Historic Farmland USA, a nationally-recognized non-profit Main Street Program and community enrichment group in Randolph County, has hired Darrin Murrell as Managing Director to oversee and guide all aspects of the organization. Among the goals and objectives set forth by Murrell are increased grant writing and fundraising, the development of a long-range business plan, working with local professionals to attract more patronage to the historic downtown business district and the development of more and diverse cultural and entertainment activities for presentation at the Farmland Cultural Center, a building owned and operated by Historic Farmland USA. Farmland is an historic agricultural community located at the junction of Indiana Highways 1 & 32 in western Randolph County and is home to popular destinations including The Chocolate Moose Soda Fountain & Restaurant, The Main Street Coffee Company, One Fun Farm and Tanglevine Crossing Gifts.
Among the first projects planned by Murrell are a studio of after-school arts classes to begin in the fall, a Harvest Festival in October, a concert series and a professional dinner theatre project set to open in late summer and continue throughout the year. Murrell will also be entering Historic Farmland for consideration of funding through the Great American Main Street Awards, the Downtown Enhancement Grant offered by the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs and Indiana Main Street., and the new Indiana Artisan Development Project recently announced by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. Additionally, Murrell will oversee annual events including Chili Cook Off, Fright in Farmland and Holiday Evening, develop and manage annual budgets, lead an annual membership campaign, develop and implement cooperative town-wide advertising campaigns, write and distribute monthly newsletters, and develop new grant funding opportunities throughout the year.
Historic Farmland USA was founded in 1992 as an Indiana Main Street organization and has achieved national recognition for its downtown revitalization efforts, historic preservation projects and community cultural enrichment activities. Through the work of Historic Farmland USA, the town of Farmland is now on the National Register of Historic Places and has received more than one million dollars in grant funding for historic renovation and preservation. The revitalized downtown commercial district now hosts a number of unique shops and restaurants as well as the Farmland Cultural Center. Opened by Historic Farmland USA in 2000, the Farmland Cultural Center offers music and theatre performances, holiday brunches and dinners, private parties and art classes as well as revolving art exhibits featuring local, regional and national artists. Historic Farmland USA has also gained attention for annual events such as the Holiday Evening and Fright In Farmland as well as founding board member Larry Francer's movie projects "Fright In Farmland," "It Happened In Farmland" and "Courthouse Girls of Farmland." "Courthouse Girls of Farmland" a documentary which recently won a top award at the 2008 Breckinridge Film Festival and gained entry to the 2008 DC Independent Film Festival, details the creation of The Courthouse Girls Calendar which gained national notoriety for featuring pictures of nearly-nude older women in a successful attempt to shed light on efforts to save the historic Randolph County courthouse in Winchester.
Darrin Murrell, former Executive Director of Muncie Civic Theatre and Anderson's Paramount Theatre, previously sat on the Board of Directors for Historic Farmland USA and recently completed a term as Board President. He is currently serving a term as President of the Indiana Community Theatre League and serves as Regional Representative to the National Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Theatres. Murrell is a resident of rural Parker City, a neighboring community to Farmland, where he and his family reside on the historic Murrell family homestead farm settled and built in 1850. He returned to his home community in 2003 after spending 20 years crossing the country as a professional actor, stage director and theatre producer. He continues to work as a freelance stage director, performer and educator, will direct two shows this year for Muncie Civic Theatre and leads the drama program at Monroe Central High School. His wife, Julie Barber, is a professional singer and teaches music at Taylor University as well as private voice and piano lessons. They have two children, Sofia and Sage, and have recently established their own artist management and booking company, Main Street Artists, which will be represented at the 2008 Mid-West Arts Conference in Kansas City.

This month The Artist Within will offer Heidi Hale's Basic Wire Jewelry class. This is a perfect "getaway evening" and gives you the skills to continue making wire jewelry on your own. Downtown Art Galleries Open New Exhibits at First Thursday July 3
Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, July 3rd, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries launch their monthly exhibits on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.

