End of Summer Jam lost $47,500

The Star Press reports that End of Summer Jam lost $47,500 this year:

MUNCIE - Downtown development lost $47,500 on the End of Summer Jam concert.

"No one likes to lose money," said Dan Allen, president of the Muncie Downtown Development/Urban Enterprise Association Board. "We will recover from this."

Ken Hughes, interim downtown development director, gave the board the bad news today. Only 2,600 people attended the Sept. 9 concert, which was moved to the afternoon so it wouldn?t conflict with that evening?s Ball State-Indiana football game at BSU.

The game, the nearby Matthews Covered Bridge Festival and other concerts in Indianapolis were all reasons cited by Hughes for low attendance at the End of Summer Jam, which featured ?80s rock bands Cheap Trick and .38 Special. Cheryl Crowder, event coordinator, also blamed the afternoon concert time.

October at The Artist Within

The Artist Within, at 313 South Walnut St in Downtown Muncie, will feature oil paintings by Indiana artist Abbie Parmele. Abbie is resident of Rensselaer, Indiana and a graduate of the Fort Wayne Art Institute. Her paintings reflect artistic points of view of sky and clouds that might be attributed, in part, to her years as a flight attendant for American Airlines. In addtioin to oil painting, this month's artist works with contemporary collage, jewelry design, and hand-painted glass ornaments. She has exhibited throughout Indiana and her work can be found in the governor's mansions in Indiana and Iowa, as well as in homes in England, Denmark, Australia, and Zimbabwe, Africa. Her son Logan is a student at Ball State University majoring in Architecture.

The upstairs gallery will exhibit encaustic paintings by Marilyn Derwenskus' BSU Advanced Painting class. Opening reception Thursday Oct. 5th/5-9. Live demonstratons.

Local artist/teacher Ana-Marie Delk will have a three day show and sale of her knitted and felted purses and accessories. The work will be available during studio hours Thursday Oct 5 through Saturday October 7th.

Heidi J. Hale continues her jewelry workshop offerings throughout Oct. Call or stop by for more information and a schedule of classes. Ask about her "Designer Series" with gold and pearls.

Toren Scott's throwing lessons are still popular; plan ahead for best choice of times... call to schedule a lesson. Already know how to throw? Come rent the wheel...only $10/hr.!

"Clay-Day" hand built ceramics (pinch, coil, slab) workshops are offered on Saturdays. Please call if interested.

Story time for pre-schoolers and moms is back...story, snack, paint a piece of pottery!
Call for info and story scheduled.

"Create for the Cure" will take place from October 3-7. 100% of studio fees collected during the week will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Local artists and celebrities have participated in "Paint a Plate for the Cure" and the plates they painted will be in a silent auction during the week and the winning bids will be notified Sat. October 7th and the monies will also be donated to the Komen Foundation. Come join the fun and help a worthy cause.

ArtsWalk, Thursday Oct 5, 5-9 pm:

Toren Scott will take his potter's wheel outside to demonstrate throwing and have several of his recent works for sale.

Abbie Parmerle's oil painting exhibit will have its artist reception with refreshments and live music.

Marilyn Derwenskus' Encaustic class exhibit opening and technique demonstrations.

Ana-Marie Delk felted purses show and sale with demonstrations.

"Paint a Plate for the Cure" silent auction continues.

Officials blame timing for low 'Jam' turnout

MUNCIE -- End of Summer Jam had great weather and a great show with Cheap Trick and .38 Special, but it could have used a lot more fans in the audience.

Final numbers from Ticketmaster for the afternoon Sept. 9 concert showed only 2,600 concert-goers, far fewer that other downtown concerts have drawn.

Scheduling the concert in the afternoon, before that evening's Ball State University football game, "probably was not one of the best decisions," said Cheryl Crowder, downtown event coordinator. "It's tough to do a rock show in the afternoon."

By comparison, as many as 5,000 to 6,000 people have attended previous downtown concerts, with that number doubling for Muncie's annual Mardi Gras celebration.
