An internationally recognized conservationist and Indiana-based musicians with international and national reputations will headline Muncie's second annual Living Lightly Fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at Minnetrista.
The Living Lightly Fair will offer hundreds of practical tips to homeowners, nature lovers, gardeners, parents, children, do-it-yourselfers and others interested in greener living, alternative energy, recycling and healthier environments. The fair organizers describe living lightly as learning how to use fewer resources and reduce costs as individuals and businesses.
The fair also will feature 17 presentations, a community leaders round table, three musical performances, a visiting artist, four stations of activities and workshops for children. A green marketplace of more than 45 vendors and exhibitors will showcase local and regional providers of sustainable living products and ideas.
Local organic and ethnic food will be served during the day-long event.
Four community leaders will share their accomplishments and visions for creating more sustainable lifestyles for area residents at a roundtable from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Round table panel members will be Sharon McShirley, mayor of Muncie; Sue Errington, a state senator; Terry Murphy, Muncie/Delaware County Chamber of Commerce; and Kevin Smith, the former mayor of Anderson.
Moderator for the panel will be Muncie City Council at-large member Linda Gregory. After panel members make a brief presentation, questions from the audience will be taken.
The keynote speaker will be Jerome Ringo, who is president of the Apollo Alliance and the first African-American to lead a major environmental group. The Apollo Alliance is a national coalition of business, labor and environmental and community leaders who are catalysts for adopting clean energies, cutting carbon emissions and reducing the country's dependence on foreign oil.
Ringo has taken the concerns of the alliance to more than 75 audiences, including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Conference of State Legislatures and the U.S. Green Building Council. He also appeared in Al Gore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth."
Ringo served as chairman of the board for the National Wildlife Federation from 2005-07 and remains on the NWF board as immediate former board chairman. He joined the NWF board in 1996. His reverence for the land started as a child in Southern Louisiana where he would fish, catch crabs and hunt for duck, goose and deer. Through his work with NWF, his major area of concern has been giving hope to the future of wildlife along Louisiana's coasts, in the Everglades and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Musicians Malcolm Dalglish and Carrie Newcomer will entertain fair goers. Both musicians are headquartered in Bloomington, Ind.
Dalglish is a hammer dulcimer player and a founding member of the folk/Celtic trio Metamora. His specialty is composing for choir. Children's choirs throughout the world have commissioned his folk-inspired music. He has recorded nine albums. He will perform from noon to 1 p.m.
Newcomer is a nationally known singer/songwriter who grew up in Elkhart, Ind. She got her start in the group Stone Soup, but as a solo artist she has produced 11 albums. Her styles include jazz, blues, folk and rock. Major media throughout the United States have recognized and praised her work. She will perform from 7-8:30 p.m.
Prior to Newcomer's performance, The Great Divide, a local musical group, will perform from 6 to 6:45 p.m.

Children and Youth Choir at Cornerstone
Join the Children's Choir or the Youth Choir now! Cornerstone Center for the Arts is now accepting registration for a Children's Choir for children in grades 3-5 and for a Youth Choir for children in grades 6-8.
Choir practice will begin Tuesday, September 16th and run weekly through the end of May. Under the direction of Dr. Christina Lamb, students will learn a variety of quality music in an educational setting. Students will practice for two community performances. The Children's Choir for 3rd to 5th grades will meet on Tuesdays from 5:00-6:15pm. The Youth Choir for 6th to 8th grades will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm.
All students are welcome! The fee is $140 for the year (September to May). A payment plan of $20 per month for seven months is also available. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Old Washington Street Festival This Weekend
Be a part of all the excitement and festivities during the Annual Old Washington Street Festival this weekend, September 13 & 14, 2008. The 32nd annual festival will be held on the four blocks of East Washington Street between Madison and Hackley Streets on Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
The primary focus of the Old Washington Street Festival is on the architectural, cultural, and social heritage of Muncie's Emily Kimbrough Historic District and the surrounding neighborhood. Home tours and a walking tour extend the bounds of the Festival to approximately fourteen square blocks.
At the hub of the Festival on Washington Street are demonstrations of crafts contemporary to the turn of the Emily Kimbrough Housecentury, arts and crafts displays, musical entertainment, an ice cream social and other refreshments, antiques, a milk wagon and a hand-drawn fire pumper to take visitors back to the gas boom era. We expect the variety of attractions to draw over 8,000 people.

