The Artist Within: August Exhibit by Glenda A. Jones

The Artist Within will display works by Glenda A. Jones during the month of August, with an opening reception at First Thursdays, August 2nd, from 5 to 8pm.

About the Artist: Glenda A. Jones is a native of the Commonwealth of Dominica in the Caribbean. She immigrated to the United States after marrying a native of Indiana. After traveling around the world for several years, they finally settled in Muncie, Indiana. Her training and experience lay outside of artistry. Like many of her artistic and creative siblings, her love is in creating beautiful works of art.

Since 2000 while traveling around the United States, she has painted multiple passionate works of art. Her artistic efforts spilled over to interior decorating. With limited funds, she creates elegant and comfortable motifs for homeowners. She designs oil paintings to match the color and decorum with handpicked custom frames. Currently, she prides herself in an evolving artistic motif in each room in her home. She has her hand in the interior decorating of homes in the Caribbean, France, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Indiana.

About the Work: Every artistic creation is from her heart thus the phrase “art from the heart”. The colors used in each painting are reflective of her mood and mindset. In days to weeks, she works on various designs with a motif of similar shapes and colors. The lines and shapes are created from surroundings or recent memories. The blending and texture are subtle alterations based on minute-to-minute feelings. Each art piece starts as dull and boring. Before the paint dries, the feeling and emotion is projected from the canvas with vibrant, exciting colors that entertain the senses. Each work of art allows the viewer to experience his or her own impressions and feelings.

Art Exhibits: Outside of individual homes, her artwork was first shown publicly in medical offices in Louisiana. Currently in Indiana, over 20 original acrylic paintings on canvas are featured in a medical office in Muncie, Central Indiana Ob/Gyn. More recently, she has decided to allow some of her artwork to be sold to the public on a piece-by-piece basis. To date, her artrwork has also been shown in Muncie at The Artist Within, The Blue Bottle, Rutter Media Open House, and Ball State University African Diaspora. Some of her artwork can be viewed at F.B. Fogg, Vera Mae’s Restaurant and she is an active member at the Art Work Gallery where some of her work is being display. Several galleries around Indiana have expressed interest in showing some of her artwork, so keep an eye open.

Civic Theatre Presents "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory"

MUNCIE CIVIC THEATRE will present the third production of its new Family Theatre Workshop Series with CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by Richard R. George, based on the book by Roald Dahl. The play will perform on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 3, 10 & 11 at 7:30pm as well as on Saturday & Sunday, August 4, 5 & 11 at 2:00pm. The performances will be on the main stage at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street, Muncie, Indiana. All tickets are $5 and may be purchased by calling 765-288-PLAY or in person at the Box Office. Box Office hours are Wednesday through Friday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and one hour prior to each performance.

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is an imaginative and fast-paced adaptation of the children's literary classic by Roald Dahl. The story follows Charlie Bucket in his adventurous tour of Willy Wonka's world-famous Chocolate Factory. Audiences will see Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, Grandpa Joe, Willy Wonka and Charlie himself come to life, and all involved will discover the true meaning of teamwork, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Under the direction of Muncie Civic Director of Education Marty Grubbs, the production is the part a series of offerings collectively called "The Family Theatre Workshop." The concept of the Workshop is based on the award-winning and nationally recognized Musical Theatre Mentorship Workshop developed by Muncie Civic Executive Director Darrin Murrell and his wife Julie Barber in 1998 while working in Portland, Oregon with American Heritage Theatre Project and Portland Parks & Recreation. The Workshop was started at Muncie Civic as the Young Actors Workshop upon their arrival in 2003 and has expanded this year into a full Acting Academy including both performance-based playlab classes and specifically targeted skill-based and introductory classes. The Family Theatre Workshop is the advanced level of the expanded program.

The Family Theatre Workshop production of CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is cast with a combination of young actors who have auditioned to get into the advance-level acting program as well as adult actors, some of whom serve as teachers for the advanced acting class. The students and teachers, as well as the other adult cast members, meet to rehearse as part of a summer camp experience for the students. Other aspects of the camp are designed to give the students the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the production process including scenery, costumes, props, and publicity. With the focus of the class entirely on a single production, the goal is for the public performances to be of a quality equal to regular Muncie Civic Main Stage subscription series offerings, but at a family-focused price and including the educational aspect of the camp classes.

