Cure Your Cabin Fever at First Thursday Downtown

Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie this First Thursday, April 3rd, from 5 to 8pm. Our many art galleries spotlight their exhibit openings on the first Thursday evenings of every month, with meet-the-artist receptions.

Some of the gallery events (in alphabetical order by gallery) at the next First Thursday:

The Artist Within ~ 313 S Walnut Street ~ 765-289-7895
"Wax and Water" will showcase the talents of several local artists during April at The Artist Within. This exhibit of experimental water colors and encaustics will occupy both the upstairs and main gallery space and is the collaborative effort of 21 artists, Marilyn Derwenskus and the Artist Within. The show runs April 1 through April 30 with an opening reception Thursday, April 3 from 5-8pm. Traditional water color techniques may be seen in the work of these advanced students, but it is the way that they push the boundaries that stands out and makes this such an exciting collection of work. The ages old medium of encaustic can trace its roots back to ancient Greece where it was used in decorative painting on mummy cases. Old techniques are approached in creative and innovative ways as these artists explore painting with wax. A demonstration of the process is planned for the opening night of the exhibit.

Muncie Civic Theatre Public Meeting April 1st

Muncie Civic Theatre has been a cornerstone to Downtown Muncie for many, many years, and our community is in danger of losing this wonderful establishment. There will be a public meeting on April 1st at 7pm at the theatre, 216 E. Main Street.
Please read the following letter from its executive director, and do whatever you can to help out. All of downtown Muncie suffers with every business that closes, and we can't afford to lose our Civic Theatre. It is important that we all support our downtown entertainment venues, shops and restaurants, to the best of our abilities, so that we may all enjoy the benefits of a vital city center and continue our growth toward a better downtown.
-Ed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this email. I think it's important and when you're done reading I hope you'll think so too. No one can deny that the quality of programming that has happened at Muncie Civic Theatre (MCT) over the past 5 years has just gotten better and better. You, our volunteers, are 100% credited for that.

As a volunteer, you give of your self to a cause that is near to your heart. Performing and being a part of, not only the casts of shows, but also involved in the artistic production of our shows. We cannot function without your help. By sharing your many talents with the community you enrich the world we live in.

Many of you have made it very clear to our board of directors, and me personally, that it is very clear we are on the right path, here, artistically. We've heard high praise that in the past couple of years the quality of our shows continue to climb. We're proud of that. Our mission of producing family friendly shows for this community and the surrounding communities is obviously a well chosen path. Thank you for your continued support.

The organization now faces some hard decisions. Even though single ticket sales have increased over the past 3 years, we are now faced with closing our doors. Due to corporate sponsorship support decline over the past couple of years and an economy that doesn't support fundraising efforts as we had hoped, MCT will have to close and no longer be a part of this artistic community. The board of directors, and myself, believe that this will not happen with your help. We are now turning to you to help us save the theatre.

We have some great ideas on the table of how this can happen but we need your help to do them. We would also like to hear from you if you have some ideas of ways the theatre could raise some funds in a timely fashion.

There will be a public meeting on April 1st at 7pm at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 E. Main Street.

Thanks for you support,
Marty Grubbs- Executive Director
and the Staff at MCT

Gallery 308 Living Arts Series Presents Kimberly Anderson

Ceramist Kimberly Anderson will present a free slide presentation featuring her work for Gallery 308's Living Arts program, at 7 p.m. on Thursday March 27. Anderson will bring some pieces of new work, or work-in-progress work to show and discuss.

Anderson's work—which is mainly 3-D ceramic pieces (vessels) in a figural style—will be shown in the Founders Gallery in May with "The 4 Femmes" exhibit. She is the most recent artist to offer an educational program in conjunction with work being shown at the Gallery. Living Arts is a series offered at Gallery 308 each month.

Anderson has been an Instructor of Ceramics at the Indianapolis Center for the Arts since 1995. She teaches all levels of ceramic classes at the ICA and is an adjunct faculty member at Ball State in ceramics and life drawing.

Her sculpture and figurative vessels reference archeological excavations, feminine roles, cycles of renewal and decay—an ongoing investigation about woman as vessel. Anderson performs all aspects of the creative process in her work; all the functional work is hand thrown and altered on the wheel while the clay is wet. Her work is unique and original; no molds of mass production are used. She personally fires all of her work.

The Evanston, Illinois native has a 1990 BA from California University (California, Pennsylvania), a BFA from West Virginia University (1992), and an MFA from Wichita State University (1994). All three degrees had an emphasis in ceramics.