Open Sundays 12- 5 pm! - Did you know that Sundays are the second busiest shopping day of the week? Neither did I until I read it recently. We had been debating for a while, but it's just became obvious that we needed to be open on Sundays. We look forward to filling your weekend needs for high quality local organic food. We need to be open as much as possible now because we want to generate income to open our commercial kitchen to have a deli and to begin to collect a much needed paycheck for our work here. Opening on the second busiest shopping day of the week is a good place to start to ramp up business.
Equipment - We are on the lookout for kitchen equipment for our deli. I have been an extremely lucky scrounger thus far and have been able to find almost all of our equipment for free. The tough economic times mean that a lot of businesses come and go, and so far we have been able to find a lot of things. We hope to continue to do so, so help us out with any tips that you have. Local Produce - It's that time of year when our shelves become more and more stocked with local food. We're enjoying local pears and apples, peppers and tomatoes, zucchini and okra, onions, garlic, and potatoes, and just about anything else that grows nearby. All of our producers are friends and neighbors, people we know and trust. Folks that raise food with respect for the environment and for the people eating it, and for the animals they raise. We hope you can take advantage of this local bounty and enjoy the many great foods available. As one of our customers put it, "It may be local food week around the country, but every week is local food week at The Downtown Farm Stand." Hey that's the idea, right?
Food For Thought - An Open Letter to the Delaware County Commissioners
Tuesday of this week I had this letter submitted for the record and Julie Alexander read it for me at the County Commissioners meeting since I had to work at the store. It says some things I thought you all might be interested in:
Hello, I am Dave Ring, a resident of Delaware County, owner of Ring Family Farm, and owner of The Downtown Farm Stand in Muncie.
The Downtown Farm Stand is a grocery store that specializes in locally produced organic and sustainable food such as 100% grass fed meats and dairy products, pastured poultry, organic and local fruits and vegetables, local honey, grains, and hand crafted items. In a recent planing commission meeting Chairman David Howell suggested that there were no alternatives to Confined Animal Feeding Operations, industrial agriculture, and the subsequent poisoning of our environment. He suggested that to say otherwise would mean going back to the days of "Ma and Pa Kettle".
I would like to inform the commissioners that there is indeed a thriving alternative in Delaware County. With no assistance from any government entities and built only through the sheer demand of it's local citizens and the hard work and of it's producers, Delaware County now has the beginning of a local sustainable food system.
It is our goal to take advantage of the fastest growing segment of agriculture in the United States of America for the last 15 years - organic and sustainable farming. With our local industrial economy having long ago failed, we are dependent only on the existence of Ball State University - the saving grace of our community. With the national economy lagging in large part due to the increased expenses of natural resources, it is our belief that it is necessary to begin the production of our food closer to home in a sustainable method that uses far fewer petroleum products. There is no better time than now.
We can be a leader in the state of Indiana in sustainable agriculture. We can attract investment, put people to work, and rehabilitate our family farmsteads by putting families back onto the land. Sustainable organic farming is the perfect compliment to an education based community. High -value sustainable agriculture with many value added spin-off businesses is the key to building local economies.
The most important step in that process today is to make sure that this area remains viable for organic and sustainable agriculture by voting for a C.A.F.O. moratorium which would enable us to adhere to USDA guidelines in all parts of the county for organic agriculture. I implore you today to to think positively of our future and vote yes for a moratorium on new confined animal feeding operations in Delaware County.

Through September - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 2nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Upcoming Shows at The Living Room
Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the summer! We've been busy at The Living Room working on some new stuff and getting a lot of awesome shows booked!
A few quick things to mention before I talk about the shows for the weekend. First of all, tickets are now available online for all shows!! Young Professionals: What matters to you?
Muncie Young Professionals Group (MYPG) is conducting a survey of young professionals in Muncie. This survey measures the impact that young professionals are having on our community, and prioritizes the issues that matter most to us.

Rockers for Knockers at Center Stage Sept. 12
Center Stage will be hosting a benefit show, Friday, Sept. 12 called Rockers For Knockers. All proceeds will go to the cancer center to pay for mammograms that some women cannot afford.
The show starts at 6pm and will feature Hit-n-Run, Missing Mercer, Mud Eye Joe, Mike Milligan and Steam Shovel, and Waylon T. & the Blues Bus. This is an all ages show with kids 12 and under getting in for free.