The adult actors/teachers in the project include Civic veterans Ivy Tech Instructor Sean Christian Smith as Willy Wonka and Jan Etchison as Grandpa Joe. Also in the adult cast are Sasha Jones, Rusty Ramstrom and Melissa Donahue . They will be joined by a group of 24 student performers ranging in age from 7 to 16 years old. Many of the students are veterans of the Young Actors Workshop Program and Muncie Civic Main Stage shows.

For tickets and information call 765-288-PLAY.

Volunteers Needed for Downtown Events

he Muncie Downtown Business Council is signed up to volunteer for the Friday Night Movie, this Friday, July 20. The Special Events/Volunteer Committee needs 4-6 volunteers to help from 7:30pm-11:30ish. The movie playing will be "Pirates of the Caribbean." See below for a description of what is expected of the volunteers.

Additionally, Downtown Development is seeking vounteers to help out with Rib Fest, coming up on Saturday, August 4th, and Sunday, August 5th.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in giving a few hours of your time to help out, please contact Cheryl Crowder at 282-7897.

Free Friday Night Movies Volunteer Info

* 4-6 volunteers

* 7:30 set-up movies start about 9:30. Meet at our office, 407 S. Walnut St. Parking is available in either lot at the corners of Charles and Walnut Street.

* Set-up involves bringing out all concessions, pop coolers and tables. We will have helpers to bring out popcorn machine and hotdog machine.

* Sell concessions. Food handlers (popcorn and pizza, hotdogs) must wear gloves and cannot handle money. Please do not smoke behind the concession table. If you need to smoke please do it outside of the parking lot.

* The popcorn machine is sensitive and sometimes temperamental. Please do not add a new bag of popcorn to the popper until the last batch has finished popping. A Downtown volunteer will instruct you on how to use the machine...it's easy, just a little cranky.

* Clean-up at the end of the movie. Bring back to the office all concession supplies and tables. Someone will help you bring in the popcorn machine and hotdog machine. If there is popcorn left over, you may bag it and give it away or take some home. Empty the ice out of the coolers before bringing them back in the office. Pick up any remaining trash in the parking lot and put crowd fencing away. Return all trash cans to the back of our building.

* The money box starts with $100 in change. At the end of the evening, we will take out $100 and split the remaining amount with your organization. Only Jamaal, Cheryl or David and one person from your organization are authorized to deal with final payout.

* Thank you for your help. We couldn't do it without you!

Cornerstone Receives $100,000 Ball Bros. Grant

Cornerstone Center for the Arts was recently awarded a $100,000 Ball Brothers Foundation grant to assist with the cost of a new HVAC (heating, ventilation, and cooling) System. This grant will allow Cornerstone to provide a more adequate facility for its community-focused activities.

Serious problems have plagued the current system for the past year several years. Terry Whitt Bailey, President & CEO of Cornerstone Center for the Arts explained, "Cornerstone's HVAC has become unpredictable to non-working. This grant will allow us to begin upgrading the system by replacing the compressor, and installing a new 10 ton fan coil unit that will provide adequate and reliable heating and cooling to our building." Cornerstone's Executive Committee selected Conatser Heating & Cooling, Inc. as the contractor for this assignment, and they began work last week.

In 2006, Cornerstone Center for the Arts welcomed 85,000 visitors through its doors. Cornerstone has seen a 52% increase in guests to their facility and a 135% increase in individuals involved in arts programming over the past four years.

Through creative arts programming and family-friendly special events, Cornerstone makes a conscious effort to reach people of all races, ages, cultures, and socio-economic levels. "We are proud to be the center of activity in downtown Muncie," Bailey says, "and want to maintain our ability to create community connections through our education programs, rental facilities, and special events."

If you would like more information about this event, or to schedule an interview, please contact Terry Whitt Bailey at 765-281-9503 or email Terry at tbailey@cornerstonearts.org