21 Artist Exhibit "Wax and Water" at The Artist Within

Dan will discuss his images at 6 p.m., then return to Gallery 308 until 9 to answer questions. His book will be available for purchase and signing at this time.

The American Red Cross and other agencies with disaster preparedness information will have tables set up in the Founder's Gallery at G308. Admission is free.

Dan will also be hanging out at Jack's Camera on Friday April 4 and teaching workshops in the Founder's Gallery on April 5 &6. Contact Sherry Powell or Tom Nahre at Jack's Camera 765-282-0204 or Gallery 308 at 765-289-8575 for more information.

Dan's new exhibition and book, The Color of Loss; An Intimate Portrait of New Orleans after Katrina, (University of Texas Press, 2008) documents the flooded interiors of the homes, schools, churches and workplaces of the city. These images of post-Katrina New Orleans capture a stunningly intimate portrait of the destruction suffered by
the city and its residents.

In 2006, just months after Katrina traumatized the City of New Orleans, Dan Burkholder ventured into the dark, mold-infested interiors to photograph the aftermath of the hurricane. Employing cutting edge photographic techniques, Burkholder captures the damage in stunningly detailed color prints that are full of detail from the brightest highlights to the deepest shadows. There is a seductive quality to the images, luring the viewer for a closer look, only to be confronted with the chaos of the scenes before them.

Dan was one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990's. Melding his unique vision with mastery of both wet and digital darkrooms, his platinum/palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in museum and private collection internationally.

Dan lives in Palenville, New York, with his wife, Jill Skupin Burkholder, and their six cats.

Muncie Civic Presents Anne of Green Gables

Muncie Civic Theatre, Delaware County’s historic 76-year old arts leader, presents ANNE OF GREEN GABLES on March 28, 29 and April 10, 11, 18 & 19at 7:30pm as well as April 6 at 2:00pm. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults, $6 for college students and $5 for high school age or younger. The production is rated G. All performances will be on the main stage at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street, Muncie, Indiana. Tickets are available by calling 765-288-PLAY or at the Box Office.

In ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, Green Gables is the home of the lovable Matthew Cuthbert and his stern sister, Marilla. They agree to adopt a boy to help with the farm work. Imagine their consternation when Anne Shirley, a girl in her teens, is sent by the orphanage by mistake! Anne touches Matthew's heart with her vivid imagination and her charitable viewpoint, but it takes time to reach the tender heart beneath Marilla's hard exterior. This dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery's literary classic. Audiences follow the young orphan from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen's Academy. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne's growth from adolescence to early adulthood are here: her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, the scholastic achievements, and the saving of Green Gables. Whether audiences are "old friends" of Anne's or meeting her for the first time, this play will foster a lasting friendship between them and one of literature's most unforgettable characters.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is directed by Civic Executive Director Marty Grubbs and features performances by a combination of Civic veterans and young performers, many of whom have matriculated through Civic's Young Actor's Workshop program. Included in the cast are Wanita Spence, Charles Retherford, Emily Wolfert, Linda Sherfick, Hillary Metzger, Skylar Etchison, Cody Freeman, Stephen Dean, Kathy Rapkin, Sue Templin, Lisa Walker, and Anessa Mosier..

Gordy's Presents "The Frame Show: Framus Fantasticus" in April

Gold. Thin sheets of gold deftly applied to hand-carved frames that have been painstakingly prepared to grab the light-as-air 22 karat finish.
These are not your everyday frames, but rather, replicas of famous frames with famous names - Whistler, Sulley, Hassam, Louis XXVI. Frames you might see in museums, or the homes of serious art collectors. Frames you wouldn't expect to be crafted in Muncie, Indiana. But then, Muncie does have an exceptional art history of its own, and now it has an exceptional framing tradition in the father- son team of Brian and Ben Gordy.

Brian Gordy, formerly an art teacher and interior designer, current watercolor artist and shop owner, began learning the centuries-old gilding (gold leafing) technique in 2003 by attending workshops in northern California and Tennessee for frame restoration. Workshops in following years in Philadelphia and Las Vegas added to his interest and skills in gilding. Inspired to apply his artistic talents to his framing trade, Gordy made his first gilded frames in his downtown shop in 2005. Enter Peter Blume, Ball State University Museum of Art director, in need of a gilded frame for a Homer watercolor in the museum's collection. Homer just happened to be Gordy's favorite American watercolorist, so he was excited to build a special frame for the museum's upcoming exhibit.