Come Downtown for the First Thursday Gallery Walk Sept. 4
Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, September 4th, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries launch their monthly exhibits on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.
This month FB Fogg will relaunch following their recent remodeling, with an open house scheduled during the Sept 4th gallery walk during First Thursday.

The Artist Within will feature the watercolors of Cindy Turner during September. There will be an opening reception First Thursday September 4th from 5-8pm. Her show will remain up through Sept. 27, 2008.
As an art major at BSU in the 1970's, she took a required Color class and it changed her way of looking at color forever. Until then, she had never really given much thought to color. She took it for granted like many other people do. This artist never knew to look beyond the crayon box to see that shadows are rarely ever just plain black.
Suddenly she noticed that a brick house under an orange tinted streetlight isn't brick red at all, but instead, it is a really neat shade of purple. Cindy says, "We are taught as children that black is black and then wonder at the many cool and warm shades of black at the paint store!"
She has taken this love of color and paired it with her beginning attempts at watercolor to create her first one woman show that is aptly titled Water + COLOR. Cindy goes on to say, "I have always loved watercolor paintings, but until I started doing paintings of my own, I never knew that I could pair my love and my bold use of color with a medium that is usually handled in a more delicate way. I love the results and hope that those who see my paintings will love them too!"
Cindy earned a BS degree in Visual Communications from Ball State University in 1979, but has spent much of her adult life working for University Libraries at Ball State. A Delaware County native, she has lived here most of my life. She did not dabble in the local art world until recently, but now that she has, she's hooked!
Cindy admits that she has always loved watercolor paintings and that she has purchased many books trying to teach herself to paint...with no success. According to Cindy, she is like many others who have tried and failed, always ending up with a very wet piece of paper with lots of runny brownish paint on it. In 2004 her husband gave her watercolor lessons for Christmas and in January of 2005, she took her first watercolor painting class from Brian Gordy. She took her second class with him that spring and would still be taking classes with him if he were still teaching. Cindy is quick to point out, "Brian is a wonderful watercolorist and a wonderful teacher and I feel very lucky to have learned what I have from him."
Brian Gordy encouraged Cindy and the others in the class to show their work and encouraged them to enter competitions.
Cindy has done this from the very beginning and considers it to have been a truly growing experience for her. Her paintings have been exhibited locally at Gordy's Fine Art Framing and at Minnetrista where she recently won an Award of Merit and the People's Choice Award. Cindy has also shown work at the Indiana State Fair. Originally she entered the non-professional division, but now has work in the professional category.

Twila Graber Beahm, a local Anderson, IN artist, will display her ceramics at ArtWorks Gallery from September 1st to the 30th. Twila graduated from Anderson University in 1992 with a BA in Fine Arts. She also studied ceramics under the instruction of Loran Hill, Bob Reiburg, Phil McLeod, Kim Anderson and John Peterson.
There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7:30 pm.
Twila was employed as a ceramic instructor for non-art majors at Anderson University from 1992 to 2002. She opened her Riverwalks Arts Studio and Gallery located on historical 8th Street in Anderson, IN in 2006. She also enjoys teaching classes in her studio. Twila comments, "I enjoy watching my students, who think they have no artistic ability, find that creative something that lets them express themselves in a new way".
Twila states, "Creating has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Working with clay lets me express my ideas and feelings best. I like to work with the clay and let it tell me what it wants me to do and then we create a new form together. Nature is where I get my inspiration and I love texture! Everywhere you look you have beautiful texture, the kind that you can hardly keep your hands from touching".
Twila uses pinch, coil and slab methods to create her pieces. However, her creativity utilizing these techniques is endless and her work gives insight into her views of social issues with a sense of humor. She recently finished a series: "Busting Out", which deals with women's issues of how they are viewed, abused and exploited through the ages because of their busts. Her "Busting Out" exhibit will be on display until September 5, 2008 at the Anderson Center For The Arts in Anderson, Indiana. Her exhibit at ArtWorks Gallery will include many of her functional pieces and sculptures such as mugs, platters, trays and will showcase her expertise in the manner in which she incorporates rich textural surfaces.

