Explore Downtown Muncie's many galleries at our monthly First Thursday gallery walk, Sept. 3, from 5 to 8pm. The galleries simultaneously launch their monthly exhibits on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions and extended hours, live music and light refreshments.
ArtsWalk, a larger arts event in coordination with Ball State University, will take place on September 24th this year. The ArtsWalk event normally takes place during First Thursday in October.
This year's Artswalk date has been changed to Thursday, Sept. 24, to kick off the Governor's Arts Awards celebration. The Governor's Arts Awards ceremony will take place the following evening at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Dave Liggett's Photography Featured at The Artist Within
September at the Artist Within will feature the photography of Ohioan Dave Liggett.The gallery will have the First Thursday opening reception September 3rd from 5-8pm.
A native of Circleville, Ohio, Dave Liggett has been taking pictures for as long as he can remember. Dave loves to combine photography with travel and some of his favorite subjects are landscapes, animals, people, and decaying buildings.
Dave's favorite camera to use is his 4x5--through which he exposes one 4"x5" inch sheet of film at a time--and he enjoys the craftsmanship of film photography which includes developing and printing his own black-and-white negatives. Digital photography has become a necessity in order to meet the quick turnaround times involved with his freelance work.
Dave shows his work mostly in the central Ohio area but individual pieces are exhibited around the world. Some of Dave's photography has been published by National Geographic Kids' Magazine, The New York Times, Africa Geographic, and The World Atlas of Great Apes and Their Conservation. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 26.
ArtsWalk, which is traditionally the First Thursday in October, will be held in conjunction with the "Governor's Arts Awards". This year is the first time the prestigious award presentation will be held in a city other than Indianapolis. The actual award ceremony is to be held on Friday, September 25th at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.
The yearly ArtsWalk will become the "Governor's ArtsWalk" and will be held from 5-9pm on Thursday, September 24th. Live entertainment, art exhibits and demonstrations will fill the streets of Downtown as we showcase the arts that are such a vibrant part of our community. Two Exhibits at Gordys in September
Please mark your September calendars for the biggest "Art Month," in recent history of Muncie. Gordy Fine Art & Framing, along with the other galleries downtown, will have our usual First Thursday Art Openings on September 3rd from 5 to 8 PM.
Three weeks later, on Thursday, September 24th, from 5 to 9 PM,we will all join forces to kick off ArtsWalk 2009. This year, our annual art celebration will be the first of 3 days celebrating the arts as part of the Governor's Arts Awards. Needless to say, we will all be putting our very best efforts into our gallery exhibitions.
Please come to both events and enjoy excellent art, great snacks, a glass of wine or sparkling water, music and conversation. It would be a lovely time to invite out-of-town friends or family to visit Muncie.

Laseau, After the Party Feast your eyes on a new series of watercolor paintings by Muncie artist, Paul Laseau. Twenty six images lure with crisp white details and shady scenes that call the viewer to enter and sit in the cool breezeways of yesteryear. Laseau, architect, BSU professor emeritus, author, traveler and artist will be on hand to greet visitors and answer questions during his opening on Sept. 3rd, from 5 to 8 PM.

John Becker's Masks at Artworks Gallery in September
Artworks featured exhibit for September is "Jon Becker's Masks." There will be an opening reception during First Thursday, September 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.Jonathan Becker is an actor, teacher, director and artist. In addition to acting and teaching, he is considered a master mask maker and is the owner/operator of www.theater-masks.com a full service production shop creating masks and puppets for clients worldwide. Masks from his studio are currently being used by educational institutions, professional theatres and individual artists in over 30 countries.
He is a master teacher of mask in the Collaborative International Acting with Masks Program involving Oslo University College, DAMU in Prague, Nanjing University in China and Ball State University. Jonathan is currently an Assistant professor of Acting and Movement
at Ball State University.

