Weekly Downtown E-News 8/28/08

The Muncie Downtown Business Council wishes to thank the Ball State Daily News for their wonderful representation of Downtown Muncie in last Thursday's Roll Call edition. Many downtown businesses were featured with a photo and a paragraph. The Downtown student discount postcards are currently being distributed among the returning students; if your business has offered a BSU discount, we will be giving you signs to put in your windows. If you did not make it onto the postcard, you can still be included in the discount list online - email your business name, address and discount to info AT munciedowntown DOT com.

Downtown Muncie will have a float in the BSU Homecoming parade on Sept. 27! We need volunteers to help build the float, as well as to help walk the parade. Email info AT munciedowntown DOT com ASAP if you are able to help out with either or both. Red and white Downtown t-shirts (required for the parade) are being printed, and are available to parade walkers for $10 each. Anyone is welcome buy or order a t-shirt to support Downtown Muncie! Monday, Sept. 1 is the last day for bands to enter for a performance slot in the 2nd Annual Muncie Music Fest in Downtown Muncie Saturday, Oct. 4 from 6 p.m. - 1 a.m. All ages and musical genres are welcome to apply. First Thursday is Sept. 4, the time when all our art galleries in Downtown Muncie launch their monthly exhibits with meet-the artist opening receptions and extended hours from 5 to 8pm. Read more...

AUGUST EVENTS

August 28 - The final Summer Storytime at Muncie Children's Museum in the Book Nook, at 1:00 pm. Included with admission. Pre-registration is not required.

August 28th - Wildlife Solutions at Minnetrista, 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. This seminar will teach you to diagnose and identify garden intruders and discuss prevention techniques. Registration deadline Aug. 25.

August 29th- Freaky Tiki Friday food, drink and live music from Ruined for Life. Starts at 5pm in the parking lot next to the Blue Bottle.

August 29th - Free Friday Night Movie - "The Game Plan" begins at dusk in the 400 block of South Walnut Street.

August 30th - Glass Bead Minne-trip, 8: 00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (Lunch will be provided) Join us as we travel to Inspired Fire Glass Studio & Gallery in Lafayette, Indiana. Experience flame-working techniques firsthand, create glass beads to take home, and learn the basics of creating a small glass sculpture. Registration deadline Aug. 25.

August 30th - Farmers Market Cooking Demonstration Saturday, August 30, 9:00 a.m. at Minnetrista. Enjoy this FREE cooking demonstration featuring chefs from the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation. All demonstrations include locally grown ingredients found at Farmers Market.

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

Through Sept. 2 - Blair Bowden, a current Ball State University student, will exhibit his artwork, "Images and Words," in the Cornerstone Gallery from August 7th to September 2nd. The show is titled Images and Words featuring 20 pieces of his recent work.

September 5 - Bring your grandparents to September's Friends and Family Fun Night at the Muncie Children's Museum on Friday, September 5, from 3-7 p.m., to celebrate National Grandparent's Day! Admission is free.

Jeff Frame, Manager of the Biomechanics lab at Motion Analysis, explains proper bike fit and gives tips on proper running and walking shoe fit. Beginning Tuesday, September 16th, Cornerstone will be offering a Children's Choir for children in grades 3rd-5th and a Youth Choir for children in grades 6th-8th. Visit www.cornerstonearts.org for details.

Through September - The Artist Within will feature the watercolors of Cindy Turner during September. There will be an opening reception First Thursday September 4th from 5-8pm. Her show will remain up through Sept. 27, 2008.

Through September - Twila Graber Beahm, a local Anderson, IN artist, will display her ceramics at ArtWorks Gallery from September 1st to the 30th. There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7:30 pm.

Through September - Painter Alan Patrick will showcase his oil paintings in a new exhibit entitled "Heartland" at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. A reception for the artist will be held during the traditional First Thursday art event on September 4, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Through September - Sarah LaBarge, a current Ball State University student, will have her art work on display in the Cornerstone Gallery from September 2nd to October 31st. The show is titled Sarah LaBarge: Figures and New Work and features 18 pieces of her recent work.

Through October - Minnetrista Farmers Market meets every Wednesday evening from 4pm until sold out, and every Saturday morning from 8am to noon. Featuring vegetables, fruits, flowers, eggs, honey, baked goods, meat, cheese and much more.

Every Monday - Jazz at the Fickle Peach features Ralph Johnson on drums, Paul Rhine on double-bass and flute, and Phil Cooley on Piano. They perform every Monday night from 9 to 11.

LOOKING AHEAD...

October 2 - October's First Thursday is a special all-inclusive arts event we call "ArtsWalk." It is our biggest gallery walk of the year, held in conjunction with Ball State University. Featuring special events all over downtown, free shuttles to and from BSU, demonstrations, food, music in the streets and more.

October 4 - Muncie Music Fest returns for a second year to the streets of Downtown Muncie. This is an all ages gated event. Stay tuned to munciedowntown.com and munciemusicfest.com for details.

October 10-12; 16-18 - Forbidden Broadway at Main Street Studio Theatre. All Studio shows are for a mature audience and begin at 8:00pm Thursday-Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday. For tickets or info call 765.288.PLAY