Blair Bowden's Exhibit, "Images and Words," has been extended through September 17 at cornerstone Center for the Arts.
Blair is currently a visual communications major at BSU with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Blair has lived in Kentucky, Indiana, and Japan. His work is often inspired by his travels and experiences with other cultures. Blair's pieces are a mixture of graphic design, photography, painting, ink, and other media.
The newly renovated Cornerstone Art Gallery is located on the second floor and will have a new show opening on the First Thursday of each month. The gallery exhibits and promotes the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Gallery 308 Opens a new exhibit, "Copyright Propaganda: Street Art" with an opening reception during First Thursday, September 4, from 5 to 8 p.m.
This exhibition features the work of two artists: Mike Boyd and Will Britton. The artists will be on hand at the opening and light refreshments will be served.
In a related event, on the third Thursday of September, Gallery 308's Living Arts Series presents "Art in a Democracy." A panel of local artists will discuss such questions as what can happen when artistic freedom and censorship collide. It will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 N. Bradford Drive in Muncie at 7 p.m. on September 18.

If Muncie held a "Most Recognized Artist" contest, Alan Patrick would certainly be a favorite candidate. His depictions of the wooded areas around Delaware County have graced local calendars and note cards, but more importantly, numerous public, private and museum collections around the country.
Known for his masterful brushwork of serene colors, Patrick provides viewers with a moment of calm - a beautiful walk in the woods, by a stream, under the cover of birch and elm, where one can almost hear the leaves crunch underfoot. Titled, "Heartland," the show delivers the sometimes forgotten soul of Indiana's countryside.
A gifted potter, Patrick ran the successful, "Bethel Pike Pottery" near Albany for several decades before retiring the wheel and kiln in lieu of the brush and canvas in 2006. Many of the pots the former art teacher created were glazed with intricate floral designs, a signature of its multi-talented creator.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing will be exhibiting new oil paintings by Patrick during the month of September at their downtown gallery. A reception for the artist will be held during the traditional First Thursday art event on September 4, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
"Alan is always a big draw as an exhibitor," gallery owner Brian Gordy offers. "His exceptional landscape paintings are some of the finest created in this era of Muncie art." Muncie Civic Theatre to Hold Auditions Sept. 6
Muncie Civic Theatre will be having an open call audition for actors of all ages on Saturday, September 6th. The shows being cast that day for the start of the 77th season are Jekyll and Hyde, Skin of Our Teeth, Sound of Music, Charlottes Web, and the locally produced holiday show, A Time for Christmas. Those interested in volunteering in design and crew positions should also attend to learn about the exciting opportunities this season.

The Cornerstone Arts Program is excited for its next series of twelve week classes, which start September 15th and continue until December 13th. The Arts Program offers classes for youth and adults in numerous areas of the arts.

"Art in a Democracy" - A Public Forum Sponsored by Gallery 308
What are the acceptable boundaries of artistic expression? Just how far can the artist push the envelope before society pushes back?
On Thursday September 18 at 7 p.m., Gallery 308 presents "Art in a Democracy," part of the Gallery's monthly Living Arts Series. This program is a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Patsy Donn, and will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 West Bradford, Muncie. The panel includes local artists, art historians and educators such as Mark Sawrie, Lucinda Rarick, Jim Faulkner, Bill Inman and Juli Eflin.
The panelists are prepared to discuss specific issues related to artistic freedom, such as: Does it matter where the artist expresses him- or herself? For instance, how can non-mainstream art magazines advertise the so-called Jesus dolls that "walk on water" (and be met with silence) and yet the "Chocolate Jesus" show is attacked by protesters? These and other matters often fuel our passions and raise questions as to how much our society will accept when it comes to artistic freedom.
Freedom of expression - whether it's in the theater, the art gallery, or the classroom, whether it's through the visual arts, the written or the spoken word - is highly valued by Americans. It is hoped that this discussion will bring all points of view to the table. Admission to the event is free.

Bring your grandparents to September's Friends and Family Fun Night at the Muncie Children's Museum on Friday, September 5, from 3 - 7 p.m., to celebrate National Grandparent's Day! Admission is free.
National Grandparent's Day was nationally instituted in 1978, and it has been celebrated every year since then on first Sunday after Labor Day! Grandparents, parents and children should visit the MCM to construct a family tree, create cards for grandparents, make handprint art and interview grandparents to get to know them better!

