Student Art Exhibit at Mitchell Place Gallery

Mitchell Place Gallery's Fourth Annual Juried Student Art Exhibit opens February
15 and runs through Feb. 24.
Opening reception is Thursday, Feb. 16, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Awards for grades K-5 are at 6:00, and those for grades 6-12 are at 7:00.
One hundred-seven works were entered for this
show by students from Muncie Community Schools, Delaware Community
Schools, Liberty-Perry Community Schools, Mt. Pleasant Township
Community Schools, as well as St. Lawrence School and Heritage Hall
Christian School.
Sixty-three works were chosen by juror Mary Carter,
Art Education faculty, B.S.U. Lovely art prizes have been donated by
Gordy Fine Art & Framing, The Artist Within, ArtMart, the College of
Architecture & Planning, B.S.U., Cornerstone Center For the Arts, Jack's
Camera, BSU Art professor Marilynn Derwenskus, and Mitchell Place
Gallery.
Costs for the show have been underwritten by a grant from
TrimMaster. MPG heartily thanks everyone for their generous support in
this endeavor!

Cornerstone Center for the Arts Accepting Applications for 401 (k)ids Arts Scholarships

Cornerstone Announces 401 (k)ids Arts Scholarship
Applications Due April 3

Cornerstone Center for the Arts announces the April 3 deadline to submit applications for the 401 (k)ids Arts Scholarship Program. The goal of this program is to provide full or partial scholarships to pay for arts lessons or classes for Delaware County students in 4th through 12th grade who want to pursue dance, music, theatre or visual arts. The scholarships are designed for children who would not otherwise be enrolled in the arts.

Applications will be reviewed by Cornerstone’s scholarship committee who will then interview potential recipients and select the scholarship winners. Deadline for applications is April 3, 2006 with recipients notified by June 1, 2006. The scholarships will be available beginning September 5, 2006 for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Applications will be available at Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main Street in Muncie. Office hours are Monday though Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Perform at Muncie Civic Theatre for Mardi Gras

MUNCIE CIVIC THEATRE, Delaware County's historic 75-year old arts leader, presents MOJO & THE BAYOU GYPSIES In Concert on Saturday, February 25 at 8:00pm. Tickets for the show are $20 for regular seating and $25 for premium seating in either the first 7 rows of the main section, or the Balcony 21-Club featuring a cash bar. Tickets are also available for a post-show entry into Muncie's Mardi Gras where the band will play an additional set for an additional $5. The one-night-only performance will be on the main stage at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street, Muncie, Indiana. Tickets are available by calling 765-288-PLAY or at the Box Office.

It's Mardi Gras and Muncie Civic is presenting the premiere cajun and zydeco band in the country. Audiences have said that "Mojo energy stands your hair on end!" The band delivers a thrilling crescendo of Cajun accordion, Fiddle and more. Suddenly the announcers voice exclaims "From the Looziana Bayous, where the alligators got soul and the good times roll, It's MOJO & the Bayou Gypsies!" Mojo's bayou journey begins - Down to Luzianne to visit the magic lady, Madame Magique, to parties, lovers, dancing, trail rides, deep meaning and memories, to a total MOJO BOOGIE in one of America's happiest nights of entertainment.

In addition to the performance at Muncie Civic, MOJO & THE BAYOU GYPSIES will be leading a parade down the street to Muncie's Downtown Mardi Gras to play an additional set on the Walnut Street stage. Anyone interested in adding a Mardi Gras entry pass to their concert ticket can do so for $5 (a discount from the $10 advance and $15 door price passes). This class represents a close working partnership between Muncie Civic and Downtown Development

Finally, students from Ball State's School of Music will be invited to engage in a conversation about the history of cajun and zydeco music with Mr. Mojo prior to the performance. This represents a partnership between Muncie Civic Theatre, Arts Midwest and Ball state University in an effort to provide BSU students and the Muncie community with unique learning opportunities in the Arts to enhance their educational experience in Muncie.

The Indian Creek Drawings at Gordy's in February

Alan Patrick: The Indian Creek Drawings

Alan Patrick will be the featured artist at Gordy Fine Art & Framing during the month of February. An avid conservationist, Patrick will donate a percentage of proceeds from sales to the Red-tail Conservancy. The local organization protects parcels of land from development, maintaining habitat and beautiful spaces for the future.

Titled, "The Indian Creek Drawings," the works showcase an important conservation easement in Madison County. "I go on work days and hikes with the Red-tail staff and volunteers. On these hikes I shoot photos from which I work in my studio." Formerly a potter, well-known for his Bethel Pike studio, Alan now focuses solely on painting and drawing. The suite of drawings for this exhibit is done in charcoal, adding a dramatic energy to the scenes of woods, creek beds and bluffs. "My purpose is to help preserve our last great places. As a landscape painter I am always in need of subject matter," explains Patrick. "Hopefully the sale of these works will help conserve more of our best open spaces."

A reception for the artist will be held during the First Thursday art event, February 2nd, from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown gallery/frame shop. The public is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

The month-long exhibit may also be seen during normal business hours: Monday - Thursday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Friday, 9 to 7, and Saturday, 9 to 5.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DOWNTOWN BUSINESS COUNCIL:

The Executive Committee of the Muncie Downtown Business Council is encouraging downtown businesses to jump into the massive lighting activities by outlining all first and second floor windows of their shops/offices with white lights.