1968 in America exhibit opens at Minnetrista
Do you remember the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the 1968 presidential campaign and the Vietnam War, or Jimi Hendrix playing at the Muncie Fairgrounds? The exhibit 1968 in America opens Saturday, September 5, at Minnetrista. This exhibition traces the tumultuous events of 1968—a year that rocked the foundations of American society. The exhibition engages visitors by showing how the extraordinary events of 1968 were experienced nationally and locally.
1968 in America features artifacts from the Vietnam War, social protests, presidential campaigns, music and television shows from 1968. Visitors to Minnetrista will experience a variety of artifacts including photographs, magazine covers, political memorabilia, textiles, record albums, and other objects as they explore this pivotal moment in American history.
"The 1968 in America exhibit documents a pivotal year in American history," says Rebecca Holmquist, vice president of visitor experience at Minnetrista. "It’s much more than a history lesson. It’s a message about how society, politics and culture of 1968 made fundamental changes in our nation and in our local communities."
Muncie and surrounding community residents are invited to share their recollections, thoughts and stories of 1968, particularly local events, through an online forum. Visitors to the online forum will also be able to read other’s 1968 stories. The forum is available at www.minnetrista.net/1968.
The exhibition is organized and toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance, but many of the artifacts visitors will see have been added from Minnetrista’s extensive collections and from the Museum of the Soldier.

New Store Hours at FB Fogg in Downtown Muncie
From the owners of FB Fogg:
I feel like I've been traveling to trade shows all summer and hardly ever home. Our wholesale trade shows have been our priority this year and unfortunately the business has been very slow. It means we're having to make a number of changes starting with the Fogg Store/Gallery.
Effective immediately, our store hours are moving to just Friday and Saturday from 10-5pm. Our studio production hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9-4pm, and our Mondays are completely closed. Appointments and groups are welcomed. Extended Holiday Hours are likely. Deliveries and inquires are encouraged Tues-Sat. If the door is locked just ring the door bell.
We'll also be open each First Thursday Gallery Walk night from 5-8PM.
Sorry for the inconvenience. To survive in this tough economic environment we continue to make some changes.

travelling exhibit, "Conservation Quest".

Every Friday will get the chance to learn about fun and easy games that
they can play with their friends at home. Fun Game Fridays will be
focused on both new and traditional games, such as hopscotch, four
square, jump rope, etc., with the hope that we can teach children that
there are fun things they can do at home or outside that do not involve
televisions or computers.