"My Name Is Jerry" Update
My Name is Jerry is now is post-production, and we'd like to introduce you to our lead editor, Jess Carfield. Jess graduated from BSU in 2003 and moved to England to attend the London Film School where he received an MFA with an emphasis on cinematography and editing. Since then he has been working as a freelance editor and photographer mostly in the music world with such bands as the Smashing Pumpkins, Motley Crue, and Slipknot.He is currently working on a rough assembly of the piece, and is on scenes in the 60s out of a total of 100, and so far he said that he "can see a team effort in the footage and is very impressed at how well the crew worked together".
As we have mentioned before, there is a LOT of material that was collected during filming that couldn't be immediately released, including a couple photos taken during scenes with Catherine Hicks, who plays Dana Holderman. Check them out here.
Hicks was in Muncie for one evening to film her scenes as Dana, an HR rep for Daemtech, a company Jerry applies for a job at. The shoot, which lasted until around 3 AM, was understandably time-crunched, but we managed to steal Hicks from the crew for a few minutes to talk with her about her role. Take a look!

Painter Patrick to Showcase "Heartland" at Gordy's
If Muncie held a "Most Recognized Artist" contest, Alan Patrick would certainly be a favorite candidate. His depictions of the wooded areas around Delaware County have graced local calendars and note cards, but more importantly, numerous public, private and museum collections around the country. Known for his masterful brushwork of serene colors, Patrick provides viewers with a moment of calm - a beautiful walk in the woods, by a stream, under the cover of birch and elm, where one can almost hear the leaves crunch underfoot. Titled, "Heartland," the show delivers the sometimes forgotten soul of Indiana's countryside.
A gifted potter, Patrick ran the successful, "Bethel Pike Pottery" near Albany for several decades before retiring the wheel and kiln in lieu of the brush and canvas in 2006. Many of the pots the former art teacher created were glazed with intricate floral designs, a signature of its multi-talented creator.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing will be exhibiting new oil paintings by Patrick during the month of September at their downtown gallery. A reception for the artist will be held during the traditional First Thursday art event on September 4, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
"Alan is always a big draw as an exhibitor," gallery owner Brian Gordy offers. "His exceptional landscape paintings are some of the finest created in this era of Muncie art." Gordy expects many visitors throughout the month. "Collectors have a great interest in the works of Alan Patrick, and we're happy to oblige their appetites for his work."

Water + COLOR Exhibit by Cindy Turner at The Artist Within
The Artist Within will feature the watercolors of Cindy Turner during September. There will be an opening reception First Thursday September 4th from 5-8pm. Her show will remain up through Sept. 27, 2008.People often ask the rhetorical question....if you were to suddenly go blind, what would you miss most? Without any hesitation, Cindy Turner would answer that after the faces of her family, it would be color and its many shades, hues and intensities.
As an art major at BSU in the 1970's, she took a required Color class and it changed her way of looking at color forever. Until then, she had never really given much thought to color. She took it for granted like many other people do. This artist never knew to look beyond the crayon box to see that shadows are rarely ever just plain black.
Suddenly she noticed that a brick house under an orange tinted streetlight isn't brick red at all, but instead, it is a really neat shade of purple. Cindy says, "We are taught as children that black is black and then wonder at the many cool and warm shades of black at the paint store!"
She has taken this love of color and paired it with her beginning attempts at watercolor to create her first one woman show that is aptly titled Water + COLOR. Cindy goes on to say, "I have always loved watercolor paintings, but until I started doing paintings of my own, I never knew that I could pair my love and my bold use of color with a medium that is usually handled in a more delicate way. I love the results and hope that those who see my paintings will love them too!"
Cindy earned a BS degree in Visual Communications from Ball State University in 1979, but has spent much of her adult life working for University Libraries at Ball State. A Delaware County native, she has lived here most of my life. She did not dabble in the local art world until recently, but now that she has, she's hooked!
Cindy admits that she has always loved watercolor paintings and that she has purchased many books trying to teach herself to paint...with no success. According to Cindy, she is like many others who have tried and failed, always ending up with a very wet piece of paper with lots of runny brownish paint on it. In 2004 her husband gave her watercolor lessons for Christmas and in January of 2005, she took her first watercolor painting class from Brian Gordy. She took her second class with him that spring and would still be taking classes with him if he were still teaching. Cindy is quick to point out, "Brian is a wonderful watercolorist and a wonderful teacher and I feel very lucky to have learned what I have from him."
Brian Gordy encouraged Cindy and the others in the class to show their work and encouraged them to enter competitions.
Cindy has done this from the very beginning and considers it to have been a truly growing experience for her. Her paintings have been exhibited locally at Gordy's Fine Art Framing and at Minnetrista where she recently won an Award of Merit and the People's Choice Award. Cindy has also shown work at the Indiana State Fair. Originally she entered the non-professioanl division, but now has work in the professional category.

