Join Mayor Dan Canan, Community Enhancement Projects, Cardinal Greenway and other city officials at a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the Cantilever Walkway. The event will take place on Thursday, August 30, 2007, at 10:30 a.m.

If you wish to get in some exercise on your way to the event, join Cardinal Greenway volunteers, Joe and Teresa Willman, as they lead a walk from the Historic Wysor Street Depot, 700 E. Wysor Street, along the White River Greenway, through the Minnetrista campus and arrive at the north end of the Cantilever Walkway for the ceremony. For those driving, parking is available in the 909 Grille parking lot or behind the historic homes at Minnetrista.

"This ribbon-cutting event celebrates the conclusion of two construction projects that have changed the face of Wheeling Avenue, an entrance corridor for many Muncie visitors," said Lenette Freeman, Executive Director of Cardinal Greenway. "The Cantilever Walkway and the High Street Bridge are beautiful additions to the city. We are anxious to continue work on the White River Greenway so that more residents and tourists can enjoy walking, running, cycling and rollerblading along the river.

The program will include comments from John Craddock, Marjorie Zeigler, Kim Bennett representing Congressman Mike Pence, Mayor Canan and other dignitaries. Light refreshments will also be provided.

"Classic Rock & Roll Art by Tom Wilkes" on Display at Doc's Music Hall

MUNCIE, IN - GRAMMY® Award winning artist Tom Wilkes will exhibit prints from his collection September 6th through 30th at Doc's Music Hall, 215 South Walnut St. in downtown Muncie.

"Classic Rock & Roll Art by Tom Wilkes" show and sale is presented by munciedowntown.com, Rosie's Custom Frames, and The Allan Hays Company, a local internet and marketing firm partnered with Wilkes to promote the sale of The Beatles' rare "Peace to Monterey" artwork later this year.

Asked by Beatles' publicist, Derek Taylor, to create an ad for Wilkes' Monterey International Pop Festival program book in 1967, the four Beatles complied with a psychedelic masterpiece. The original "Peace to Monterey" pen and ink drawing is the only known visual art to which they all contributed. Hidden in his safe deposit box for nearly 40 years, it is believed to be the most valuable Beatles artifact ever offered for public sale.

"Lithographs of the 'Peace to Monterey' artwork will be among the prints on display at the art show and sale," said Carey Hays, spokesperson for Wilkes. "This illustration really conveys the mood of 1967 in its message of peace and love. And now, 40 years later, that message is just as relevant."

Along with the "Peace to Monterey" prints, the art show and sale features Wilkes' iconic poster from the Monterey Pop Festival, rejected album cover artwork for George Harrison and Neil Young, and select prints from his "Legends of the West" series including rare photographs of Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe.

Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will benefit Project Interspeak, a not-for-profit environmental and human rights organization devoted to planetary enhancement programs, directed by Wilkes.

An opening reception will be held during First Thursday Downtown, September 6 from 5 to 8 pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Tom Wilkes' silver foil psychedelic poster for the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 became an iconic symbol for the Summer of Love. Signed prints of the poster will be on exhibit at the "Classic Rock & Roll Art by Tom Wilkes" show and sale through September 30 at Doc's Music Hall in downtown Muncie, IN.

HGTV Show is Seeking Homes in the Muncie Area

"If Walls Could Talk" the weekly series, Sundays on HGTV, is looking to bring the show to Muncie, IN and surrounding areas to film homes with intriguing pasts and unusual stories.

Now in production on its 9th season, the series kicks off with new homeowners who make surprising historical discoveries about their homes as they explore and restore them. A lucky few will be amazed to learn that the historic artifacts they’ve discovered are worth a fortune when the “If Walls Could Talk” appraiser drops by for a look.

The producers are looking for people who have privately owned homes, and through restoration and renovation, have uncovered items (hidden in the walls, floors, attic, secret passageways, etc) that relate back to an interesting history of the house or significant homeowners.

Then, by doing some research, they discover an interesting/unusual story linking the artifacts they found to a significant past homeowner or a significant history of the house itself. The show will bring in an appraiser to appraise the items for homeowners who believe the artifacts they found might be valuable.

Each half-hour episode features homeowners from across the country who share their amazing discoveries. Recent stories include:

* A Connecticut family moves into a neglected 1800’s Victorian only to find antiques and a mysterious locked cabinet. What they find inside tells the touching story of their home’s original owner. Then, in the attic they discover original paintings and the “If Walls Could Talk” appraiser pays them a visit. The expert reveals their discoveries are worth thousands of dollars.

* A husband and wife turn a turn of the century bank into their dream home. In the process they find the original bank vault full of safety deposit boxes that are still locked!

* A Colorado couple find books, clothing and jewelry in their new home. The clues add up to the story of a best-selling author who lived in the house until she disappeared.

* A New York bachelor buys a hundred year old mansion and makes a chilling discovery in the basement - his home sweet home used to be a funeral home!

