October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Happening Oct. 2, from 5-9pm, featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, performances and demonstrations, free food, music in the streets and more. The beloved Humpback Barn Festival returns this year, courtesy of Gallery 308, and with a new name - Arts Kaleidoscope. The public reception that opens the event is Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Arts Kaleidoscope Festival Day is Oct. 4, 10 to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. More than 70 poets and artists from all over Indiana will be featured, and there will be a memorial to the festival's creator, Mildred Trivers, who passed away in 2007. September 27 - Museum Day - find free admission cards in the Sept. 08 issue of Smithsonian magazine or download at www.smithsonianmag.com. Enjoy free general admission to Minnetrista and The Muncie Children's Museum, along with the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Ball State Museum of Art among participating museums.

September 27 - A Farmers Market Cooking Demonstration at Minnetrista at 9:00 a.m. Enjoy this FREE cooking demonstration featuring chefs from the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation. All demonstrations include locally grown ingredients found at Farmers Market.

September 27 - BSU Homecoming Party at Doc's Music Hall, with free trolley service from campus to downtown from 7p-2a. Free cover. Music by Midwest Hype, Prizzy Prizzy Please, and Totally Michael.

SEPTEMBER ONGOING

Through September - The Artist Within will feature the watercolors of Cindy Turner during September. There will be an opening reception First Thursday September 4th from 5-8pm. Her show will remain up through Sept. 27, 2008.

Through September - Gallery 308 Opens a new exhibit, "Copyright Propaganda: Street Art" on display through September. This exhibition features the work of two artists: Mike Boyd and Will Britton. T

Through September - Twila Graber Beahm, a local Anderson, IN artist, will display her ceramics at ArtWorks Gallery from September 1st to the 30th. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7:30 pm.

Through September - Painter Alan Patrick will showcase his oil paintings in a new exhibit entitled "Heartland" at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. A reception for the artist will be held during the traditional First Thursday art event on September 4, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

September 22 through October 31 - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Through October - Minnetrista Farmers Market meets every Wednesday evening from 4pm until sold out, and every Saturday morning from 8am to noon. Featuring vegetables, fruits, flowers, eggs, honey, baked goods, meat, cheese and much more.

September 15 thru December 13 - Cornerstone Arts Program classes for youth and adults in numerous areas of the arts, including visual arts, dance and music. Register online at www.cornerstonearts.org.

September 20 thru October 19 - Open Space: Art About the Land at Minnetrista, an art competition and exhibition which recognizes and encourages artists in East Central Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to help the Red-tail Conservancy.

September 20 thru January 4 - Snakes, Rattles and Holes at Minnetrista, a walk-through replica of a snake's skeleton that utilizes videos, artifacts, text panels and interactive elements to teach visitors about snakes of the Midwestern United States.

September 27 thru January 9 - Earthworks at Minnetrista. Native American cultures in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia constructed geometric and animal-shaped earth works that often rivaled Stonehenge in their astronomical accuracy. See virtual reconstructions of these works from 39 sites.

Every Monday - Jazz at the Fickle Peach features Ralph Johnson on drums, Paul Rhine on double-bass and flute, and Phil Cooley on Piano. They perform every Monday night from 9 to 11.

Daily at Minnetrista--Discover Oakhurst Gardens or the Nature Area (all day); Historical House Tour 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.; Apples & Cider Daily, 2 p.m.; and Nature & Garden Fun, Daily, 4 p.m.

OCTOBER EVENTS

October 1-4 - The fourth annual "Create for the Cure" will take place at The Artist Within. Local artists have painted a "Plate for the Cure," and the plates they painted will be in a silent auction during the week. The winning bids will be notified Sun. October 5th, and the monies will be donated to the Komen Foundation.

Through October - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Through October - Artworks Gallery will exhibit beadmaker Lisa Atchison's "Turning Over a New Leaf," with an opening reception during ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 2. Music will be provided by harpist Megan Upchurch.

Through October - The Artist Within will feature artwork by two local artists through October. Thurman Grantham will showcase new sculptural pieces in "Thurman's World of Flowers." Yorktown native Brent Engelmann will display his digital photo collages. "Trippin' through the 70's" includes photos of rock legends. An opening reception will be held during ArtsWalk, Oct. 2, from 5 to 9pm.