Ben Gordy watched closely as his father built the raw frame, applied ten to twelve coats of gesso (liquid plaster), sanded this to a smooth finish, and then applied bole (liquid clay), all just to prepare for the actual gold leaf. Using a wide, flat brush that appears to be only single hairs thick, the elder Gordy would pick up the ultra-thin sheets (approximately 1/250,000th of an inch) and apply the gold. Next steps included burnishing, distressing with chains, knives, razors, and ice picks, and rubbing to reveal just the right amount of color underneath. Finally, the frame was sealed, antiqued with pigment washes, then waxed & dusted to simulate age - the same basic process that has been used for hundreds of years. The younger Gordy was hooked.

Fortunately, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. was offering gilding workshops in the Fall of 2006. The Gordy men signed up to participate in different courses in order to cast the widest net of information-gathering possible. Returning to Muncie, they immediately began ramping up a new department in the family business. Special tools, suppliers, and support products had to be purchased, along with an array of gold leaf. Rooms had to be redesigned to function as gilding studios. Spray areas, air cleaners and special racks were installed. And then, the duo began the task of gilding an exclusive line of frames - Gordy frames, all hand gilded, toned, and ready for public display.

That display kicks off with The Frame Show during the month of April. Subtitled, Framus Fantasticus, to draw attention to the high art of gilded frame, the exhibit includes works by local artists to show historically-matched frames for each entry. Jim Faulkner's scene of a Federal style house will be displayed in a Federal-style frame. Alan Patrick's landscape will be shown in an American Impressionist-style frame. The other featured artists will include Shonet Lambert Martin, Robert Farlow, Charlene George, Margie Prim, David Slonim, Carol Strock Wasson and the framer, Brian Gordy.

The Frame Show opens during the monthly First Thursday art event on April 3rd from 5 to 8 PM. Peter Blume will offer remarks about the framing at 6:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. The exhibit may also be viewed until April 26th during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Gordy Fine Art and Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Civic Theatre. For more information call 284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Muncie Civic Theatre Presents Godspell

Muncie Civic Theatre, Delaware County’s historic 76-year old arts leader, presents the celebrated rock musical GODSPELL on March 20, 21, 22 and April 4, 5, 12 & 17 at 7:30pm as well as March 30 at 2:00pm.

Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, and featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz, GODSPELL is one of the biggest Broadway successes of all time. The tuneful score features a string of well-loved songs, led by the international hit "Day By Day." As the cast performs "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord," "All Good Gifts," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All For The Best," "Turn Back, O Man," and "By My Side," the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life. Drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, GODSPELL is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The New York Post called GODSPELL "A hit! A big, big, hit. GODSPELL believes in God – and people – and possibility," while Billboard said "GODSPELL turns the theatre into a joyous palace!" and NBC-TV raved "It's marvelous...it says 'love thy neighbor' and it means it."

GODSPELL is directed by professional guest artist Matthew C. Scott and features performances by a combination of Civic regulars and fresh new faces including Chris Meier, Stevie Hahn, Emma Smith, Catie Noller, Amanda Reyome, Cody Ricks, Rachel Rapkin, Brian Wagner, Nick Blevins, Justin Cochran and Cathy Nix. March Specials at Blue Bottle Coffee Shop

Spring MUST be on the way ! One day the temperature is almost 60, the next day freezing and snow, High School basketball tourneys are in full swing ( I'm sure you Delta fans are happy) and we change our clocks again this coming weekend. Yep....spring is almost here.

As some of you know, we are now open for dinner Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights. Chelsea has planned our specials for March and here they are:

Monday & Tuesday Lunch.... Red beans and Rice with Cheddar Jalapeno Corn Muffin
Wednesday Lunch... Etoufee with Cheddar Jalapeno Corn Muffin
Thurday Lunch.. SURPRISE
Friday and Saturday Lunch and Dinner Specials:
3/7 Blackend Salmon Pasta
3/8 Cajun Spiced Pork Chops with Sweet Potato Casserole
3/14 Corn and Black Bean Samosa with Avacado (Vegetarian)
3/15 Beef with red wine reduction and roasted veggies
3/21 Fish with lemon sauce and corn pudding
3/22 Blackened Chicken with corn pudding
3/28 Jerk Tempeh Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries (Vegetarian)
3/29 Jerk Chicken with Cheddar Grits

As you can see we are adding some vegetarian dishes to the menu at the request of our customers. For you meat eaters, there will still be selections available. The above are just the specials. Look for the Monday through Wednesday items to become the permanent specials for those days. Those specials are available about every day later in the week as well.

