Hall. She will teach a month-long class titled, "Bronze Casting, Chasing and Patina," in the BSU Art Department.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing is located at 224 East Main Street in the historic Boyce Block. For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Ball Jar Exhibit "Can It!" Opens This Week at Minnetrista

Minnetrista in Muncie, IN, introduces its latest exhibit Can It!, April 4 through August 23. This highly interactive original exhibit not only looks at the historical production of the Ball jar and its influence on Muncie and surrounding communities, it engages visitors in exploring their personal connections with Ball. The first 125 exhibit visitors will receive the Anniversary Edition of the Ball Blue Book(R) Guide to Preserving.

"This is an important and exciting exhibit for this area," said Rebecca Holmquist, vice president of Visitor Experience at Minnetrista. "Can It! tells an engaging and interactive story of the influence of the Ball jar." Presented by Jarden Corporation, the exhibit includes historical photos, 125 years of Ball jars, actual machinery used in early manufacturing, video, hands-on activities, live performances by Minnetrista Theatre Preserves, and an opportunity for visitors to add their own personal experiences to the exhibit.

For more than 125 years, the Ball jar has been preserving the food in American pantries across the country.

The Ball name itself is ubiquitous in East Central Indiana. "What is less well-known is the influence of the Ball jar on growing and preserving local communities," said Holmquist. "We designed this exhibit with Jarden to help visitors celebrate this shared history."

"We are honored to sponsor and partner with Minnetrista for the Can It! exhibit. The connection between our companies is natural and rich with history - definitely something to be cherished for many more years to come," said Lauren Devine, Fresh Preserving Community Manager at Jarden.

Can It! visitors will experience live demonstrations of canning machines and have the opportunity to can their own preserves. Two interactive model kitchens will provide hands-on understanding of the influence of the Ball jar. Antique jar collectors and modern-day canners will enjoy the comparisons of historical and modern canning recipes. Minnetrista Theater Preserves will perform two interpretive dramas for visitors. "This exhibit will help visitors relate the history of the Ball jar to our everyday lives," said Holmquist.

Minnetrista hours: Mon. - Sat., 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Sun., 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Admission is FREE to members. General Admission is $4 child/student; $6 senior; $7 adult.

Located along historic White River, Minnetrista includes 40 acres of beautiful gardens and grounds, a modern museum facility, an historic home, Nature Area, numerous sculptures, and a portion of the Cardinal Greenway. Minnetrista serves East Central Indiana with dynamic community activities and exhibits that honor and reflect its natural and cultural heritage. New Works by Ross Wagner is April Exhibit at The Artist Within

"New Works" will be the featured exhibit for April at the Artist Within. Local artist Ross Wagner will showcase his recent oil paintings with an extensive display that will occupy both the main gallery and the upstairs gallery space.

Mr. Wagner was graduated from Ball State University in 2007 with a BFA majoring in painting. He is originally from Brownsburg, but lives and works in Muncie.

An opening reception will be held during the First Thursday Gallery Walk April 2nd from 5-8pm; the public is invited to this free event.

"New Works" is a series of paintings that the artist Ross Wagner has done since July of 2008. The New Works has been a project for the artist to further identify himself outside the walls and influences of an educational institution. The artist's subjects are of the commonplace or familiar (things that can be touched).

All the paintings are done directly from life in order to properly describe the subject. Ross paints his experience with the subject in a language that will express it's inner harmonies.

Cardinal Greenway Construction Update

Spring weather is approaching and soon, Hoosiers will be outside listening to the birds singing, exercising under the warm sun and clearing their gardens for new growth. For many, their first stop will be the Cardinal Greenway. When they get there, they'll notice changes as they look down the trail at intersection crossings. Over the winter, while most were hiding from the cold, Cardinal Greenway staff and a host of others, were clearing brush, repairing bridges and preparing the unpaved trail segments for the trail construction that will occur later this summer.

For the last couple of years, trail users didn't see anything going on so many assumed nothing was happening. Quite the contrary. Engineering was drawing up plans, bids were being sought, an application for Transportation Enhancement funds was submitted to INDOT and hundreds of other items were checked off the 'to do' list. In April, the IN Department of Transportation will open bids to award a contract for the construction of the trail. Thirty to ninety days later, workers will begin work; when they're finished, we'll be much closer to linking Cardinal Greenway in Richmond with Cardinal Greenway in Losantville.

Cardinal Greenway begins within Richmond city limits. Two miles are currently paved. This summer, the new trail will connect at Industries Road and will be totally complete 10 miles later at Davis Myers Road. The next 10 miles, from Davis Myers to Main Street in Losantville, will include a layer of stone, but will not yet be paved. The trail will be accessible to hikers and those on mountain bikes. A future project will pave that 10 miles and will build trailheads.

