Create for the Cure
The Artist Within, in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the CCSA (Contemporary Ceramic Studios of America), is participating in the national campaign "Create for the Cure" to help support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The event is scheduled for the week of October 2-8, 2005, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Our participation will be conducted in several ways. The first will be the donation of 100% of studio fees collected during the week; secondly, we will have a "Change for the Cure" jar for customers to make donations. In the third phase of our campaign, we are asking local artists to "Paint a Plate for the Cure". Ceramic plates painted by our participating artists will be on display and included in a silent auction held during the week. ArtsWalk, October 6th, should draw a large crowd and a lot of generous bids. Winning bids will be announced Saturday October 8, 2005 and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Komen foundation.
The Artist Within will provide all necessary materials for participants; we are asking the artist for their creative touch. Artists are invited to join us Wednesday, September 21st from 6-9 for our "Paint a Plate Party", an evening of food, fun and painting.
Please give this worthy cause as much of your attention and press coverage as possible. Wednesday's "Paint a Plate Party" would be a good "photo-op".

She is a member of many watercolor societies including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. She is a Dolphin Fellow. She has received numerous awards and is widely published and included in many public and corporate collections.. San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. She will teach workshop participants different methods of creating paintings. The workshop is limited to 15 artists.

The annual Artswalk with Ball State University is slated for Thursday, October 6th from 5 to 9 PM. The public is invited to visit the various galleries and exhibit locations downtown, as well as Minnetrista, the BSU Atrium Gallery and the BSU Museum. Trolley busses will run throughout the evening between the different locations.
The Gordy-Nelson exhibit, titled, "Natural Forms" will showcase recent watercolors by Gordy that include several turtle scenes on the White River, and metal sculptures by Nelson that also draw from nature.

She is a member of many watercolor societies including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. She is a Dolphin Fellow. She has received numerous awards and is widely published and included in many public and corporate collections.. San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. She will teach workshop particpants different methods of creating paintings. The workshop is limited to 15 artists.

The team visited Kenya in 2004 with the IU-Kenya AMPATH program . The Power of One explains how each person has the power to make a difference and transform the world one person at a time. Be a part of all the excitement and festivities during the Annual Old Washington Street Festival to be held on the four blocks of East Washington Street between Madison and Hackley Streets. The primary focus of the Old Washington Street Festival is on the architectural, cultural, and social heritage of Muncie's Emily Kimbrough Historic District and the surrounding neighborhood. Home tours and a walking tour extend the bounds of the Festival to approximately fourteen square blocks. At the hub of the Festival on Washington Street are demonstrations of crafts contemporary to the turn of the century, arts and crafts displays, musical entertainment, an ice cream social and other refreshments, antiques, a milk wagon and a hand-drawn fire pumper to take visitors back to the gas boom era. We expect the variety of attractions to draw over 8,000 people.

San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. MuncieDowntown.com has just received word from the folks at Downtown Development that Lynyrd Skynyrd has cancelled their show at the End of Summer Jam in Downtown Muncie, as well as the rest of their tour. Singer Jonnie Van Zant requires throat surgery to remove a vocal cord polyp.
Downtown Development is seeking a comparable headlining act so that the End of Summer Jam may go on as planned. Fans who have already bought tickets may return them at the point of purchase for a refund - or hang onto them, as they will be honored at the End of Summer Jam regardless of the headlining act.

The team visited Kenya in 2004 with the IU-Kenya AMPATH program . The Power of One explains how each person has the power to make a difference and transform the world one person at a time. Hey gang! We are going to try some new formats with the newsletter in the upcoming months. New is good! The newsletter has gotten to be so long and detailed we are going to try for short....like something that will only take you 5 min. to read. PLEASE give us feedback on this and other ways to make this newsletter valuable to you and other folks downtown. 13th Gordy Fine Art & Framing offering classes by professional artist Brian Gordy ; beginning Watercolor classes on Tuesday evenings for ten weeks beginning September 13, 2005. Adults and children over 15 who have some drawing skills will be guided through basic techniques for still life and landscape painting. Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor class will be offered on Wednesday evenings for those students with some background in watercolor techniques who wish to develop personal skills and style. Both classes meet from 6 to 8 PM at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company, 224 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.

