Cardinal Home Medical and Kohl's are proud to sponsor the annual Turkey Trot non-competitive run and walk on the Cardinal Greenway Thanksgiving morning. The event offers a variety of distances, refreshments, and family time.
The Turkey Trot begins on the Cardinal Greenway at the Wysor Street Depot, 700 E. Wysor, Muncie.
Turkey Trot provides a fun, family-friendly event to show off the Greenways to visiting family and friends; not to mention a great way to build up an appetite - or burn a few extra calories before the big meal!
Pre-registration: $7.00/person
$12.00/family (family = living in same household)
pre-registrations must be received by 4:00 p.m. November 21, 2008.

Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, November 6th, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries launch their monthly exhibits on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.

These artists work in drawing, mixed media, oils, pastels, watercolor, sculpture and photography. "Creative Artists Guild" is a support group that offers encouragement to promote the development of the arts, as well as contributing to various local charities. Members take pride in their great fellowship and positive critiques and encouragement. Member artists have exhibited locally at the Maring Hunt Library, Robin's Nest, and the Blue Bottle. Guild members exhibiting their work in this show include: Sherman Bragg, Nancy Brown, Mike Fields, De Hale, Steve Hammond, Eric Murphy, Rose Ray and Tanya Ray. The exhibit and sale will run November 4-29, 2008.
An artists' reception will be held from 5-8 pm, Thursday, November 6, 2008.
Beginning Saturday November 8th, the Artist Within will be open from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm on Saturdays. We are also adding Sunday afternoon hours November 9th and will be open from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sundays. These new hours will remain in effect through the Holiday Season.

ArtWorks Gallery's featured artist for November is Michael Hoots, in an exhibit titled "Turning Wood Into Objects d'Arte." There will be an oening reception during First Thursday, November 6, 2008 - 5:30pm to 8:30pm. The exhibit runs through November 30th.
Michael Hoots started MatMar WoodWorks several years ago after becoming tired of the corporate world. "At the time I focused mainly on home renovation trim carpentry and custom decks while living in Georgia. MatMar WoodWorks took a few years hiatus when I decided to reenter the corporate world as a manager of a chemical plant in Ohio and then relocated to Indiana as a General Manager/VP of a small locally owned business. When asked to relocate along with the business, I decided to make a living doing what I really loved, working with wood".
Michael was introduced to wood working by his father and grade school shop teachers. As his skills and tool collection grew, so did the complexity of his projects.
A few years ago Michael made the choice to either learn how to use the lathe given to him by his father over 30 years ago, or give it to one of his sons and let it gather dust in their homes. Once he learned the basics he stated: "I was addicted".
Michael's first pieces were simple bowls and plates made out of solid blocks of wood. He began gluing various species of wood together after reviewing a 1976 article in "Fine Woodworking" on segmented bowls. He stared experimenting with different forms, deriving inspiration from ancient vases in National Geographic, forms in nature and other art sources. He eventually realized that the secret to a beautiful piece of turned wood lay not only in the turning, but in the preparation and especially the finishing. Now over half his house and most of his workshop is covered with pieces waiting to be turned.
Michael's current work primarily consists of segmented turnings made from both domestic (ash, walnut, maple, osage orange) and exotic (wenge, rosewood, purple-heart) woods.
Michael states that: "I am constantly trying new forms, techniques and finishes. A lot of time and effort is put into each piece and I want everyone who owns one of my pieces to be completely satisfied. The look and feel of a carefully crafted piece of woodworking can bring warmth and personality to a room like nothing else can".

To kick things off, the Gallery is hosting a reception, Thursday November 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Get a sneak peek at the art treasures to be on the auction block--and place your bids early. The "auction preview" (and early bidding) will continue through the month until auction night.
You may also purchase wine exclusively bottled for the event by Grape Expectations in Carmel. Well-known local artist Jim Faulkner has designed unique one-of-a-kind "collectible" labels for the wine bottles.
Once again, the proceeds from the silent auction and sale of wine will be divided evenly between Gallery 308 and A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Fund).
Admission to the November 6 opening reception is free and open to the public. Tickets for the dinner and auction are also available at the Gallery, 308 East Main, Muncie, or can be purchased from Sherry Powell at 765-282-0204. If art communities had royal members, watercolorist Jim Faulkner would wear a crown. Much-admired by patrons, other artists and former students - he taught in the Ball State Art Department - Faulkner has lived the romantic life we all like to believe artists live. And he's still living it.
On several acres just outside the city limits, the artist, along with wife, Eleanor, raised and trained dogs, ran a successful kennel and pursued a solid art career. Both a plein air and studio landscape painter, Faulkner rigs his van to serve as mini-studio as he travels back roads of Indiana, searching for old barns, century-old hilltop brick homes, former garages in small towns. Back home, he applies finishing touches in his converted grand old barn studio. Normally a solitary painter, Faulkner spent a couple of years traveling the state with comrade David Dale, as they painted and sketched the entire course of the Wabash River.
"I paint the meadows, woods, homesteads, towns and people of the mid-west. Trying to find meaning in the stillness of an abandoned farm, or the quiet of a snow-covered woods, or even the aging of the human face. If I find that meaning and quality, the painting is worthwhile to me and I hope to the viewers of my work," offers the soft-spoken Faulkner.