The Artist Within presents the photography of Brad Ayers in an encore exhibit opening First Thursday, July 3, and continuing through July. In the exhibit "Pushing Reality", Ayers combines his lifelong love of art and photograph by using the techniques of digital photography to blur the boundaries between the two.
A former middle-school teacher, who splits his time between Muncie and Florida, Ayers has exhibited in Muncie and in juried exhibitions in Florida at the Art Center Manatee and at Selby Gardens. Growing up surrounded by the architecture of his hometown Columbus, Indiana, and the paintings of his grandmother, a Brown County artist, he developed an interest and appreciation for art. The well-traveled Ayers shoots a wide range of subjects and is drawn to the colors, patterns, and images in both natural and urban scapes. His interests extend from vibrant colors to classic black and white.
Digital photography allows him to alter images similarly to the way film photographers do in photo labs. He enjoys pushing the reality of photography into the realm of fine art by enhancing digital images, extending them further from reality into impressionism and abstraction. His goal is to inspire the viewer to appreciate and to display photography as another form of fine art and to enjoy the experience.

"Woman As Vessel," a new exhibition by artist Kimberly Anderson, will be on display at Artworks through July 31st. An opening reception will be from 5 to 8pm during First Thursday July 3rd.
Kimberly Anderson was born in Evanston, IL and is now a resident of Hartford City, IN. Her mother is a therapist/social worker and her father is a college professor of science, which forged her fascination with science and the human psyche. These influences helped foster her sense of wonder which influenced artistic interests. Early in life, her parents moved to a 96 acre farm nestled in heavily wooded hills in rural Pennsylvania where she was to enjoy nature. They raised a menagerie that included horses, cows, pigs, ducks, rabbits, chickens, opossums, cats and dogs. These experiences with nature and animals are an important aspect of her personality and work.
Anderson holds three degrees focusing on ceramics and spent eight years in management. Her struggle to balance work and art left her unfulfilled. She decided to pursue her passion for art full-time. She began doing shows in 2001 and in April 2002 Milkweed Ceramics became her full-time career.
"Upon graduation I married my husband, Scott, who is also an artist". They relocated to Indiana and Scott accepted a position as assistant professor of art at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Anderson is still teaching in addition to participating in juried shows, solo exhibitions and traveling to art shows across the country to promote Milkweed Ceramics. The technical aspects of her work explore both functional and sculptural elements, using both high and low-fire materials.
Anderson states: "Human life unfolds in the fabric of time and history. My sculptures and functional ware are based on issues that surround the mysteries of existence and human origin. In my work I am addressing ideas that evoke a since of memory and human relations to and about the land. The work considers both personal and historical relationships to the environment. My sculptures and figurative vessels reference archeological excavations, feminine roles, cycles of renewal and decay, evolution vs. mythic beliefs, and relate to events in my personal history. I am exploring views and ideas that revel in life's mysteries and stir thoughts of becoming and being. I am influenced by two spheres of thought: the physical sciences and the human psyche. Science provides the facts and the psyche reveals mystery".
"My thrown and altered pottery is an ongoing investigation about woman as vessel. The fertility vessels quote Neolithic sources. I use a variety of firings to enhance interpretation. The ideas I am exploring are open ended. I am not searching for truth or exposure, but for a secret".

Gallery 308 will have its annual Members' Show in July, with an opening reception during First Thursday downtown, July 3rd.
Each July the nonprofit gallery has a celebratory exhibit in recognition of its members. Individuals who support the Gallery as "members" are invited to participate in the show by contributing as many as three pieces to be exhibited. The work shown is always representative of the many talented artists in our community who support the Gallery's mission.
The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments are provided. The 2008 Members' Show will be on view through the end of July.
Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Indiana Plein Air Painters Association exhibit continues through July at Gordy Fine Art & Framing.
The two-month exhibit features a dozen artists from across the state (and Kentucky!) who paint outside, on site. They are all part of the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association. She is currently turning her focus towards her artisitic talent and has established a new venture, "Art and Soul by Phoebe" and has approximately 80 canvases on display. These cover a variety of themes from Southwestern art to nudes done in acrylic. You can tell by her work that the "muse" has really taken her by storm, because she has accomplished all of these paintings since March 2008!