Be a part of all the excitement and festivities during the Annual Old Washington Street Festival to be held on the four blocks of East Washington Street between Madison and Hackley Streets. The primary focus of the Old Washington Street Festival is on the architectural, cultural, and social heritage of Muncie's Emily Kimbrough Historic District and the surrounding neighborhood. Home tours and a walking tour extend the bounds of the Festival to approximately fourteen square blocks. At the hub of the Festival on Washington Street are demonstrations of crafts contemporary to the turn of the century, arts and crafts displays, musical entertainment, an ice cream social and other refreshments, antiques, a milk wagon and a hand-drawn fire pumper to take visitors back to the gas boom era. We expect the variety of attractions to draw over 8,000 people.

6th The Annual Altrusa Style Show presents: "Red Carpet To Style" at the Horizon Convention Center. Two Shows: Noon Luncheon $25 and 7:00pm Dinner $30.
Several area stores will be showing Fall and Winter fashions. Popular WLBC Morning Show host Steve Lindel will emcee. Upon arrival, guests will have the opportunity to rub elbows with 'Joan
Rivers', 'Opra', etc. (all in fun played by Muncie actors.) Great door prizes, tickets available for fabulous merchandise from local stores. Proceeds benefit Altrusa service projects focused on literacy, youth development and the advancement of women. Thanks for your support!

She is a member of many watercolor societies including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. She is a Dolphin Fellow. She has received numerous awards and is widely published and included in many public and corporate collections.. San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. She will teach workshop particpants different methods of creating paintings. The workshop is limited to 15 artists.

18 & 19 Old Washington Street Festival, Saturday 10-5, Sunday Noon-5
Be a part of all the excitement and festivities during the Annual Old Washington Street Festival to be held on the four blocks of East Washington Street between Madison and Hackley Streets. The primary focus of the Old Washington Street Festival is on the architectural, cultural, and social heritage of Muncie's Emily Kimbrough Historic District and the surrounding neighborhood. Home tours and a walking tour extend the bounds of the Festival to approximately fourteen square blocks. At the hub of the Festival on Washington Street are demonstrations of crafts contemporary to the turn of the century, arts and crafts displays, musical entertainment, an ice cream social and other refreshments, antiques, a milk wagon and a hand-drawn fire pumper to take visitors back to the gas boom era. We expect the variety of attractions to draw over 8,000 people.

7th -9th Watercolor workshop by PAT SAN SOUCIE 9-4 PM located 400 arts and Journalisom Bldg at Ball State. Pat San Soucie is a renowned painter, educator and juror. She is a member of many watercolor societies including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. She is a Dolphin Fellow. She has received numerous awards and is widely published and included in many public and corporate collections.. San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. She will teach workshop particpants different methods of creating paintings. The workshop is limited to 15 artists.

Lynyrd Skynyrd to Headline Jam
Muncie, IN -- Legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd will headline this year's "End-of-Summer" Jam.
The concert will be held in the streets of downtown Muncie on Saturday, September 24th. Tickets will go on sale August 15th at 10am through all Ticketmaster locations and Ticketmaster.com.
The opening act will be rock group Foghat.
Reserved seat tickets are $40, $30, and $25. A limited number of lawn seats will be available for $20.
The Southern rock group with 18 gold and 12 platinum albums, consistently has drawn capacity crowds with every performance given since reforming in 1987, a full decade after the Freebird fell from the sky, taking the lives of founding members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.
Ronnie's brother, Johnny Van Zant has been fronting the band, keeping rock classics like Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, You Got That Right, That Smell and the rock anthem Freebird alive and well. Two original members, guitar-great Gary Rossington and founding keyboardist Billy Powell support Van Zant.
A recent USA Today readers' poll ranked Lynyrd Skynyrd as the 16th greatest rock and roll band of all-time.
The 70's rock group Foghat will open the evening at 7:00pm with hits like Fool for the City and Slow Ride.

A note from Genny Gordy, Chair Downtown Business Council:
We have several active committees now working on issues from Christmas to marketing to snow removal. If you want to help steer the development of our downtown, please sign on to a committee! At this point, we are seeking individuals who would like to serve on our first Executive Committee. This committee will oversee the various functions of Downtown Business Council, set policies, and arrange our first elections, hopefully by December.
You could serve a term as short as 5 months (until elections), or longer, based on what this committee decides are terms, and election results, of course. The Executive Committee will truly be a working committee, meaning, we have much work to do in these first months! We'll meet regularly, perhaps every 2 weeks, but will do our best to stick to a one-hour meeting time. If you are interested in a leadership position, play well with others, and can commit one to two hours a week to DBC, this message is for you!
While we will be asking for representation from several specific organizations, two or three spots are open for members-at-large. How about YOU?!!! Please email a short statement of interest to me at: gengor@aol.com, or call 284-8422 to offer your much-appreciated services!

