Meet the Artists at First Thursday Downtown

Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie for extended hours this First Thursday, March 6th, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries spotlight their exhibit openings on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.

Some of the gallery events (in alphabetical order by gallery) at the next First Thursday:

The Artist Within ~ 313 S Walnut Street ~ 765-289-7895

March at the Artist Within will feature paintings by Lynnsy Terrill. Although Lynnsy was born and raised in Fort Wayne, she now calls Muncie home. After coming to Muncie to attend Ball State University in 1991 and graduating from there in 1995, she has settled in and never left this area.

She is very active in the live art weekends at Muncie Alliance Church and frequently paints at the Friday Night Cafe's that are held there. She feels that this is a great way to expose the community to the arts and people seem to enjoy watching her paint and following the progress of her work.

Lynnsy believes that everyone has a story to tell and her paintings are her way of documenting her spiritual journey in life. "Documenting my life is important to me and sometimes I feel like my paintings are like having my journal entries all over the walls", states this young artist. She works primarily with oils, acrylics and collage and "Veritas in Color" (Truth in Color) is an exhibit of her recent works.

Her exhibit will be held March 4-29, 2008 with an opening reception, that is free and open to the public, from 5-8pm on Thursday, March 6.

Lynnsy Terrill has displayed her work in Indianapolis and locally at Danner's Bookstore, Mitchell Place Gallery, Muncie Alliance Church, Pathologists Associated and has had work in the consignment shop at the Artist Within.

Gallery 308 ~ 308 E. Main Street ~ 765-289-8575

Gallery 308 will exhibit "Ben Bates and Ted Neal: New Ceramics Work." The opening reception for the pair's new exhibit is First Thursday, March 6 at 308 East Main in downtown Muncie. Admission is free; refreshments will be served.

Between them they have a wealth of experience-and a wealth of talent. Neal is an assistant professor of art at Ball State; Bates is a Ceramics Studio Artist living in Libertyville, Illinois and a ceramics instructor at the College of Lake County (Illinois).

Neal enjoys working in a dichotomy of styles. He is currently exploring both utility and sculpture within the realm of the clay vessel. Themes that dominate his sculptural work are the "proliferation of mass-produced industrial objects, the modern need for portability, and the veneration of the commonplace." He is especially interested in objects that are discarded or have disappeared into the background-objects that have gone from useful to garbage and sometimes back again.

Bates is interested in the functional format as a realm of exploration but strives to transcend the utilitarian boundaries and function as sculptural elements. He uses the ideals of the vessel to clarify design and explore form as it relates to space. "To me, working in clay is more about composition, proportion and surface than it is about efficiency of use."

Gordy Fine Art & Framing ~ 224 E Main Street ~ 765-284-8422

Winchester resident Robert Farlow, well-known sculptor and oil painter, will exhibit his paintings at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in March. The artist will be on hand for a reception during the First Thursday event, from 5 to 8 PM on March 6th. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Initially a teacher, Farlow has been a professional artist for over fifty years. He continues to paint and exhibit regularly, and has won numerous awards throughout Indiana. He was one of the featured artists in the book, Painting Indiana II, produced by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and the Center for Agricultural Science & Heritage.

Plein air painters differ from studio painters in that that they paint on the site of the scene they're depicting. Plein air artists may do sketches and studies outside and return to their studios to complete the works, but it is this initial work out-of-doors that qualifies their standard.