Young ArtCamp Artists Exhibit Works at Gallery 308
Most artists are savers or pack rats--and for good reason! Artists use and throw away so many items that can be--and should be--reused or re-purposed. What better way to make use of discarded items than to make new art with them?! Art Mart and The Artist Within have teamed up again to sponsor ArtCamp, a series of four summer camps for young artists between the ages of 6 and 12. These artists will display their artwork made from recycled objects at an ArtCamp Show this August at Gallery 308.
The ArtCamp Show opens on First Thursday, August 6, and runs through August 8. ArtCampers will create art from objects normally thrown away. Imagination abounds when these artists are asked to create something new.
The ArtCamp artists are proud of their work, so please plan to join them at the opening reception on August 6 at Gallery 308, located at 308 East Main in downtown Muncie. Admission is free.
Gallery 308 is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Mike Altman is Featured Artist at The Artist Within
Central Indiana native Mike Altman is the featured artist for August at The Artist Within. An opening reception will be held during First Thursday, August 6th from 5-8pm.According to the artist, "While growing up, Mike Altman never wanted to be anything but an artist... well, ok, maybe Batman for a while." Altman uses simple line work and bold colors to illustrate a sometimes complex message. Altman's work can be laced with symbolism, satire, spirituality, and double-meanings. And then sometimes he just paints a picture of a blue cow that is... a blue cow.
His paintings are intended to make "original artwork affordable" and he feels that collecting original work is a good thing. In addition to this, painting on re purposed cardboard is a "green thing". While cardboard is recyclable it does take energy to recycle it, by painting on it he is re purposing it for the consumer...straight from the dumpster to your living room.
"How disappointing is it to see the artwork on your wall hanging on your neighbors too?" asks Mike.
His work will be exhibited in both the upstairs and main floor galleries.
Young artists from Clay Camp will have their work on display at 308 Gallery the first two weeks of August. The exhibit will include work created by children in summer art camps at the Art Mart and the Artist Within. An opening reception to meet the young artists will be held Thursday August 6th from 5-8 pm. The work will remain on display through 3pm Sat. August 8th.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Celebrates 20 Years, Exhibits 20 Turtles
When Brian and Genny Gordy purchased the Art Mart in the summer of 1989, they had plans to make a few changes. Twenty years later, they are still in remodeling mode as they flip three production rooms to better accommodate the full-menu framing and gilding services that now drive their business. Gone are the art supplies and old name. Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company is a micro-manufacturer of replica frames, hand gilding, frame restoration and traditional framing services. Growing beyond their initial space, the family of artisans wanted to stay in the downtown art scene. The first requirement for expansion was to use all the space allotted. New heating and cooling systems have recently been installed so, for the first time ever, their entire space will be in use.
"We have talked and dreamed about 'the perfect setup' for our manufacturing needs for probably a decade," confesses Genny, president of the art gallery/frame shop. "The old adage that you have to spend money to make money pinched us into action. It has been a challenge to maintain our current schedule with the old setup and we knew growth would be impossible. Opportunities have presented themselves and we feel we are now ready to capitalize on those."
One of the opportunities the Gordy team is counting on is their induction into the Indiana Artisan project. Brian Gordy was accepted in 2008 for both his watercolors and hand-gilded replica frames, and son, Ben, General Manager, was recently given the award for his own line of gilded frames for artists. They both look forward to the project's first trade show in February in Indianapolis. "To be identified as one of the State artisans is a tremendous honor, of course. But the real opportunity for new markets has far-reaching implications for our bottom line," offers the elder Gordy.
Exhibiting fine art from the Muncie area and beyond has also expanded the original shop's offerings. The last remodeling job in 2004 gained a fifty foot long gallery wall in the showroom upon which dozens of artists have displayed paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, sculptures and ceramics. The display
this month, however, will be the owner's work. Brian Gordy is known for his watercolor paintings, and his recent series of the turtles of White River. He has painted 20 new images in the past year, initially shown in a Bloomington gallery.
Returning to Muncie, the exhibit will be the featured show for the Gordy anniversary month, starting with a public reception during the First Thursday art event on August 6th from 5 to 8 PM. A tour of the production areas will be given by Braydee Euliss, Production Manager, at 6 PM. Kyle Rees graduated from Ball State University and teaching art in public school near Indianapolis. He is from and grew up in Daleville, IN. His work ranges from utilitarian vessels to sculptural objects. His goal is to portray movement. He achieves this by altering forms, and adorning surfaces in ways that show the movement of his hands and tools, or the movement of flames as it carries ashes and vapors through the wood and soda kiln.
Abigal Miller - Paintings
Abilgal is an artist from Illinois. Her paintings may range from surrealistic themes to realistic animal and people portraits.
Sharon LaRue - Insect Pins
Sharon LaRue creates colorful painted and beaded insect pins.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts News and Happenings
Join Cornerstone as we celebrate our summer classes! The third annual Cornerstone Carnival will be held August 2nd from 2:00-5:00 pm.
All classes and lessons will be showcased through performances, visual arts exhibits, multimedia, and a private lessons recital. Instructors will be talking to summer students soon about their involvement in the carnival. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for fall classes.
This event is open to the entire community, so make sure to invite your friends, family, and neighbors! The Carnival will include games for children of all ages, prizes, crafts, free classes, performances, refreshments, and much more! Cornerstone Carnival has something fun and exciting for every member of the family.
Cornerstone is currently seeking volunteers who would be interested in helping with a booth or running a game. A volunteer page is available on our Facebook page. Cornerstone Dance Company
Cornerstone Center for the Arts is proud to introduce the Cornerstone Dance Company. The Cornerstone Dance Company will consist of two groups with ages ranging from 5-21 years old. There will be a competition group and a performance group. Auditions will be held August 26-27 at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The dance auditions are free and open to the public. Preparatory workshops are offered but are not required to audition.
The competition group will compete in various competitions and perform at local events. This group will focus on technique development and competitive dance routines. Competition and costume fees will be included in the monthly class fee. Auditions for this group will be held Wednesday, August 26. Ages 5-8 will audition from 4:30-6:00 pm; ages 9-18 will audition 6:00-7:30 pm.
The performance group will perform for various community events including festivals, fairs, and more. This group will focus on technique development and performance choreography without a competitive focus. Auditions for this group will be held Thursday, August 27. Ages 5-8 will audition from 4:30-6:00 pm; ages 9-21 will audition 6:00-7:30 pm.
Individuals who wish to prepare for the audition can sign up for workshops that will focus on the needs of both groups. The dancers will rehearse styles of dance including: tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, and contemporary. Students must register for these workshops to receive a spot. The workshops range from $25-30 and will be held August 24-25.