"Creative Artists Guild" is a support group that offers encouragement to promote the development of the arts, as well as contributing to various local charities. Members take pride in their great fellowship and positive critiques and encouragement. Member artists have exhibited locally at the Maring Hunt Library, Robin's Nest, and the Blue Bottle. Guild members exhibiting their work in this show include: Sherman Bragg, Nancy Brown, Mike Fields, De Hale, Steve Hammond, Eric Murphy, Rose Ray and Tanya Ray. The exhibit and sale will run November 4-29, 2008.
An artists' reception will be held from 5-8 pm, Thursday, November 6, 2008.

Harvest Moon Film Festival Announces Festival Schedule
Harvest Moon Film Festival: A Gathering of Films and Filmmakers Celebrating the Midwest is November 13-15th in downtown Muncie. The festival has numerous film screenings of the eleven independent films featured along with question and answer sessions and select films. There will also be an education seminar featuring professional television and film director Roger Young, and a gala dinner and awards ceremony.The festival will be opening on Thursday, November 13th with the Gala Dinner at 6:00pm at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Absolute Zero
This intriguing film tells the story of a refrigerated train and a man who is trapped inside an empty wagon. The man writes a grim log on the wall with a first-hand account of death by freezing. Only later it is discovered that the refrigeration unit wasn't operating. The temperature in the wagon never fell below 68 degrees and yet the man records the symptoms of hypothermia as he dies. 27 minutes
Bresson & Adeline
Bresson & Adeline is the story of a brother and sister who suffer a peculiar affliction: they were never born. They dress up, bang pans, jump and shout at their mother and father, but to no avail. The children find themselves slowly fading away as their identities are lost. This is a short film about life, creativity, and most of all, the choices we make. 5 minutes
The Cave: An Adaptation of Plato's Allegory in Clay

Mintonette: An Exploration of Title IX
This documentary film explores the cultural significance of Title IX legislation, which bans gender discrimination in education. The Rescue of Raven 1-1
Amidst all of the controversy with the Vietnam War and the military efforts, a pilot flying for a secret division of the armed forces in Southeast Asia was shot down and stranded. 'The Rescue of Raven 1-1' is a documentary film telling the story of the day he was shot down, the Air America pilot who rescued him, and their reunion years later. 25 minutes
A Ripple of Hope
Advised against appearing before an inner city crowd in Indianapolis the night Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, Robert Kennedy delivered an extemporaneous speech that brought a sense of peace to the city. This documentary film dramatically narrates the events of that tragic day 40 years ago through the eyes of those who were there. Featuring footage of Robert Kennedy's speech at Ball State University in Muncie and digitally restored news footage and original music by Grammy Award winner John Colby. 54 minutes
Small Avalanches
Set in the summer of 1971, this film explores a singular event in a young girl's life. Cornerstone Center for the Arts is partnering with Americans for the Arts to host an Emerging Leaders Creative Conversation in Muncie on Friday, October 31, 2008 from 11:30 - 1:00 p.m.

Watercolors by Jim Faulkner on Exhibit during November at Gordys
Watercolors by Jim Faulkner will be exhibited at Gordy Fine Art and Framing during the month of November and will include both new pieces and other related favorites. A reception for the artist will be held during the First Thursday downtown event on November 6, 2008, from 5 to 8 PM. The public is invited to attend and light refreshments will be served.
If art communities had royal members, watercolorist Jim Faulkner would wear a crown. Much-admired by patrons, other artists and former students - he taught in the Ball State Art Department - Faulkner has lived the romantic life we all like to believe artists live. And he's still living it.
On several acres just outside the city limits, the artist, along with wife, Eleanor, raised and trained dogs, ran a successful kennel and pursued a solid art career. Both a plein air and studio landscape painter, Faulkner rigs his van to serve as mini-studio as he travels back roads of Indiana, searching for old barns, century-old hilltop brick homes, former garages in small towns. Back home, he applies finishing touches in his converted grand old barn studio. Normally a solitary painter, Faulkner spent a couple of years traveling the state with comrade David Dale, as they painted and sketched the entire course of the Wabash River.
"I paint the meadows, woods, homesteads, towns and people of the mid-west. Trying to find meaning in the stillness of an abandoned farm, or the quiet of a snow-covered woods, or even the aging of the human face. If I find that meaning and quality, the painting is worthwhile to me and I hope to the viewers of my work," offers the soft-spoken Faulkner.

