Celebrate the Arts at First Thursdays Downtown

Downtown Muncie celebrates the arts every First Thursday from 5 to 8pm, with art gallery exhibit openings, meet-the artist receptions, live music and hors d'oeuvres.
Some of the gallery events at the next First Thursday, September 6th:

~ The Artist Within, 313 S Walnut Street - 765-289-7895 ~

The Artist Within will feature paintings by Lynnette Whitesell throughout September. "containments: works of a small town grandeur" is the exhibit of a series of paintings created by Lynnette while on an Indiana individual artist grant. An opening reception will be held Thursday, September 6 from 5-8pm.

Lynette is a painter exploring with acrylics and oils, on both canvas and panel. Lyn was born, raised and continues to reside in Hartford City , Indiana with her husband and three children. For nearly fifteen years, Lyn has worked as a graphic designer/illustrator and art director in the East Central Indiana area. For the past 8 years she's been employed at CS Kern as the Senior Art Director. She's won numerous design awards locally, regionally and nationally. Since 1998, Lyn's
work has been displayed in numerous art shows, juried exhibitions and galleries throughout the midwest. Lyn actively participates as member at ArtWorks gallery of Muncie.

"Sculptures with a Whimsical Musical Feeling" will be the exibit for September at Artworks.

Artist Kim Kneist will display Medium Galvanized & Copper Metal Sculptures at the non-profit gallery and shop, with an opening reception during First Thursdays on September 6, from 5:30 to 8:30pm.

GRAMMY Award winning artist Tom Wilkes will exhibit prints from his collection through September at Doc's Music Hall, 215 South Walnut St. in downtown Muncie.

"Classic Rock & Roll Art by Tom Wilkes" show and sale features artwork from the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967; rejected album cover art for George Harrison and Neil Young; and select prints from his "Legends of the West" series, including rare photographs of Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and bluegrass legend Bill Monroe.

Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will benefit Wilkes' Project Interspeak, a not-for-profit environmental and human rights organization devoted to planetary enhancement programs.

The exhibit is presented by munciedowntown.com, Rosie's Custom Frames, and The Allan Hays Company, a local internet and marketing firm in partnership with Wilkes to promote the sale of The Beatles' "Peace to Monterey" artwork.

Allan and Carey Hays will represent Wilkes at opening reception during First Thursdays Downtown, Sept. 6 from 5 to 8pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public during Doc's business hours.

"Earthbound" - Photographs of the Midwest By Earlham College Artist in Residence Walt Bistline Opens at Gallery 308 in September.

A corporate attorney in New York, Dallas and Houston for 25 years, photographer Walt Bistline resigned his law firm partnership and returned to graduate school. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004, he joined the faculty at Earlham College (Richmond) where he is currently Artist in Residence in Photography.

An opening reception for Bistline will be held at the Gallery on September 6; the public is invited to meet the artist.

The nonprofit community art gallery is located at 308 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.

Martha Gilliom and Shonet Lambert Martin will join owner Genny Gordy for the September art show at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in downtown Muncie. Titled, "Works on Paper," the show includes watercolors by Gilliom, collages by Martin and mixed media and watercolors by Gordy.

A reception for the artists will be held during the First Thursday event on September 6, 2007 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. The other area galleries will also have openings during the same time period, offering a full evening of art for all ages.

The three-woman exhibit continues through September 29th and may be seen during normal business hours after the opening: Monday though Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. For more information call 284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.