Looking for after school fun for the whole family? Cornerstone Center for the Arts is offering 12 week classes beginning the week of September 14, 2009. Registration for fall classes will begin August 2, 2009.
Classes are available for every age group and skill level for girls, boys, and adults. Classes are offered in Dance, Visual Arts, Fitness, Music, Theatre, Kindermusik, and Martial Arts. In addition, the Cornerstone Arts Program offers private instruction for all ages in the following areas: drums, guitar, piano, voice, strings, trumpet and saxophone. Harvest Moon Film Festival
It’s not too late to submit your entries for the third annual Harvest Moon Film Festival which will take place November 12 – 14, 2009, in downtown Muncie. The deadline for entries submitted through Withoutabox is extended until July 24, 2009, so there is still plenty of time to showcase your filmmaking. The Harvest Moon Film Festival awards prizes in the areas of feature length, short film, documentary, and student film. The top film receives a $3,000 grand prize. Selected filmmakers will be spotlighted throughout the weekend.

Accepted films will be shown during the festival and be eligible for a prize in their category of $1,000 as well as the grand prize. Cornerstone Art Gallery Exhibit: "Eyes on You"
Cornerstone Center for the Arts will display the photographic artwork of Kenton Waltz beginning July 1, 2009. Kenton Waltz’s collection titled “Eyes on You” will be displayed in the Cornerstone Art Gallery from July 1 through August 21. A reception will be held August 6 from 5-8 pm where patrons are welcome to enjoy the exhibit and discuss the pieces with the artist. The collection was created by a device that Kenton Waltz constructed himself. Utilizing six lights with a camera in the center Kenton Waltz was able to capture a unique effect.
Kenton Waltz is currently a senior at Ball State University studying Theatre and Telecommunications. He first became interested in photography by taking photographs of nature. He believes that his passion and addiction to learn has taught him a great deal about the history and art of photography. He is constantly experimenting with new types of photography and keeps a camera close by, so he never misses a chance to capture a moment.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts would like to extend it’s gratitude for all of the supporters that attended our Noodles & Co. fundraiser on Saturday, June 27. We had a fantastic turn-out! Building Renovations
Cornerstone Center for the Arts is currently undergoing renovations to the building. All classes and lessons will be showcased through performances, visual arts exhibits, multimedia, and a private lessons recital. Instructors will be talking to summer students soon about their involvement in the carnival. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for fall classes.
This event is open to the entire community, so make sure to invite your friends, family, and neighbors! The Carnival will include games for children of all ages, prizes, crafts, free classes, performances, refreshments, and much more! Cornerstone Carnival has something fun and exciting for every member of the family.

Cornerstone Dance Company
Cornerstone Center for the Arts is proud to introduce the Cornerstone Dance Company. The Cornerstone Dance Company will consist of two groups with ages ranging from 5-21 years old. There will be a competition group and a performance group. Auditions will be held August 26-27 at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The dance auditions are free and open to the public. Preparatory workshops are offered but are not required to audition.
The competition group will compete in various competitions and perform at local events. This group will focus on technique development and competitive dance routines. Competition and costume fees will be included in the monthly class fee. Auditions for this group will be held Wednesday, August 26. Ages 5-8 will audition from 4:30-6:00 pm; ages 9-18 will audition 6:00-7:30 pm.
The performance group will perform for various community events including festivals, fairs, and more. This group will focus on technique development and performance choreography without a competitive focus. Auditions for this group will be held Thursday, August 27. Ages 5-8 will audition from 4:30-6:00 pm; ages 9-21 will audition 6:00-7:30 pm.
Individuals who wish to prepare for the audition can sign up for workshops that will focus on the needs of both groups. The dancers will rehearse styles of dance including: tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, and contemporary. Students must register for these workshops to receive a spot. The workshops range from $25-30 and will be held August 24-25.