ArtWorks November Exhibit: Michael Hoots "Turning Wood Into Objects d'Arte"
ArtWorks Gallery's featured artist for November is Michael Hoots, in an exhibit titled "Turning Wood Into Objects d'Arte." There will be an oening reception during First Thursday, November 6, 2008 - 5:30pm to 8:30pm. The exhibit runs through November 30th.Michael Hoots started MatMar WoodWorks several years ago after becoming tired of the corporate world. "At the time I focused mainly on home renovation trim carpentry and custom decks while living in Georgia. MatMar WoodWorks took a few years hiatus when I decided to reenter the corporate world as a manager of a chemical plant in Ohio and then relocated to Indiana as a General Manager/VP of a small locally owned business. When asked to relocate along with the business, I decided to make a living doing what I really loved, working with wood".
Michael was introduced to wood working by his father and grade school shop teachers. As his skills and tool collection grew, so did the complexity of his projects.
A few years ago Michael made the choice to either learn how to use the lathe given to him by his father over 30 years ago, or give it to one of his sons and let it gather dust in their homes. Once he learned the basics he stated: "I was addicted".
Michael's first pieces were simple bowls and plates made out of solid blocks of wood. He began gluing various species of wood together after reviewing a 1976 article in "Fine Woodworking" on segmented bowls. He stared experimenting with different forms, deriving inspiration from ancient vases in National Geographic, forms in nature and other art sources. He eventually realized that the secret to a beautiful piece of turned wood lay not only in the turning, but in the preparation and especially the finishing. Now over half his house and most of his workshop is covered with pieces waiting to be turned.
Michael's current work primarily consists of segmented turnings made from both domestic (ash, walnut, maple, osage orange) and exotic (wenge, rosewood, purple-heart) woods.
Michael states that: "I am constantly trying new forms, techniques and finishes. A lot of time and effort is put into each piece and I want everyone who owns one of my pieces to be completely satisfied. The look and feel of a carefully crafted piece of woodworking can bring warmth and personality to a room like nothing else can".
" MatMar WoodWorks was named after my sons, Matthew and Marshall. They have always given me great joy and I consider them to be my best work".

Minnetrista Partners with Muncie Children's Museum for Memberships
Minnetrista and the Muncie Children's Museum have teamed up to invite their members to explore both museums. Beginning November 1, each organization will include a one-time free admission pass to the other institution when an individual or family joins or renews their annual membership. Both organizations currently offer unlimited admissions, newsletters, special programs and events, and gift shop discounts to their own members. The added one-visit passes will allow up to four persons to also experience the other museum at no charge.

All Beers Considered This Sunday Oct. 26
IPR's second annual "All Beers Considered" happens on Sunday October 26th from 2-5pm at The Fickle Peach in Downtown Muncie. This year we'll be under the tent in front as well as inside The Fickle Peach giving us more room to enjoy the fun and camaraderie. We'll have a variety of local & regional beers brought in by The Fickle Peach for sampling, paired with organic cheeses from The Downtown Farmstand; tasty snacks from Casella's Kitchen; brewery tours and other unique silent auction gifts; and new this year - a beer making "how to" demonstration.

BSU FAMILY WEEKEND - A reminder to all Downtown Muncie businesses and merchants that this weekend is "Family Weekend" for the BSU parents and their students! We would like to encourage everyone to stay open until at least 7pm on Saturday October 25th.
Families have been given the option of "Discovering Downtown" at 4pm, following the football game. All of the postcards we collected throughout the summer from freshman orientation have also been sent out inviting folk to come and visit us while they are in town. We mailed about 1000 postcards. Let's make sure our doors are open to them!

FMMusic and Doc's Music Hall will sponsor the Trolley for FREE SAFE RIDES to and from Downtown and campus on Saturday night.