A Natural Touch for Textured Surfaces: Twila Graber Beahm at Artworks
Twila Graber Beahm, a local Anderson, IN artist, will display her ceramics at ArtWorks Gallery from September 1st to the 30th. Twila graduated from Anderson University in 1992 with a BA in Fine Arts. She also studied ceramics under the instruction of Loran Hill, Bob Reiburg, Phil McLeod, Kim Anderson and John Peterson.There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7:30 pm.
Twila was employed as a ceramic instructor for non-art majors at Anderson University from 1992 to 2002. She opened her Riverwalks Arts Studio and Gallery located on historical 8th Street in Anderson, IN in 2006. She also enjoys teaching classes in her studio. Twila comments, "I enjoy watching my students, who think they have no artistic ability, find that creative something that lets them express themselves in a new way".
Twila states, "Creating has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Working with clay lets me express my ideas and feelings best. I like to work with the clay and let it tell me what it wants me to do and then we create a new form together. Nature is where I get my inspiration and I love texture! Everywhere you look you have beautiful texture, the kind that you can hardly keep your hands from touching".
Twila uses pinch, coil and slab methods to create her pieces. However, her creativity utilizing these techniques is endless and her work gives insight into her views of social issues with a sense of humor. She recently finished a series: "Busting Out", which deals with women's issues of how they are viewed, abused and exploited through the ages because of their busts. Her "Busting Out" exhibit will be on display until September 5, 2008 at the Anderson Center For The Arts in Anderson, Indiana. Her exhibit at ArtWorks Gallery will include many of her functional pieces and sculptures such as mugs, platters, trays and will showcase her expertise in the manner in which she incorporates rich textural surfaces.
ArtWorks Gallery's Mission: as a non-profit cooperative artist gallery, our mission is to serve the Muncie community, provide local artists a facility to exhibit their art and to provide educational opportunities and affordable art to our community.

Upcoming Events at Cornerstone Center for the Arts
Join Cornerstone as we celebrate our summer classes! The second annual Cornerstone Carnival will be held on August 10th, 2:00-5:00pm.
All classes and lessons will be showcased through performances, visual arts exhibits, multimedia, and a private lessons recital. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for fall classes.

Registration for Cornerstone's fall classes begins Sunday, August 10th at the Cornerstone Carnival. Fall classes begin Monday, September 15th. We will be offering several of the same classes, as well as some new and exciting options!

Cornerstone Art Gallery
Blair Bowden, a current Ball State University student, will have his art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from August 7th to September 2nd. The show is titled Images and Words featuring 20 pieces of his recent work.
The piece pictured in the article is entitled "Cubism Study" is a mixed media piece of newspaper and oil paint on wood. Blair's pieces are a mixture of graphic design, photography, painting, ink, and other media.
Blair is currently a visual communications major at BSU with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Blair has lived in Kentucky, Indiana, and Japan. His work is often inspired by his travels and experiences with other cultures.
This is the second show in the newly renovated Cornerstone Gallery. The gallery is located on the second floor of our building. The gallery will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Children's and Youth Choirs
Beginning Tuesday, September 16th, Cornerstone will be offering a Children's Choir for children in grades 3rd-5th and a Youth Choir for children in grades 6th-8th. Both choirs will meet weekly from September through the end of May.
Under the direction of Dr. Christina Lamb, the choirs will prepare for two community concerts. Dr. Lamb will provide quality music selections in an educational setting as your child learns the dynamics of working in a choral group.
Dues for the choir are $140.00 for the year. A payment plan of $20.00 per month for 7 months is also an option. Dues for siblings are $100 per year. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Educational Workshops
Cornerstone's educational workshops are ideal for team building, socializing, doing something creative, or just having fun.
Workshops are available for youth groups, retirement parties, office retreats, school groups, and more. In the past we have hosted workshops for groups such as Muncie Young Professionals Group, Ball State University, youth groups, Taylor University, and many more.
Workshops are available in several areas of the arts, including: jewelry making, line dancing, acting, American Sign Language, ballroom dancing, drawing, ceramics, painting, drawing, and more.
The workshops are priced at $5.00 a person or $7.00 per person if the workshop includes supplies.