Faeries, Sprites & Lights at Minnetrista
Minnetrista will host Faeries, Sprites & Lights: "Faerie Jam," July 11-12 from 6 to 9 pm. This year the event will take guests on an enchanted trip into the lives of faeries through song, dance and interaction.
Join us as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Faerie Towne with the musical experience, "Faerie Jam."

Gallery 308 will have its annual Members' Show in July, with an opening reception during First Thursday downtown, July 3rd.
Each July the nonprofit gallery has a celebratory exhibit in recognition of its members. Individuals who support the Gallery as "members" are invited to participate in the show by contributing as many as three pieces to be exhibited. The work shown is always representative of the many talented artists in our community who support the Gallery's mission.

Brad Ayers Photography Exhibit "Pushing Reality" at The Artist Within
The Artist Within presents the photography of Brad Ayers in an encore exhibit opening First Thursday, July 3, and continuing through July. In the exhibit "Pushing Reality", Ayers combines his lifelong love of art and photograph by using the techniques of digital photography to blur the boundaries between the two.
A former middle-school teacher, who splits his time between Muncie and Florida, Ayers has exhibited in Muncie and in juried exhibitions in Florida at the Art Center Manatee and at Selby Gardens. Growing up surrounded by the architecture of his hometown Columbus, Indiana, and the paintings of his grandmother, a Brown County artist, he developed an interest and appreciation for art. The well-traveled Ayers shoots a wide range of subjects and is drawn to the colors, patterns, and images in both natural and urban scapes. His interests extend from vibrant colors to classic black and white.
Digital photography allows him to alter images similarly to the way film photographers do in photo labs. He enjoys pushing the reality of photography into the realm of fine art by enhancing digital images, extending them further from reality into impressionism and abstraction. "Woman as Vessel" Exhibit by Kimberly Anderson at Artworks
"Woman As Vessel," a new exhibition by artist Kimberly Anderson, will be on display at Artworks through July 31st. An opening reception will be from 5 to 8pm during First Thursday July 3rd.
Kimberly Anderson was born in Evanston, IL and is now a resident of Hartford City, IN. Her mother is a therapist/social worker and her father is a college professor of science, which forged her fascination with science and the human psyche. These influences helped foster her sense of wonder which influenced artistic interests. Early in life, her parents moved to a 96 acre farm nestled in heavily wooded hills in rural Pennsylvania where she was to enjoy nature. They raised a menagerie that included horses, cows, pigs, ducks, rabbits, chickens, opossums, cats and dogs. These experiences with nature and animals are an important aspect of her personality and work.
Anderson holds three degrees focusing on ceramics and spent eight years in management. Her struggle to balance work and art left her unfulfilled. She decided to pursue her passion for art full-time. She began doing shows in 2001 and in April 2002 Milkweed Ceramics became her full-time career.
"Upon graduation I married my husband, Scott, who is also an artist". They relocated to Indiana and Scott accepted a position as assistant professor of art at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Anderson is still teaching in addition to participating in juried shows, solo exhibitions and traveling to art shows across the country to promote Milkweed Ceramics. The technical aspects of her work explore both functional and sculptural elements, using both high and low-fire materials.
Anderson states: "Human life unfolds in the fabric of time and history. My sculptures and functional ware are based on issues that surround the mysteries of existence and human origin. In my work I am addressing ideas that evoke a since of memory and human relations to and about the land. The work considers both personal and historical relationships to the environment. My sculptures and figurative vessels reference archeological excavations, feminine roles, cycles of renewal and decay, evolution vs. mythic beliefs, and relate to events in my personal history. I am exploring views and ideas that revel in life's mysteries and stir thoughts of becoming and being. I am influenced by two spheres of thought: the physical sciences and the human psyche. Science provides the facts and the psyche reveals mystery".
"My thrown and altered pottery is an ongoing investigation about woman as vessel. The fertility vessels quote Neolithic sources. I use a variety of firings to enhance interpretation. The ideas I am exploring are open ended. I am not searching for truth or exposure, but for a secret".

Gallery 308 Members Show Call for Entries
Gallery 308 invites you to participate in the 4th Annual Members Show. This non-juried exhibit is your opportunity to share your artistic endeavors. Non-members, or those whose contributions are not updated for 2008, may enter by joining at the level of their choice. (The minimum membership contribution is $35 for an individual or $20 for student membership.)

