Randle P. McMurphy is a charming rogue who contrives to serve a short sentence in a mental institution rather than in prison. This, he learns, was a mistake when he clashes with the domineering head of the ward, Nurse Ratched.

McMurphy becomes a hero to all the pscychopaths and mental cases through his antics and zeal for life. He leads others out of introversion, stages a revolt, arranges a midnight party with some local ladies, and changes the face of the ward forever. However, Nurse Ratched makes certain that McMurphy is also changed forever as his reward.
