Local Studio Owner Participates in 9/11 Memorial

PRESS RELEASE:
LOCAL STUDIO OWNER PARTICIPATES IN NEW YORK MEMORIAL TO SEPTEMBER 11th.

Bob and Vicki Hartley, owners of "the Artist Within", a Paint Your Own Pottery studio in Downtown Muncie, are proud to be participants in TILES FOR AMERICA, one of only two spontaneous memorials left to the events of 9/11 and located in New York City. The Hartleys were moved to participate after receiving a call to action from the Contemporary Ceramics Studio Association-an organization that bonds studio owners across the country. The CCSA informed Bob and Vicki and other owners of recent vandalism to the memorial and the loss of several hundred of the thousands of tiles that comprise the memorial.

"Although the five year anniversary is fast approaching," says Bob, "the feelings connected with the events of that day remain quite compelling and fresh. It's always been "the Artist Within"'s philosophy that painting pottery is better than therapy; it was a relief to express some of my emotions about the tragedy and to honor its victims." The Hartley's created several tiles that will serve to accomplish the organizer's mission: to make sure that each victim is represented on the memorial as they were at its inception. An additional tile showcases our city and state's participation in this Nationwide effort.

These tiles will be sent to NYC to become part of the memorial. For more info, please contact Bob Hartley at: tawmuncie313@sbcglobal.net

September at The Artist Within

September at the Artist Within:

The Artist Within kicks off the “school year” with a printmaking exhibit,
"A Study of the Figure", featuring the artwork of Hannah Birch. Her show opening reception is Thursday, September 7th from 5-8 pm. Hannah is a native of Windsor, Vermont with a BFA from SUNY Fredonia, New York. As a graduate assistant for the Printmaking Department at Ball State University, she has continued her exploration of the figure using intaglio printing techniques. It is something that everyone can relate to on some basic humanitarian level. Her prints will remain on exhibit through September 30th.

Heidi J. Hale continues her jewelry workshop offerings throughout September. Call or stop by for more information and a schedule of classes or online at: theartistwithininc.com…sign up to receive our monthly "e-calendar".

Indianapolis Artist to exhibit at Artworks Gallery

News Release
August 9, 2006
Contact: Michael W Hoots, 765-286-2874, matmar52@earthlink.net

Indianapolis Artist to exhibit at Artworks Gallery

Sandy Ezell will exhibit watercolors in varied techniques during the month of September at Artworks Gallery in downtown Muncie. The show will open on First Thursday, September 7, with the artist in attendance from 5 to 8 pm. The public is invited to attend and partake of light refreshments.

Always expanding her vision, Sandy is currently exploring new techniques in experimental watermedia with the goal of allowing the viewer to become more involved in the painting. "If everything is spelled out, it's a one-sided conversation, "Sandy explains. " By creating impressions and abstract areas, someone looking at the painting can bring their own experience to it, and see something unique to them. Then the artist and the viewer have a more interesting discussion."

A native of LaCrosse, WI, Sandy first pursued training and a career in music, receiving her BA from St Olaf College, Northfield, Mn. It was only after her children were in school that she became interested in painting. Since that time, Sandy has gone after her artistic training at the then Indianapolis Art League, and workshops from Masters around the country. Sandy lives in Indianapolis where she is a Signature member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society and the Water Color Society of Indiana.

In addition to being a studio artist, Sandy teaches watermedia at the Indianapolis Art Center, does workshops as requested and operates a custom frame studio in her home. She has had numerous solo exhibits and her work in many corporate and private collections. She has won awards in both regional and local juried art shows, and has shown at the Hoosier Salon regularly.

Artworks is located at 301 S Walnut, in the Mitchell building. The show will be on display through October 4 and may be viewed Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm.

For more information call 288-2221.