The Muncie Downtown Business Council will meet Wednesday, October. 29th, at 3pm in the Star Press building conference room. DBC meetings typically last one hour.
The agenda will include the slating of new officers for the next two-year term, and an update on the continued outreach between Downtown Muncie and Ball State University.
Downtown Business Council is an excellent opportunity to network with your downtown peers, keep informed of downtown happenings, and learn all about the Downtown Business Council and our continued efforts to market your business and our downtown neighborhood.
Members will be available to answer any questions about the Downtown Business Council, and membership applications will be available for anyone who wants to join. Please come by, bring a friend, and help take part in making Downtown Muncie the best place to be.
You don't have to be a DBC member to attend the meetings, but we encourage your involvement in the organization. Downtown Business Council is not limited to businesses and merchants. Residents, organizations and supporters of downtown in general are also welcomed to join DBC.

"Writing From Memory & Experience" - Fall Writing Workshop at Gallery 308
Sarah Chavez, an instructor in English Composition and Literature at Ball State University, will lead a writing workshop on Saturday November 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. The workshop will be held in the Founders Room at Gallery 308, which is located at 308 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.
Participants must enroll no later than November 3. To sign up, contact Gallery 308 by phone at 289-8575 or by email at gallery308@gmail.com. The size of the workshop is limited so would-be participants are encouraged to enroll early.
The cost of the workshop is $10. Payment is due by November 8. Checks should be made payable to Gallery 308.
Chavez teaches composition at Ball State and has an interest in contemporary and confessional poetry, feminism, and gender studies. Among other things, she has been an assistant poetry editor for a Chicano literary publication, and has presented her work at creative writing workshops around the Midwest.
She believes that every writer must learn to listen and think critically and be able to express themselves in a creative way. "The steps with which I view the writing process are: Reading, Expression, Critical Thinking (Brainstorming), Writing, and Revising."
Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Muncie Civic Theatre Masquerade Gala at Vera Mae's
Join the Muncie Civic Theatre for a Masquerade Gala on November 1st after the Jekyll and Hyde performance. The Masquerade Gala will take place at Vera Mae's at 10:00 pm after the end of the performance.

Through October 19 - Open Space: Art About the Land at Minnetrista, an art competition and exhibition which recognizes and encourages artists in East Central Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to help the Red-tail Conservancy.
October 28 through Dec. 6 - Muncie Ballet 6-week workshop, "Evil Elf" on Tuesdays from 4-5pm. The final creation will be used in The Children's Nutcracker. Dance or stage experience is not required.
Through October - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 22nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Gallery 308 Annual Wine Dinner & Art Auction with Advance Preview
Gallery 308 will host its 6th Annual Wine Dinner and Art Auction on Friday, November 21, at Vera Mae's Bistro. Something new has been added to this year's event: An advance preview of the items to be auctioned will be offered, beginning on First Thursday, November 6, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
In addition to the art that will be up for auction, the Gallery will once again sell bottles of wine exclusively bottled for the occasion by Grape Expectations in Carmel. The bottles are decorated with a unique one-of-a-kind "collectible" label designed by well-known local artist Jim Faulkner.
Proceeds from the art auction and sale of wine will again be divided between Gallery 308 and A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Fund). Event organizers hope to exceed the $6,000 that was raised at the event in 2007.
To give potential bidders a chance to preview the items to be auctioned, all art will be on display at the Gallery from the opening reception on November 6 through auction night, November 21. Admission to the reception is free and the public is invited. The Gallery is located at 308 East Main, Muncie.

News from the Downtown Farm Stand
The second annual All Beers Considered will be Sunday October 26th from 2-5 pm outdoors at the Fickle Peach at 117 E Charles St in downtown Muncie. This event will feature local beers paired with local farmstead cheeses from The Downtown Farm Stand. We're excited for this Octoberfest like event in the outdoors on a Sunday afternoon. This will be a great oppurtunity to taste all of the different cheeses from The Swiss Connection farm from Clay County Indiana. Last years event was a huge success, so reserve your spot today and tell them you heard about it from Dave Ring and The Downtown Farm Stand.

New Egg Supplier
We're proud to have a new quality egg supplier at The Downtown Farm Stand starting next week on October 24th. Sara, the kids and I visited the farm of Jonathon and Lucinda Gingerich near Kokomo, Indiana this last Sunday. Homestead Heritage is a beautiful farm with the poultry and cows all raised on grass and pasture. Their neighbor raises and grinds their feed for them all naturally (quality feed is very hard to find in Indiana). We look forward to them suppling us with plenty of eggs this year. Local quality pastured eggs have been in short supply, and I've been working steadily to find a good producer. We've finally found one and we're happy to have them aboard. Look for them on October 24th.