Remember that Dec. 1st at 5 pm kicks off our holiday, with First Thursday at all the galleries to coincide with the lighting display (at 6 pm.)

We also encourage retailers to please extend their Friday night hours until Christmas to 8 pm. If we want to compete for shoppers, we can't invite them down to see the lights on closed shops! Consider advertising that you're extending these hours, and put a sign up on your door or window. Encourage your neighbors to participate, and encourage your friends to shop downtown this season!

Thank you all for each effort; they all add up to a healthy and vital downtown!

We are also encouraging those coming to support the Ball State Dietetic Association's "Poverty Christmas Aid" program. Bring a new toy and we'll waive your studio fee! BSU students are going on a mission trip to Carreta, West Virginia...one our countries poorest communities. They are also accepting
"gently used" clothes that can be dropped off at our studio. The group will help with home repairs and provide Christmas toys for the children. The Dietetics Association has already painted and sold over 200 coffee mugs for this project!

JENNIE DEVOE is an independent, Indianapolis, IN based, singer/songwriter on her own label -Rubin the Cat Music. Her soulful, funky, trip-hop style is unique only to herself. Jennie has been developing her own pop-style over the last several years by honing in her songwriting skills and blending her intelligent - sometimes heavy, sometimes humorous - lyrics with hippie-funk grooves. As Jennie makes her way into new markets - she leaves with the hearts of new fans. Jennie has been winning over audiences belonging to John Hiatt, Joe Cocker, Shawn Mullins, Susan Tedeschi, John Mayer, Lilith Fair goers and more. Jennie has sold nearly 20,000 cds of her releases, "Does She Walk on Water" and "Ta Da". She's done it the true grass roots way with fans attracted to something different and true spreading the word and bringing converts to each show. Jennie writes her own songs and sings with a sensual-gospel-tinged- honey-gravel-gigantic soul of a voice. She's earned three John Lennon Songwriting Contest Honorable Mentions, licensed her songs to major television shows and Corona Beer. Her song "How I Feel" is getting radio adds around the country with its infectious melody and bittersweet insight into both sides of a relationship on the. Although she gets compared to some of her favorite deep-thinking artists and passionate performers like Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Janis Joplin and Lucinda Williams, Jennie is carving out her own place in the hearts of today's listeners.

JANIS IAN is a legendary musical artist known for her ethereal vocals, poetic wordplay, and sublime melodies. Through more than three decades, Ian has managed to keep her music fresh and inspiring, always winning praise for her remarkable songwriting and tender voice. Raised on a farm in southern New Jersey, Ian's father and mother steeped her in classical and folk music, with a healthy dollop of jazz. She began playing the piano at age 2 ¬Ω, moving on to the guitar at 10, and writing her first song ("Hair of Spun Gold") at twelve. In 1966, at the age of 15, Ian's career exploded with the release of her controversial tale of teenage interracial love, "Society's Child". The self-penned song topped the charts and created a storm of controversy that featured Ian on The Tonight Show and in Life, Time and Newsweek. Her debut album, 1967's Janis Ian, earned Ian the first of nine Grammy nominations. Ian soared to new heights in the 1970s with her trio of masterpiece albums: Stars, Between the Lines, and Aftertones. Stars included the hit song "Jesse," which Roberta Flack made a pop standard. Between The Lines propelled Ian to superstardom with "At Seventeen." The single sold more than a million copies, and Ian was nominated for a then-unprecedented five Grammy awards, winning two. Aftertones proved to be one of the most critically acclaimed albums of its day, garnering Ian her first Japanese hit, "Love Is Blind", which stayed at #1 for an astonishing six months. Ian entered the '80s with the international disco hit "Fly Too High," a song featured on the soundtrack of the Jodie Foster movie Foxes. It began a successful string of projects for films (beginning with Four Rode Out in 1969, and The Bell Jar) and television (ABC Movie-of- the-Week Freedom, Murder She Wrote, The Simpsons, General Hospital, and Oz). Night Rains, the album containing "Fly Too High", also gave Ian #1 gold and platinum records in Australia, Holland, Africa, England, and a multitude of other countries. Ian was honored again by the Recording Academy in 1981 with a Best Vocal Duet nomination for her recording with Mel Torme of Ian's composition, "Silly Habits." In the early 80's, Ian took time off to study acting with Stella Adler, also studying ballet with Dora Krannig of the Royal Ballet. "They were both things that kept me involved in the arts, but gave me a break from my own work", she says now. Ian re-emerged in 1993 with Breaking Silence, which was nominated for a Grammy as Best Folk Album. Fearing the growing loss of artistic control by the major labels, she financed the album by taking a second mortgage on her home. Returning to recording with a vengeance, she released Revenge in 1995, Hunger in 1997, and God And The FBI in 2000. In 2003, Ian added author to her long list of accomplishments with the publication of her first book project, an anthology titled, Stars: Stories Based on the Lyrics of Janis Ian. Ian then released the double live CD Working Without A Net, a collection of performances she has been recording since 1990. "We started taping the shows just for archival purposes," Ian says. "but the fans have been asking for a live record for decades. For fans that live in Poland, Korea, and other places we don't tour, this is a chance to hear a live show. For fans that have seen the show, it's a chance to take back something that's pretty close to a memory of that show and recreate the feeling." Astonishingly for a live CD, the album went on to receive a four-star rating in Q Magazine. The release of her 18th studio album, Billie's Bones, is the latest achievement in Ian's remarkable career.