The series, which premiered in September of 1998, has aired more than 200 episodes –each filmed in historic neighborhoods throughout the country.

If Walls Could Talk is produced for HGTV by High Noon Entertainment in Denver, CO.

Homeowners who would like to be considered for the program should contact Sara Adams at (303) 712-3125 or email at SAdams@highnoonentertainment.com

Local Women Kick Off Exhibit Season at Gordy's

Martha Gilliom and Shonet Lambert Martin will join owner Genny Gordy for the September art show at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in downtown Muncie. Titled, "Works on Paper," the show includes watercolors by Gilliom, collages by Martin and mixed media and watercolors by Gordy.

A reception for the artists will be held during the First Thursday event on September 6, 2007 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. The other area galleries will also have openings during the same time period, offering a full evening of art for all ages.

Gilliom began watercolor painting in 1993 with Brian Gordy and continued studying with him for over ten years. She has participated in numerous juried exhibits, including the Minnetrista Annual Show, Red-tail Conservancy's annual, Open Spaces, Art About the Land, and the Art Association of Randolph County exhibit. Her recent paintings display a grace and maturity in the handling of the elusive watercolors. When asked to categorize this series, Gilliom thoughtfully replied,"They are all about the effect of light on objects. Contrast, then, became the subject matter, as much as the scene itself." Looking at the grouping, the artist realized there are windows in most of the pieces. "An unplanned theme with no deep meaning," according to Gilliom.

A yoga and aerobics instructor at Ball State University, Gilliom began picture framing at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in 2006.

Shonet Lambert Martin is known as a potter and weaver as well as a collage artist. A graduate of Ball State University, Shonet has taught art in public and private settings and currently works at the Muncie Children's Museum.

The past five years have seen a new type of art being produced by the prolific artist. Tearing, gluing, and enhancing papers of every color, weight and texture, Martin works loosely from natural forms - figures, pods, and acorns float on multi-colored backgrounds with metallic dots dancing alongside. Sometimes creating is easy and the pieces flow together and fill the drawer under her giant studio table. Occasionally, the petite artist wrestles the works to the end. She talks about the acorn that almost won the battle. "It was giving me a good workout and my family could hear my admonishments downstairs." Martin smiles, "Wouldn't you know it would be the piece chosen for the postcard." (See acorn image, attached).

Genny Gordy seldom exhibits in the family-owned frame shop/gallery. Husband, Brian, is the more prolific artist, dedicated to early-morning sessions in the backyard studio, and consistently entering both local and national exhibits. In contrast, Genny's artwork is born in spurts and pieces at the drafting table, some of which Brian picks up and frames. "This is my favorite piece," he says of the oil pastel that appears to be of a green olive on bending stem, falling into a sea of blue, with other stems in line close behind. A series of scratches in the wall behind the scene number sixty five, causing Brian to dub the piece, "If Olive to Be 65."

If there is another meaning to the piece, the artist herself isn't saying. "I want to allow my work to mean something entirely different to another viewer," she offers. "I'm usually spontaneously driven to create something, as opposed to Brian's more disciplined mode of operation, and it holds meaning for me at that moment. I don't normally take the next step of showing my work to others, but the idea of showing with two dear friends was really exciting."

The three-woman exhibit continues through September 29th and may be seen during normal business hours after the opening: Monday though Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. For more information call 284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com .

Gordy Fine Art and Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Civic Theatre.

- PRESS RELEASE SUBMITTED BY GORDY FINE ART & FRAMING -

Second City Returns to Civic Theatre

Legendary comedy troupe The Second City makes a return visit to Downtown Muncie with their new show "One Nation, Under Blog" for one show only on Saturday, September 22 at 8:00pm.

Tickets for the show are $20 for regular seating and $25 for premium seating in either the first 7 rows of the main section, or the Balcony 21-Club featuring a cash bar. The two-night-only performances will be on the main stage at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street, Muncie, Indiana. Tickets are available by calling 765-288-PLAY or at the Box Office.

THE SECOND CITY was started in a converted Chinese laundry on Chicago's north side in 1959 and has since become the premiere comedy institution of the world. With theatres in Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Las Vegas and Cleveland; training centers in each of these cities as well as New York and Los Angeles; a corporate division that offers creative services to the business world; a TV and film division; and touring groups that bring its unique brand of improv-based sketch comedy all over the world, The Second City has become, in the words of the New York Times, "A Comedy Empire." This world-famous comedy troupe has been the training ground for such legendary comics as John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Mike Myers, Martin Short, Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, George Wendt, Shelley Long, Chris Farley and many, many more. Their new show, "One Nation, Under Blog" features straight-from-the-headlines topical humor as well as the best of their sketches, songs and improvisations from THE SECOND CITY'S forty-five-plus year history.

