Weekly Downtown E-News 9/11/08

Muncie Downtown Business Council will have a booth at the Business 2 Business Expo at the Horizon Center on Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 11am to 5pm. We need a few volunteers to man the table - if you are able to work an hour or more, please call Cheryl Crowder at (765) 282-7897 or email info [at] munciedowntown [dot] com.
If your Downtown business or organization would like to provide any flyers, brochures or promotional materials to be distributed at our booth, you may drop them off at the Downtown Development office. A few last-minute booths are available; if your business would like to have a booth at the expo, call Nance Buchert at (765) 751-9114. Special rates are offered for Downtown Business Council members.

Anyone interested in helping build the Downtown Muncie float for the BSU Homecoming Parade should come to the Sign Shop on Granville on Wednesday, Sept. 24th at 6pm. Please help spread the word, and bring a friend! Volunteers are needed to help walk the parade. Lineup will be at Central High School between 7 and 8am. Old Washington Street Festival returns to the East Central Neighborhood for its 32nd year! The festival will be held on the four blocks of East Washington Street between Madison and Hackley Streets on Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.Click Here for info.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts is now registering for fall classes that will start on September 15. The Cornerstone Arts Program offers a wide variety of 12-week long classes for all ages, including Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, Language, Music, Writing, Kindermusik and Private Lessons. SEPTEMBER EVENTS

September 12 - Rockers For Knockers, a benefit show at Center Stage. All proceeds will go to the cancer center to pay for mammograms that some women cannot afford. The show starts at 6pm and will feature Hit-n-Run, Missing Mercer, Mud Eye Joe, Mike Milligan and Steam Shovel, and Waylon T. & the Blues Bus. This is an all ages show, kids 12 and under get in free.

September 12 - Minnetrista Minne-trip, Indiana Art and Wine, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.Travel to beautiful Nashville, Indiana for a day of wine tasting, gallery exploration, and shopping. Space is limited. Lunch is included.

September 18 - Gallery 308 presents "Art in a Democracy," part of the Gallery's monthly Living Arts Series. This program is a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Patsy Donn, and will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 West Bradford, Muncie. The panel includes local artists, art historians and educators such as Mark Sawrie, Lucinda Rarick, Jim Faulkner, Bill Inman and Juli Eflin.

Through September - The Artist Within will feature the watercolors of Cindy Turner during September. There will be an opening reception First Thursday September 4th from 5-8pm. Her show will remain up through Sept. 27, 2008.

Through September - Gallery 308 Opens a new exhibit, "Copyright Propaganda: Street Art" on display through September. This exhibition features the work of two artists: Mike Boyd and Will Britton. T

Through September - Twila Graber Beahm, a local Anderson, IN artist, will display her ceramics at ArtWorks Gallery from September 1st to the 30th. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7:30 pm.

Through September - Painter Alan Patrick will showcase his oil paintings in a new exhibit entitled "Heartland" at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. A reception for the artist will be held during the traditional First Thursday art event on September 4, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

September 22 through Octoberr 31 - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Through October - Minnetrista Farmers Market meets every Wednesday evening from 4pm until sold out, and every Saturday morning from 8am to noon. Featuring vegetables, fruits, flowers, eggs, honey, baked goods, meat, cheese and much more.

September 15 - December 13 - Cornerstone Arts Program classes for youth and adults in numerous areas of the arts, including visual arts, dance and music. Register online at www.cornerstonearts.org.

Every Monday - Jazz at the Fickle Peach features Ralph Johnson on drums, Paul Rhine on double-bass and flute, and Phil Cooley on Piano. They perform every Monday night from 9 to 11.

LOOKING AHEAD...

October 2 - October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, demonstrations, food, music in the streets and more.

October 4 - Muncie Music Fest returns for a second year to the streets of Downtown Muncie. This is an all ages gated event. Stay tuned to munciedowntown.com and munciemusicfest.com for details.

October 7-11 - Middletown Idol Talent Competition at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Visit www.cornerstonearts.org for more information.