Go Gallery Hopping at First Thursday in Downtown Muncie
Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, August 7th, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries launch their monthly exhibits on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.
The following exhibits will be opening (in alphabetical order by gallery) at the next First Thursday:
The Artist Within ~ 313 S Walnut Street ~ 765-289-7895
"Friends and Family" is an exhibition of some of the artwork the Artist Within owners Bob and Vicki Hartley have collected over the years. During his years as an art teacher, Bob was frequently asked how he became interested in art. His answer was simply stated, "I grew up with it. The walls of our home were covered with art and my mother and siblings were always doing artwork of some sort. We were encouraged to explore art and were taken to galleries at an early age."
August's exhibit will feature a look at some of the artwork that the Hartleys have "grown up with". An opening reception will be held Thursday August 7th from 5-8 pm and the show will remain up through August 30th.

"Resonating Bio-forms" by Thurman Grantham will be on exhibit at ArtWorks through August. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday Downtown from 5 to 8pm.
Additionally, Carol Cheney will be giving portrait demonstrations at the ArtWorks Art Gallery on First Thursday, August 7, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Carol is a painter and local artist/educator. Her watercolor and oil paintings will be on display at ArtWorks Gallery for the month of August.
ArtWorks Gallery will be presenting artist demonstrations within the gallery once a month on First Thursdays. These demonstrations are free to the public.
Thurman Grantham's surrealistic flora and fauna are out of this world and truly exotic. Grantham's media of choice is auto-body plastic and layers of crystal-based paints and clear coat. He often includes insects hidden within the foliage. His first six sculptures were created over a six-year span.
Grantham is a native of Albany, Indiana and is a graduate of Delta High School. His occupation is a paint restoration specialist at Muncie Imports and Classics. The media he uses to restore rust eaten Jaquars is also used to create his sculptures. Grantham is considered by definition as an "Outsider Artist". This term is often used to define a group of artists who have not had formal art instruction. Grantham relies on his creative imagination and his innate artistic sense of design, color and composition to fabricate his creations.
Grantham is 52 and soft spoken. He states "I have been an artist all my life". Art just comes naturally to him and when he was a youngster he dabbled in watercolors. His older brother is a professional artist in Chicago. Grantham started using auto-body plastic and paints in 2002 when two of his buddies complained about not having the money to buy their wives flowers for Valentine's Day. Grantham replies: "We'll just make them". He made one for his wife as well. According to his wife of 27 years, Marilyn "You never know what he is going to come up with next"!

Blue Bottle coffee shop on Walnut St. will showcase the artwork of Kelly Hudson in August. Kelly is a Muncie resident and graduate of Ball State University. There will be a meet-the-artist reception during First Thursday from 5 to 8pm.

Young artists from Clay Camp will have their work on display at Gallery 308 the first two weeks of August. The exhibit will include work created by children in summer art camps at the Art Mart and the Artist Within. An opening reception to meet the young artists will be held Thursday August 7th from 5-8 pm.

Overstuffed closets can be a beautiful thing, especially when the stuffing is in the form of luscious oil paintings, hand-thrown pottery, crisp watercolors, and hand-pulled prints. Gallery owners, Brian and Genny Gordy, have decided to thin out the works left in their care by offering the first comprehensive art sale at their downtown shop.
Included in the exhibit/sale will be many recognizable names - Alan Patrick, Jim Faulkner, Margie Prim, David and Sarojini Johnson, Bill Zack, Shonet Martin, Eric Ernstberger, Martha Gilliom, Jerry Henning, Sally Myers, Carol Burt, the Gordy's, and others. "Artists love to sell their work. Galleries love to sell artists' work. Art patrons and collectors love to have beautiful things for their homes," offered son, Ben, a framer and burgeoning art collector. "Of course, we also love to put beautiful frames on that art whenever we can."
The Gordy gallery wall will be filled with dozens of pieces, salon-style, throughout August. As objects sell, they will be replaced with other pieces, also on sale. The public is invited to attend the First Thursday opening on August 7th, from 5 to 8 PM, where light refreshments will be served. The exhibit may also be viewed during normal business hours, Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment.