Registration for Fall Classes Coming Soon!
Looking for after school fun for the whole family? Cornerstone Center for the Arts is offering 12 week classes beginning the week of September 14, 2009. Registration for fall classes will begin August 2, 2009.
Classes are available for every age group and skill level for girls, boys, and adults. Classes are offered in Dance, Visual Arts, Fitness, Music, Theatre, Kindermusik, and Martial Arts. In addition, the Cornerstone Arts Program offers private instruction for all ages in the following areas: drums, guitar, piano, voice, strings, trumpet and saxophone. More details, including the Fall schedule, will be released on our website in early August at www.cornerstonearts.org .
Class fees can be paid upon registration or in payment installments throughout the course of the session. Payment plans and financial aid are available. Harvest Moon Film Festival
It’s not too late to submit your entries for the third annual Harvest Moon Film Festival which will take place November 12 – 14, 2009, in downtown Muncie. The deadline for entries submitted through Withoutabox is extended until July 24, 2009, so there is still plenty of time to showcase your filmmaking. The Harvest Moon Film Festival awards prizes in the areas of feature length, short film, documentary, and student film. The top film receives a $3,000 grand prize. Selected filmmakers will be spotlighted throughout the weekend.
Harvest Moon Film Festival is looking for documentaries, short films, feature length films, and more for the festival weekend. Accepted films will be shown during the festival and be eligible for a prize in their category of $1,000 as well as the grand prize. Cornerstone Art Gallery Exhibit: "Eyes on You"
Cornerstone Center for the Arts will display the photographic artwork of Kenton Waltz beginning July 1, 2009. Kenton Waltz’s collection titled “Eyes on You” will be displayed in the Cornerstone Art Gallery from July 1 through August 21. A reception will be held August 6 from 5-8 pm where patrons are welcome to enjoy the exhibit and discuss the pieces with the artist. The collection was created by a device that Kenton Waltz constructed himself. Utilizing six lights with a camera in the center Kenton Waltz was able to capture a unique effect.
Kenton Waltz is currently a senior at Ball State University studying Theatre and Telecommunications. He first became interested in photography by taking photographs of nature. He believes that his passion and addiction to learn has taught him a great deal about the history and art of photography. He is constantly experimenting with new types of photography and keeps a camera close by, so he never misses a chance to capture a moment.

Noodles & Co. Fundraiser Success
Cornerstone Center for the Arts would like to extend it’s gratitude for all of the supporters that attended our Noodles & Co. fundraiser on Saturday, June 27. We had a fantastic turn-out! Not only were people able to enjoy great food but also great entertainment from our performers. We would like to send a special thank-you to those that donated their time to entertaining the patrons.

Downtown Muncie Rib Fest 2009 Entertainment Lineup
MAX Muncie RibFest will be held in the streets of Downtown Muncie on August 1st from noon-10pm and August 2nd from 11 am-4pm. The event will feature some of the regions finest summer food offerings, arts and craft vendors, 33 bands on 4 stages, gigantic kids area, Dr. Feelgood karaoke contest, beer gardens, custom and classic car cruise-in, remote control car racing and kite flying. Photographer Mary T. McVicker Featured at The Artist Within
Hartford City photographer Mary T. McVicker is the featured artist for July at the Artist Within, in an exhibit titled "Pleasant Sting." An opening reception will be held Thursday July 2nd from 5-8pm with live music by Peter Dragoo and Friends, and light refreshments.
Mary's work will remain on exhibit through July 31, 2009, though The Artist Within is closed for July 4th.
Mary says her photographs are just the way she sees the world. "Every time I step outside, my eyes become a lens - wanting to take that next photograph. For me, looking behind the lens, my environment is beautiful! I believe anything can be photographed, and be a piece of art work. I carry my camera with me everywhere, always looking for something out of the ordinary." explains this young artist.
Mary McVicker grew up in Hartford City, Indiana, always enjoying life, with a camera in her hand. She studied broadcasting in college, but life has brought her back to photography. Mary's passion for photography stirred her to start a local photography club that meets monthly in Hartford City. She enjoys sharing her passion with anyone that will listen!