Old National: Doug Lippert of Old National removed a section of fence from our parking area that fronts on Walnut at Charles, then added mulch and flower pots to make it a walkway in order for downtown visitors to easily get to and from their cars when using our lot. He is going to add pavers soon to make it an 'official' walkway.

This committee will oversee the various functions of Downtown Business Council, set policies, and arrange our first elections, hopefully by December.
You could serve a term as short as 5 months (until elections), or longer, based on what this committee decides are terms, and election results, of course. The Executive Committee will truly be a working committee, meaning, we have much work to do in these first months! We'll meet regularly, perhaps every 2 weeks, but will do our best to stick to a one-hour meeting time. If you are interested in a leadership position, play well with others, and can commit one to two hours a week to DBC, this message is for you!

Old National: Doug Lippert of Old National removed a section of fence from our parking area that fronts on Walnut at Charles, then added mulch and flower pots to make it a walkway in order for downtown visitors to easily get to and from their cars when using our lot. He is going to add pavers soon to make it an 'official' walkway.

Join us for a special event planned just for them. The preschool fairy teas are for girls ages 3-5 and must be accompanied by an adult. Young fairies will dance around the garden and have a summer tea in the meadow. Due to limited psace, siblings who attend must also register and pay.
14th Minnestrista Quilters' Celebration 2005 - Minnetrista Minne-Trip 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
We will travel to Marion, Indiana to visit the Quilters Hall of Fame located in the Marie Webster House, a national historic landmark. Following lunch and a tour of Marion's Wilson-Vaughan Historic Hostess House, we'll tour some other Marion sites displaying quilts as part of the celebration. Price: Members, $35 per person; non-members, $45 per person. Price includes lunch.
15th Danners Books & Gifts 10:30 p.m. - midnight a Harry Potter Party. It will be outside in the store's parking lot at 1316 N. Wheeling Ave. The HP Party will have a carnival atmosphere with lots of Harry Potter inspired booths such as Honeydukes Sweet Shoppe, Olivander's Wands and Gringott's Bank plus many others. Bob Walsh will be bringing his Baskin-Robbins goodies
and Brenda West and her family will have their gourmet popcorn. There is no charge to come, but the booths have small participation fees. At midnight plus 1 second, Danner's staff and volunteers will be passing out pre-paid copies of the sixth Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
16th Minnestrista Unique Irwin Gardens - Minnetrista Minne-Trip 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
This private garden was created in 1911 and was based on an Italian garden located in Pompeii. Learn from the horticulturist about the formal flower gardens, shrubs, and herb gardens. Relax during lunch at the Columbus Inn Tea Room and finish off the trip with a stroll through the Columbus Historical Society Museum's herb garden maintained by Master Gardeners. Price: Members, $25 per person; non-members, $35 per person. Price includes lunch.

Camp Minnetrista is an exciting summer opportunity for children to be active, have fun, and learn something new within Minnetrista's unique campus. The camp's staff is comprised of teachers and other educators from across the region. Campers will attend two classes each day. Class topics range from Nature Area Expeditions, Glass Works, Gardens Galore, and much more. Price: Members, $60 per camper; non-members, $75 per camper
23th Minnestrista Richmond IN, Hot Glass Artist, Steve Sizelove workshop 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Learn the basics of working with glass to make solid pieces (like jewelry). Steve will emphasize safe working habits while participants explore the properties of clear and colored glass. Participants will finish the workshop having made pieces to take home. Price: Minnetrista members, $15; non-members, $25 (includes lunch).

Gain a better understanding of glass art by working on hollow pieces (like a small bottle). Participants will explore how the base shape of a bubble can become any hollow form--from goblets to sculptures. Participants will finish the workshop having made at least one hollow
piece to take home (or at least having tried to--this isn't easy!). Price: Minnetrista members, $15; non-members, $25 (includes lunch).

7th -9th Watercolor workshop by PAT SAN SOUCIE 9-4 PM located 400 arts and Journalisom Bldg at Ball State. Pat San Soucie is a renowned painter, educator and juror. She is a member of many watercolor societies including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. She is a Dolphin Fellow. She has received numerous awards and is widely published and included in many public and corporate collections.. San Soucie creates watermedia paintings in a unique style by pouring pigments through filters, yielding abstract textures, shapes and colors. She will teach workshop particpants different methods of creating paintings. The workshop is limited to 15 artists.