Minnetrista Summer Stage Fest Kicks Off Saturday with Andy Griggs
Join us to kick-off Summer Stage Fest at Minnetrista with Country Music Star Andy Griggs, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. Griggs has found numerous successes since his first album was released in 1999. Griggs has graced the Billboard Country Charts with Top 10 hits such as, "You Won't Ever Be Lonely," "I'll Go Crazy," and "She's More." A close friend of the late Waylon Jennings, the two recorded a duet together on the same album; You Won't Ever Be Lonely, which was certified gold in 2000. Griggs is now with Montage Music Group, where he recently released The Good Life in May of 2008.
Admission is just $5 for adults 18 and over. Admission is free for children under the age of 18.

The meeting of the Downtown Business Council this week has been cancelled. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23rd, at 3pm in the Star Press building conference room. Mayor Sharon McShurley will address the group about future plans for Downtown Muncie.

The Neverbeens were formed in the winter of 2006, when Steve Ferrara and Tali Hersh, two established New York singer-songwriters, crossed paths at a Brooklyn open mic. Today, The Neverbeens are a 4 piece, Brooklyn based, inde band of multi-instrumentalist. A show of their's could possibly include guitar, piano, mandolin, trumpet, vocals, percussion, harmonica, electric bass and drums. A set will travel through sweet melodic whispers to a neurotic crashes of rhythm and soul. Their influences come from a variety of artists and musical styles some of which are Suzanne Vega, Bright Eyes, Joseph Arthur and Cat Power. When in their NYC home, The Neverbeens perform at various venues including: Mercury Lounge, Knitting Factory, Sidewalk Caf?, and Europa. They have also performed throughout Western Europe and North Eastern America. They released a self titled EP in February 2007. The Neverbeens are currently touring the US in support of their first full album Straightline released September 2007.

Today, The Neverbeens are a 4 piece, Brooklyn based, inde band of multi-instrumentalist. A show of their's could possibly include guitar, piano, mandolin, trumpet, vocals, percussion, harmonica, electric bass and drums. A set will travel through sweet melodic whispers to a neurotic crashes of rhythm and soul. Their influences come from a variety of artists and musical styles some of which are Suzanne Vega, Bright Eyes, Joseph Arthur and Cat Power. When in their NYC home, The Neverbeens perform at various venues including: Mercury Lounge, Knitting Factory, Sidewalk Caf?, and Europa. They have also performed throughout Western Europe and North Eastern America. They released a self titled EP in February 2007. The Neverbeens are currently touring the US in support of their first full album Straightline released September 2007.

Find organic and locally grown products from over 40 vendors at the Farmers Market at Minnetrista The market is open on Saturdays, 8 a.m. - noon; and Wednesdays, 4 - 6 p.m., from June through October.

Free Float for Father's Day at the Depot
Take Dad to the Depot and celebrate Father’s Day with free root beer floats for all. Stop by the Wysor Street Depot from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for your free float. While you are there learn about Depot history, check out our free cruiser bikes or just enjoy bonding time while strolling down the Greenway.

Cardinal Greenways Run for the Season 10K Run/5K Walk
Cardinal Greenway is hosting the 2nd Annual Run for the Season 10K Run/5K Walk on Saturday, June 14, 2008 with a start time of 7:30 a.m.
The event features a 10K competitive run and a non-competitive 5K walk. The entry fee is $15. Registration will be from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Entry forms may be downloaded from www.cardinalgreenways.org or picked up at the Wysor Street Depot, the YMCA or Kirk’s Bike Shop.
Awards will be given for the 10K competitive run for 1st place male & female, 2nd place male & female, 3rd place male & female. Awards will also be given in 12 additional age divisions for both male & female.
The course will start and finish at the Historic Wysor Street Depot and travel along the paved Cardinal Greenway and White River Greenway as well as on the roads and dirt trails through McCulloch Park. Timers will be at each mile. NO PETS ALLOWED!
We hope you will join us for an opportunity to improve your health and enjoy the beginning of Summer while you run the Greenway.