Beat the Heat This Summer at Minnetrista
Minnetrista continues its commitment to East Central Indiana by reducing economic barriers to enjoying exhibits. "We recognize that these are challenging economic times for Muncie and surrounding communities," said Betty Brewer, president and CEO, "and we want as many as possible to experience the exciting and educational exhibits at Minnetrista."
The entire month of July, admission to Minnetrista is just $4 per person. Visitors will enjoy a cool trip though the “forest” and learn about Animal Secrets. They can discover their connections to the Ball jar in the Can It! exhibit. And then visitors can chill out and enjoy the glass art in Sand and Fire: A Juried Art Show.
"This wonderful array of experiences is great for the entire family," said Rebecca Holmquist, vice president of visitor experience. "It’s hot out, and we would love for people to come to Minnetrista to spend some time relaxing in our exhibit galleries. There are a lot of fun surprises in store for visitors."
In addition to discounted admission, Minnetrista has partnered with local libraries to provide complimentary performances from Minnetrista Theatre Preserves and free admission passes.
For more than 15 years Minnetrista has donated Family Passes for free admission to the Muncie Public Library. Library patrons can check out the passes like any other book or media and return the pass after use. More than 2,000 people have used these passes, bringing the resources of Minnetrista to the public in a more accessible and affordable way. The success of the program has prompted Minnetrista to extend the program to libraries across East Central Indiana. So far, more than 20 libraries have welcomed the opportunity to provide this program.
Minnetrista Theatre Preserves will be performing Hook and the Faerie’s Treasure at participating libraries throughout the summer at no charge!
Hook and the Faerie’s Treasure follows Cobblestone the Sprite on her journey through some of Indiana’s natural attractions to stop the infamous Captain Hook from destroying the environment. Her quest leads us through the White River, Wyandotte Cave, Hoosier National Forest, and the Indiana Sand Dunes. The show is 45 minutes in length followed by a question and answer session with the actors.

The Vagina Monologues at Muncie Civic Theatre

Indy Jazz Orchestra Kicks Off Summer Stage Fest at Minnetrista
It's time for Summer Stage Fest at Minnetrista! The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will kick-off the season Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. A dance floor will be a part of the evening's festivities. Animal Mania at Muncie Children's Museum
The Muncie Children's Museum welcomes two new creatures to our family of animals: a chinchilla and an American Alligator named Blue!
The MCM is proud to have Blue, the American Alligator, on temporary exhibit, and a female chinchilla that will be a permanent fixture at the museum.
Blue is a three year old alligator that is two feet long and really likes to eat fish, crickets and mice. Although Blue is only two feet long right now, he has the potential to one day grow to an impressive 15 feet in length and weigh 1,000 pounds! American Alligators are one of two crocodilians native to the United States; the other being the American crocodile. Blue will only be at the museum through August so come and see him soon!
The newest member of the museum's animal family is a female chinchilla. She does not have a name yet, but visitors are encouraged to submit a name for the chinchilla naming contest. Five names will be drawn by staff members and placed on voting bins for visitors to cast their vote. The highest voted name will be given to the chinchilla, and the visitor who submitted the name will be awarded a one year MCM family membership.
Want a chance to see and interact with the newest additions to the MCM's animal family? Come to the Muncie Children's Museum every Wednesday, at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m., for "Wildlife Wednesdays", when MCM educators focus on a different MCM animal. Visitors will learn about the animal, what animal family they are a part of, feel the animal and ask any questions that they may have. Visitors will also get to participate in animal-related story time and an animal-related craft.

