"Earthbound" - Photographs of the Midwest By Earlham College Artist in Residence Walt Bistline Opens at Gallery 308 in September
A corporate attorney in New York, Dallas and Houston for 25 years, photographer Walt Bistline resigned his law firm partnership and returned to graduate school. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004, he joined the faculty at Earlham College (Richmond) where he is currently Artist in Residence in Photography.
A landscape photographer, Bistline moved to the Midwest after 35 years in large cities in the east and south. Living in a small Midwestern community led to his discovery of a wealth of new photographic material. " Earthbound: Photographs of the Midwest" is the result of three years of exploring his new surroundings and will be on view from September 5 through the 29th at Gallery 308.
An opening reception for Bistline will be held at the Gallery on September 6; the public is invited to meet the artist.
Bistline's photographs have been included in more than 125 public, private and corporate collections, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Recently, his work was shown at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in the People's Republic of China, Seattle's Photographic Center Northwest, Fleury Gallery and Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston. Earlier this year, his work was exhibited at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati, OH.
Since moving to Indiana, he has won awards in juried competitions for three years running at the Richmond Arts Museum (including "Best of Show" in 2004 and "Best Photograph" in 2005 and 2006). He has received prizes from the Swope Museum in Terre Haute and The Arts Museum of Greater Lafayette. Earlham College hosted a solo exhibition of his work in 2006, and Indiana University East staged a 10-year retrospective of his photography the same year.