Not only will an evening with THE SECOND CITY provide audiences with the chance to see comedy stars in the making, but they will also have the opportunity to see absolutely hilarious satire and cutting-edge improvisation. In addition to national and international topics, the troupe will also weave local issues and politics into the show by obtaining local newspapers in advance of the performance and incorporating Muncie-based humor into the sketches. No topic or subject matter is off limits for THE SECOND CITY. If your parents asked you not to speak about it at the dinner table, chances are it will be made fun of in an evening with THE SECOND CITY.

This show will mark The Second City's third visit in as many years to Muncie Civic Theatre, having played to sold-out crowds in 2005 & 2006.

For tickets and information call 765-288-PLAY.

Gallery 308 Announces Sept. Exhibit by Walt Bistline

"Earthbound" - Photographs of the Midwest By Earlham College Artist in Residence Walt Bistline Opens at Gallery 308 in September

A corporate attorney in New York, Dallas and Houston for 25 years, photographer Walt Bistline resigned his law firm partnership and returned to graduate school. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004, he joined the faculty at Earlham College (Richmond) where he is currently Artist in Residence in Photography.

A landscape photographer, Bistline moved to the Midwest after 35 years in large cities in the east and south. Living in a small Midwestern community led to his discovery of a wealth of new photographic material. " Earthbound: Photographs of the Midwest" is the result of three years of exploring his new surroundings and will be on view from September 5 through the 29th at Gallery 308.

An opening reception for Bistline will be held at the Gallery on September 6; the public is invited to meet the artist.

Bistline's photographs have been included in more than 125 public, private and corporate collections, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Recently, his work was shown at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in the People's Republic of China, Seattle's Photographic Center Northwest, Fleury Gallery and Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston. Earlier this year, his work was exhibited at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati, OH.

Since moving to Indiana, he has won awards in juried competitions for three years running at the Richmond Arts Museum (including "Best of Show" in 2004 and "Best Photograph" in 2005 and 2006). He has received prizes from the Swope Museum in Terre Haute and The Arts Museum of Greater Lafayette. Earlham College hosted a solo exhibition of his work in 2006, and Indiana University East staged a 10-year retrospective of his photography the same year.

See a sample of his images at: www.flickr.com/photos/waltbistline .

Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Contributions to Gallery 308 are tax-deductible. For more information about gallery hours, volunteer and donor opportunities, please call 765-289-8575.

Muncie Civic Theatre presents Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Muncie Civic Theatre will present the third production of its new Family Theatre Workshop Series with CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by Richard R. George, based on the book by Roald Dahl. The play will perform on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 3, 10 & 11 at 7:30pm as well as on Saturday & Sunday, August 4, 5 & 11 at 2:00pm. The performances will be on the main stage at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street, Muncie, Indiana. All tickets are $5 and may be purchased by calling 765-288-PLAY or in person at the Box Office. Box Office hours are Wednesday through Friday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and one hour prior to each performance.

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is an imaginative and fast-paced adaptation of the children's literary classic by Roald Dahl. The story follows Charlie Bucket in his adventurous tour of Willy Wonka's world-famous Chocolate Factory. Audiences will see Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, Grandpa Joe, Willy Wonka and Charlie himself come to life, and all involved will discover the true meaning of teamwork, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Under the direction of Muncie Civic Director of Education Marty Grubbs, the production is the part a series of offerings collectively called "The Family Theatre Workshop." The concept of the Workshop is based on the award-winning and nationally recognized Musical Theatre Mentorship Workshop developed by Muncie Civic Executive Director Darrin Murrell and his wife Julie Barber in 1998 while working in Portland, Oregon with American Heritage Theatre Project and Portland Parks & Recreation. The Workshop was started at Muncie Civic as the Young Actors Workshop upon their arrival in 2003 and has expanded this year into a full Acting Academy including both performance-based playlab classes and specifically targeted skill-based and introductory classes. The Family Theatre Workshop is the advanced level of the expanded program.

The Family Theatre Workshop production of CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is cast with a combination of young actors who have auditioned to get into the advance-level acting program as well as adult actors, some of whom serve as teachers for the advanced acting class. The students and teachers, as well as the other adult cast members, meet to rehearse as part of a summer camp experience for the students. Other aspects of the camp are designed to give the students the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the production process including scenery, costumes, props, and publicity. With the focus of the class entirely on a single production, the goal is for the public performances to be of a quality equal to regular Muncie Civic Main Stage subscription series offerings, but at a family-focused price and including the educational aspect of the camp classes.

The adult actors/teachers in the project include Civic veterans Ivy Tech Instructor Sean Christian Smith as Willy Wonka and Jan Etchison as Grandpa Joe. Also in the adult cast are Sasha Jones, Rusty Ramstrom and Melissa Donahue . They will be joined by a group of 24 student performers ranging in age from 7 to 16 years old. Many of the students are veterans of the Young Actors Workshop Program and Muncie Civic Main Stage shows.

For tickets and information call 765-288-PLAY.