Ben Gordy Awarded Indiana Artisan Designation
When Ben Gordy was four years old, he followed his dad, Brian, around their garage frame shop, hammering nails into stray boards and the ladder to "help" with the workload. Twenty five years later the family ladder still shows those early marks, but Gordy has now earned the highest marks from the State of Indiana for his signature gilded frames.
He was recently awarded the Indiana Artisan designation, a standard bestowed on his father a few months earlier. Each was juried into the program on their first attempt, and both men now qualify to participate in Indiana Artisan workshops and trade shows that will boost their frame line's brand.
A Muncie native, Gordy lived in Minneapolis for a few years, where he worked at a large frame shop. Returning to Muncie with his bride and some new framing ideas, Ben found a comfortable home in the family business, where he now serves as General Manager.
"Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company is a family-owned and operated small business in downtown Muncie. The fact that two of our framers would be separately juried into this prestigious program is a tremendous honor and also a responsibility - to our clients, and to the Indiana Artisan program," stated Genny Gordy, president, wife to Brian, and mother to Ben.
"The Gordy men have studied with some of the country's best-known gilders and the depth of their dedication to the art shows up in their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and general enthusiasm about the world of frames. I believe they're up to the task."
Specifically, the younger Gordy has developed a line of gilded frames rooted in the genre of American Plein Air painters like Winslow Homer or Childe Hassam. He has named them, "The Artist Gold Series." Using lower priced metal leaf - as opposed to the true gold leaf they often apply - the framer subtly tones each frame to harmonize with the color palettes of contemporary artists' works, or with particular interiors. This specialty toning effort separates Gordy Fine Art & Framing from other frame shops. In fact, few frame shops in the country offer the traditional gilding services.

Downtown Muncie is gearing up for its most delicious event - RibFest 2009 returns to the streets of downtown Saturday, August 1st, from noon - 10pm and Saturday, August 2nd from 11am - 4pm. Applications are being accepted for Food Vendors as well as Arts, Crafts or Community information booths.

Wysor Street Depot Open for the Weekend on National Trails Day
Cardinal Greenway will open the Wysor Street Depot on weekends beginning this Saturday, June 6. Saturday is also is National Trails Day and the beginning of Indiana Trails Week as proclaimed by Governor Mitch Daniels. The theme for National Trails Day is "Take in the Outdoors", the Cardinal Greenways are a wonderful way to do just that. Join us at the end of Indiana Trails Week by participating in our 10K Run/5K Walk on June 13. Registration begins at 6:30 am at the Depot.
Weekend hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Normal week-day hours will remain Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Wysor Street Depot serves as a trailhead with indoor restrooms, water, gift shop, and local historical displays; as well as the corporate offices for Cardinal Greenway, Inc.
"We continue to receive numerous requests to be open on weekends," says Angie Pool, Development Director for Cardinal Greenway, Inc. "Many of these requests have come as a result of community members learning of the free Cruiser Bike Loaner program operated from the Depot. In exchange of a picture ID and signing a waiver, trail users can take out a loaner bike during Depot hours. This year we are encouraging kids to ride our cruiser bikes. We will be providing a chance for kids who ride to win a bike of their own!"
The Depot also houses a gift shop that in addition to cold drinks and healthy snacks; also offers new Cardinal Greenway items, train related merchandise, local artwork, and various other types of merchandise for sale.

All Over the Place: Works by Mark Van Buskirk at Gallery 308
Gallery 308 is pleased to announce the opening of a new show, "All Over the Place," on Thursday, June 4. There will be a public reception to welcome the artist, Mark Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk is Associate Professor of Art at Earlham College. Represented by the F.A.N. Gallery in Philadelphia, his award-winning paintings have been shown locally and nationally. His recent work explores contemporary and traditional approaches to painting and is marked by a focus on craftsmanship, both on and behind the surface of the painting.
Intrigued? Then be sure to attend the show's opening reception, 5 to 8 p.m., First Thursday in June at 308 East Main Street, Muncie. Admission is free; light refreshments will be provided. "All Over the Place" will be on display through the end of June.