"We have tried to work as much as possible this winter so that contractors can come in the Spring and begin work immediately," said Lee Elzemeyer, Wayne County Steering Committee. "The wildlife living along the trail will certainly keep trail users returning again and again."

"Adding 20 additional miles of trail will definitely be a maintenance challenge," said John Zetzl, Cardinal Greenway Board Member representing Wayne County. "We are hoping to recruit volunteers from Wayne, Randolph and Henry counties to help us keep this section as well-maintained as the rest of the trail."

Completion of this section puts us so close to total trail completion. When complete, Cardinal Greenway will be 60 miles, spanning from Richmond through Muncie to Marion. An additional two mile connection will hook up the Cardinal Greenway to the Sweetser Switch, a 3-mile trail in Sweetser, IN. Past Sweetser, the town of Converse plans to build a trail which also connects to the Sweetser Switch. The Indiana State Trails Plan outlines possible future connections that will reach into Illinois and connect with other trail systems.

Approximately 250,000 people use the trail annually. Greenway staff predict that the additional miles will bring numbers closer to a half million users. Cardinal Greenway will become the longest trail in the State of Indiana. As Governor Daniels says, "we don't have beaches or mountains, but we have some of the best cycling and running land in the country."

Economic development experts predict the trail will bring millions into the state. Many people already travel from out of state to spend a day, weekend or week on the trail. Some stay in hotels, some are campers, and many others stay with relatives who live near the trail. One gentleman was staying with his Mother, 6 hours away in Ohio, and drove over to spend the day on the trail. The state goal of trail organizations is to put a trail within 10 miles of every Hoosier. In addition to recreation, trails raise home values, improve health and fitness, help to decrease health insurance costs, create family bonding opportunities and get people back in touch with the

Minnetrista exhibits Joseph Holston's "Color in Freedom"

The Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie, IN, is pleased to announce the exhibition of Joseph Holston's "Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad" March 7 through May 3.

Painter and printmaker, Holston is best known for his use of vivid color, abstracted forms and expressive lines reflecting his appreciation for musical composition. He states, "Lines play a very important part in my art. I want the art to speak to the viewer, and for the viewer's response to become part of the art."

Minnetrista invites viewers to experience the struggle for freedom from slavery through Holston's magnificent suite of images. His dramatic motion- and color-filled paintings contrast the brutal ugliness of slavery with the overwhelming courage of those who survived it, escaped it, and worked to end it. Holston portrays the human capacity for cruelty with stunning poignancy and the human capacity for hope with measured joy.

Holston traveled the route of the Underground Railroad--the name for the system that developed to help fugitive slaves escape to the North--in preparation for creating this series. He organized the pictorial narrative like a symphony in four movements. As the story develops the color palette changes accordingly. Dark blues and grays dominate in the early movements, while bright bursts of color weave through the final one. Through it all, the viewer has a sense of "journey," of following a path, and gains a profound understanding of the struggle.

"Ideally, viewers will become so interwoven in the art that the line between where the viewer ends and the art begins no longer exists," says Holston. His abstract style draws from the cubist tradition, perfecting his ability to communicate his subjects' emotion. Viewers quickly understand the love and emotion shared between his figures. Holston depicts the bravery and dreams of the men and women Holston renders.

"Creating this body of work was both a privilege and a source of inspiration. In capturing the spiritual and emotional essence of this journey that is an essential part of my own history, I felt a strong sense of connection, and a bond with lives just a few generations removed," says Holston.

For more information about Minnetrista, visit www.minnetrista.net.

Color in Freedom was developed by University of Maryland University College and toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Busting Out - The Busts of Twila Graber Beahm at Gallery 308

Gallery 308 Living Arts Series presents "Busting Out - The Busts of Twila Graber Beahm' on March 19, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Founders Gallery at Gallery 308, 308 E. Main St. Muncie IN.

Twila Graber Beahm, a potter, hopes to make people aware of how women have been
viewed, used and exploited through the ages because of their breasts.
Her current exhibit is done with not only humor at the word play on breasts,
but also with the seriousness of physical abuse, breast cancer,
and the psychological effects of demoralizing comments and ideologies passed down from
generation to generation, and how women have become strong in dealing with those issues and triumphed.

Please join us for this unique Gallery Talk and meet the artist.
When Twila started this project, she thought she was a potter.
Upon completion she, "... realized that I was not the potter, I was the clay."