Chelsea, Jenica and myself attended the Sysco Spring Food show in indianapolis and came home with some new items and ideas that we will be presenting soon. Several will become regular items on the new menu coming out in about a month. Most of the menu will NOT be changing. We will still be keeping our best sellers, just making some room for constant requests. We saw our friends Kent, Steve and Dave from Vera Maes cruising for ideas to bring to there fantastic eating establishment so don't forget to stop in to see what they come up with. Those guys are always thinking !

Today is the first Thursday of the month which means that the downtown art galleries are open late. Come downtown and find something to hang on that blank wall or set on that empty place on the shelf. Oh yes, don't forget, we are open until nine so you can get a hot beverage or a quick meal.

One last note. A little late for some, but not others. Today is Red-tail Day at the Blue Bottle. 10% of our sales will go to The Red-tail Conservancy. Barry Banks and his staff and all of the Red-tail supporters continue to do a great job helping to save some of our countries natural assets. I have been a supporter of Red-tail from it's early days and have been impressed with this fine organization. Help us save our land for generations to come.

Don't forget those clocks next Sunday and if you wonder what to do with that extra hour of daylight.........drink coffee !

Meet the Artists at First Thursday Downtown

Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie for extended hours this First Thursday, March 6th, from 5 to 8pm.

March at the Artist Within will feature paintings by Lynnsy Terrill. Although Lynnsy was born and raised in Fort Wayne, she now calls Muncie home. After coming to Muncie to attend Ball State University in 1991 and graduating from there in 1995, she has settled in and never left this area.

She is very active in the live art weekends at Muncie Alliance Church and frequently paints at the Friday Night Cafe's that are held there. She feels that this is a great way to expose the community to the arts and people seem to enjoy watching her paint and following the progress of her work.

Lynnsy believes that everyone has a story to tell and her paintings are her way of documenting her spiritual journey in life. "Documenting my life is important to me and sometimes I feel like my paintings are like having my journal entries all over the walls", states this young artist. She works primarily with oils, acrylics and collage and "Veritas in Color" (Truth in Color) is an exhibit of her recent works.

Her exhibit will be held March 4-29, 2008 with an opening reception, that is free and open to the public, from 5-8pm on Thursday, March 6.

Lynnsy Terrill has displayed her work in Indianapolis and locally at Danner's Bookstore, Mitchell Place Gallery, Muncie Alliance Church, Pathologists Associated and has had work in the consignment shop at the Artist Within.

She is a member of the Madison County Art Association, Indiana Artists’ Club, Hoosier Salon, Indiana Watercolor Society and the Henry Art Association.

Gallery 308 ~ 308 E. Main Street ~ 765-289-8575

Gallery 308 will exhibit "Ben Bates and Ted Neal: New Ceramics Work." The opening reception for the pair's new exhibit is First Thursday, March 6 at 308 East Main in downtown Muncie. Admission is free; refreshments will be served.

Between them they have a wealth of experience-and a wealth of talent. Neal is an assistant professor of art at Ball State; Bates is a Ceramics Studio Artist living in Libertyville, Illinois and a ceramics instructor at the College of Lake County (Illinois).

Neal enjoys working in a dichotomy of styles. He is currently exploring both utility and sculpture within the realm of the clay vessel. Themes that dominate his sculptural work are the "proliferation of mass-produced industrial objects, the modern need for portability, and the veneration of the commonplace." He is especially interested in objects that are discarded or have disappeared into the background-objects that have gone from useful to garbage and sometimes back again.

Bates is interested in the functional format as a realm of exploration but strives to transcend the utilitarian boundaries and function as sculptural elements. He uses the ideals of the vessel to clarify design and explore form as it relates to space. "To me, working in clay is more about composition, proportion and surface than it is about efficiency of use."

Gordy Fine Art & Framing ~ 224 E Main Street ~ 765-284-8422

Winchester resident Robert Farlow, well-known sculptor and oil painter, will exhibit his paintings at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in March. The artist will be on hand for a reception during the First Thursday event, from 5 to 8 PM on March 6th. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Initially a teacher, Farlow has been a professional artist for over fifty years. He continues to paint and exhibit regularly, and has won numerous awards throughout Indiana. He was one of the featured artists in the book, Painting Indiana II, produced by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and the Center for Agricultural Science & Heritage.

Plein air painters differ from studio painters in that that they paint on the site of the scene they're depicting. Plein air artists may do sketches and studies outside and return to their studios to complete the works, but it is this initial work out-of-doors that qualifies their standard.