News from Downtown Muncie 6/2/06

The Downtown Business Council has worked very hard to partner with Ball State University and, because of your efforts, the families of BSU Orientation will be visiting downtown Muncie this summer!!! They will be dropped off at Walnut at the Crossing (via MITS bus) around 10:45 a.m. and stay until Noon on the following dates: June 6-9, June 13-16, June 20-23, June 27-30, July 6-7, July 11-14 What we need from you is help with our Downtown Script. We want to have bullet points to talk about all of the wonderful things to do downtown, and we would like for you to give us a one-sentence blurb about your organization, business, restaurant, etc. Of course, we need it yesterday (SMILE), but we will take it by the end of the day on Monday. Also, please bring any brochures (100 would be great) that you would like to share with the BSU families to Walnut at the Crossing. They will provide a display for us to share our information. You may take them directly to Walnut at the Crossing, or you can drop them off at Gordy’s or Artist Within. We will also be talking about it on Wednesday morning at our Downtown Business Council meeting, and asking you or your employees to sign up to be downtown tour guides. Thanks in advance for your help! Please email info to Terry Whitt Bailey at tbailey@cornerstonearts.org. Tell your downtown friends to send me their info too! News from Downtown Muncie 4/7/06

From Downtown Business Council: The Chamber of Commerce is preparing to re-do the downtown map. PLEASE get your business on the map! These are widely distributed to convention center attendees, Hotel Roberts' guests, all BSU freshmen, prospective employees of BSU & the hospital, and new residents of Delaware County. Cost is $150 for Chamber members, $250 for non-members and the deadline for entries is April 14th. Contact Traci Lutton at 751.9126 or tlutton@muncie.com.

Did you read the letter to the editor in Thursday's Star Press from a recent visitor from Maine? He had attended the competition at Civic Theatre and enjoyed our revitalized downtown during his breaks. He gave us a hearty congratulations on our efforts; said he was very impressed. Yeah!!!!

From the Beautification Committee: Please sweep your sidewalk and pick up litter around your building on a regular, if not daily, basis. Many businesses downtown are the picture of cleanliness, but alas, a few are not. Kudos to the Tidy Team, and encouragement to all others that the downtown image really does matter on your balance sheet. The church group that cleaned us up last year is returning later this spring, which is wonderful but a tad embarrassing. If we can't take care of the trash in front of our business, what does that say about our business? A healthy business is inviting & comfortable, and draws visitors inside. Let's all strive to be healthy!

Please mark your calendars for BSU Orientation visits:
June 6-9, 13-16, 20-23 and July 6&7, 11-14
Times: shortly after 10:30, until noon
Family members of orientation students will have almost 90 minutes to walk around and visit our cuteness! Prediction is for appx. 100 people each day! If you'd like to help the mini-committee make plans for how to capitalize on this opportunity, contact Genny Gordy at gengor@aol.com or 284-8422. Ideas also welcome!

News from Downtown Muncie, Indiana 3/31/2006

Reminder that BSU Orientation include a downtown visit 22 times this summer for 90 minutes each. What happens once they're shuttled over here is up to us. If you'd like to get in on the planning (banners? balloons? footprints painted on sidewalks? brochures?), or have a great idea, please contact Genny Gordy, gengor@aol.com.

Time to think about flowers again. Does anyone have info on the flower planters we rented last year? It would be great to acknowledge our best flower beds/displays this year. Do we want to promote a color scheme, say, red and white? Comments welcome! If you'd like to serve on a wee committee for this, please contact Genny Gordy, gengor@aol.com

The venue is in the streets of Downtown Muncie at 309 S. Walnut Street (at the intersection of Charles Street). Venue set up is 4,000 reserved seats in a gated area with a lawn area for an additional 3,000 people. Two forty-foot big-screens are set up to broadcast the performances.

The Southern rock group with 18 gold and 12 platinum albums, consistently has drawn capacity crowds with every performance given since reforming in 1987, a full decade after the Freebird fell from the sky, taking the lives of founding members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.

Ronnie's brother, Johnny Van Zant has been fronting the band, keeping rock classics like Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, You Got That Right, That Smell and the rock anthem Freebird alive and well. Two original members, guitar-great Gary Rossington and founding keyboardist Billy Powell support Van Zant.

The Sulentic Brothers Band from South Bend Indiana will be the opening act. This band has opened for Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, and 38 Special, just to name a few. Check them out @ http://www.sulenticbrothersband.com/
